"High-end" gets used as a price tier, but it should describe construction: full inset doors set flush inside the face frame, solid hardwood face frames and dovetail drawer boxes, and finish work applied in multiple coats rather than a single production pass. Stock, semi-custom, and custom are about how much a line can be resized and configured, not, by themselves, a quality signal. In our catalog, the top of the range is St. Martin Heritage, a framed inset line in 49 finishes: sixteen hand-applied paint colors on paint-grade hardwood, the same sixteen on paint-grade oak, and seventeen stains that include Rift Cut White Oak. Diamond Edge is the other framed line people shortlist for inset work, with a plywood box as standard, a 3/4-inch solid face frame, and nine inset options. Both are made to order, so plan the schedule around weeks, not days.

White Oak Cabinets: Real Oak vs Oak-Look

White oak is the most requested wood we quote right now, and it is also where quotes get muddled. Some "oak" finishes are stains on real oak. Others are woodgrain surfaces made to look like oak. Neither is a scam, but they age differently, touch up differently and price differently, so a fair comparison needs them sorted first. Here is what we can ship, grouped honestly:

Where the table says "finish" rather than naming the material, that is because we have not confirmed the substrate with the manufacturer, and we would rather tell you that than guess. Ask your designer to confirm before you order if real wood matters to you.

Two practical notes. First, real oak costs more. On Fabuwood Galaxy, the two oak finishes run about 20% above the twelve standard colors; a B12 base cabinet is $438.75 in Natural Oak against $364.00 in Frost at our site prices. Second, rift-cut and plain-sawn oak look like different woods. Rift-cut gives you the straight, quiet grain most people picture when they save a white oak kitchen photo. Stain on oak also shifts from door to door, because every board takes stain a little differently. That is the charm of it, and it is also why we push everyone toward a physical sample before a full order. A light oak stain that looks cool and pale on a monitor can read warm and yellow under a south-facing Bluffdale window in the afternoon. Slim and Thin Shaker Doors We Carry

Luna in Natural Oak is the one to see if you want white oak and a slim frame on the same door. Like every Fabuwood stock series, Luna typically ships in about 2 weeks before freight.
• NOMA Line. St. Martin's H2 slim-frame profile on a frameless full-access box, stocked in five finishes: Chantilly Lace, Nordic Oak, Drift Walnut, Tricorn Black and Van Courtland Blue. NOMA is a stock program with only twelve door-and-finish combinations in total, so what you see is the whole menu.

A few things we tell buyers before they commit to a thin frame. Slim rails leave less flat surface for hardware, so edge pulls, finger pulls or a small knob placed on the stile work better than a long bar pull screwed through the panel. On short drawer fronts the frame and panel get cramped, and many lines switch those to a slab front; ask to see how the top drawer of a drawer base looks before you fall for the door alone. And slim shaker in a painted finish shows the frame joints more readily than a stain does, which brings us to paint.

Painted and Custom-Painted Cabinets

Most of our lines stock painted colors, so a white, gray, green or navy kitchen does not require anything custom. When the color has to be exact, there are two routes we can offer:

• Fabuwood custom paint. The framed Allure doors (Galaxy, Fusion, Luna, Nexus, Echo and Luxe) can be factory-finished in any color from the Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore catalogs. You give us the color name or code. It is sprayed and cured at the factory, the same process as the standard colors, so it is not an aftermarket repaint. It carries an upcharge that we quote per project, and custom paint typically takes 6–8 weeks. The frameless Illume and Ovela lines are not eligible. Details are on our Fabuwood custom colors page.
• St. Martin Heritage paint. Sixteen hand-applied paint colors, offered on smooth paint-grade hardwood or on paint-grade oak, where the open grain shows through the paint. This is the high-end painted option and it is framed inset.

One honest caveat about any painted five-piece door, ours or anyone's: wood moves with humidity, and paint does not stretch. Over the first year or two you may see a fine hairline where the rail meets the stile. It is not a defect, it is the joint doing what wood does. Dry climates make this more likely. The U.S. Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook recommends drying interior woodwork to about 8% moisture content for most of the country but about 6% for the dry Southwest, because wood that goes into drier air than it was made for shrinks. Along the Wasatch Front, with the furnace running all winter, indoor air gets dry. Keep the house at a steady humidity, let the boxes sit in the room for a few days before installation, and if hairlines would bother you, a stained finish or a slab door hides movement better.

Cabinet Layout Design Without a Site Visit

Layout design is the part people assume needs someone in the room. It doesn't, as long as the measurements are good. Where affordable kitchens actually overspend is not the door. It is corner cabinets (a lazy Susan costs two to three times a standard base of the same width), too many narrow boxes when two wide ones would do, and freight. The step that protects you is inspection. Check every box before you sign, write any damage or shortage on the delivery receipt, and photograph it. Unpack within 48 hours and report all damage, including concealed damage, with photos within 5 days of delivery and before installation (48 hours for Modernform orders).
