Open any cabinet catalog and the boxes get all the attention — but walk into a finished kitchen and what your eye actually lands on is the fitting pieces: the finished flank at the end of a run, the sliver of trim where the last cabinet meets a wavy wall, the flat strip that lets a standard box fit a non-standard room. Cabinet end panels, scribe molding, and filler strips are the three parts that turn a row of boxes into something that looks built for the house. What Is an End Panel Used For?

Here's the thing nobody tells you until the cabinets arrive: the factory doesn't finish the sides of the box. The doors and drawer fronts get the full multi-step finish system — the face frame too, on framed lines — but the box sides ship in a plain matching laminate or raw-looking veneer, because in a typical run each side is hidden against the neighboring cabinet. That's not a defect or a corner cut; finishing surfaces that will spend their lives pressed against another box would add cost to every cabinet in the kitchen for no visible benefit.

The problem is that every run ends somewhere. The last base cabinet before a doorway, the flank of a pantry, the back and sides of an island, the wall cabinet that terminates in open space — those sides face the room, and the plain box material reads as exactly what it is. An end panel is the answer: a decorative panel in the door material and finish, applied to the exposed side so the cabinet reads as furniture instead of a box. Panels run roughly ¼ to ¾ inch thick depending on the line and style — thin skin panels that laminate onto the box side, and thicker decorative versions that carry a shaker frame-and-panel profile matching the doors themselves.

So when shoppers ask what an end panel is used for, the honest one-line answer is: it's used anywhere a cabinet side is visible from the room. Refrigerator Panels, Dishwasher Panels, and Panel-Ready Appliances

Appliances are where panels stop being finish trim and start being architecture. A refrigerator is the largest single object in the kitchen, and the cabinetry around it decides whether it looks built-in or parked.

Refrigerator end panels — coded REP in most spec books — are deep panels, typically 24 to 30 inches, that run down the sides of the refrigerator opening. A standard base or wall panel is too shallow to wrap a fridge; the refrigerator version is sized to the appliance's full depth so the flanks of the enclosure are finished floor to soffit. Paired with a refrigerator wall cabinet above, the panels form a complete surround — the "return panels" your installer will mention — that frames the appliance the way a mantel frames a fireplace. Even with an ordinary freestanding fridge, a deep panel on each exposed side hides the appliance's flanks and closes the visual gap between cabinetry runs. The dishwasher gets the same treatment on a smaller scale. When a dishwasher sits at the end of a run — a common layout, since it wants to live beside the sink — its exposed side gets a base-depth panel so the run doesn't terminate in bare appliance sheet metal. And on the front, a dishwasher panel in the door style can face the appliance itself, provided the appliance is designed to accept one.

Which brings us to the phrase that confuses more appliance shoppers than any other: panel-ready appliances. "Panel ready" means the refrigerator or dishwasher is built to accept a custom cabinet-matched panel on its face — usually about ¼ inch thick, sized to the appliance manufacturer's published spec, and mounted with brackets on the appliance door. The appliance disappears into the cabinetry entirely; you get an unbroken wall of doors. Two practical warnings from the ordering side. First, panel ready is an appliance feature, not a cabinet feature — a standard stainless fridge cannot be paneled after the fact, so the decision happens at appliance purchase. Second, the panels are cut to the appliance maker's dimensions, not to a stock cabinet size, so your cabinet supplier needs the appliance's spec sheet in hand before the order goes in. The finish comes from the cabinet line; the dimensions come from the appliance. Get both right and the integrated look is the single biggest "custom kitchen" signal a semi-custom budget can buy.

Scribe Molding: The Fix for Walls That Aren't Straight

Now for the humblest piece in the catalog and the one that rescues the most installations. Scribe molding — sometimes spelled scribe moulding — is a thin, flexible strip of finished material, usually about a quarter-inch thick and an inch or less wide, whose entire job is to cover the gap where a cabinet meets a surface that isn't flat.

And no wall is flat. Drywall bows between studs, corners build up extra compound, plaster in older homes waves like water, and framing lumber was never perfectly straight to begin with. Cabinets, meanwhile, are rigid squares built to sixteenth-inch tolerances. Set a square box against a wavy wall and daylight shows through the gap — an eighth of an inch here, three-eighths there, tapering along the height of the cabinet. Caulk makes that gap white; it doesn't make it disappear.

Scribing does. The installer holds the strip against the wall, runs a compass or a scrap block along the wall's contour to transfer its exact waves onto the strip, then shaves the back edge to that line with a plane, rasp, or sander. The strip's visible edge now follows the wall perfectly, and its face covers the gap in the cabinet finish. Because the strip is thin, it flexes to follow gentle bows on its own; the scribing handles the rest. It's fitted after the cabinets are set — the last piece on, and the one that makes the install look inevitable.

Where it goes: along the vertical joint where the first and last cabinets in a run meet the wall, down the back edge of any tall pantry or oven cabinet standing against drywall, across the top of wall cabinets that die into a soffit, and around window and door casings that cabinets butt against. Base cabinets need it too — the joint between a base cabinet's back corner and the wall shows above the countertop line at every run end. One construction note: on frameless cabinets the stakes are higher. A framed cabinet's face frame overhangs the box slightly, giving the installer a little built-in shadow line at walls; a frameless box is a flush slab edge, so every wall gap shows at full width. Fillers vs. Scribe: Which Gap Gets Which Piece

These two get confused constantly, and the confusion causes real ordering mistakes, so here's the clean distinction: fillers close inches; scribe closes fractions of an inch.

A filler strip is a flat, finished board — typically ¾ inch thick and 3 to 6 inches wide — installed between a cabinet and a wall, an appliance, or another cabinet during installation. It exists because cabinets come in 3-inch width increments and rooms don't. A wall that's 122 inches long and a run of cabinets totaling 120 leaves 2 inches nobody can fill with a cabinet; the installer rips a 3-inch filler down to fit, scribes its wall edge tight, and screws it to the adjacent cabinet's frame. The filler is structural in a way trim isn't — it's part of the run, carrying the finish across the gap at full cabinet depth.

Scribe molding, by contrast, is applied over a joint after the boxes are set. It's cosmetic, thin, and flexible. If the gap between your last cabinet and the wall is half an inch or less, a scribe strip covers it; if the gap is an inch or more, you need a filler — and often both, a filler to span the distance and a scribe detail where the filler meets the wavy wall.

Fillers do a second job that has nothing to do with wavy walls: clearance. A cabinet door or drawer set dead in a corner can't open — the handle hits the cabinet on the perpendicular run, or the drawer collides with the neighboring doorknob. The fix is a corner filler, usually 3 inches on each leg, that pushes both cabinets away from the corner so doors swing and drawers extend freely. The same logic protects dishwashers beside walls and pull-outs beside casings. Quarter Round and Trim at the Floor Line

The floor line has its own small trim kit. But floors, like walls, are never flat, and where the toe kick skin or a furniture-style base meets an uneven floor, a quarter round closes the gap: a small convex trim, a quarter-circle in profile, nailed along the floor joint the way shoe molding finishes baseboard. Order it in the cabinet finish when it lands against cabinetry, or in the floor finish when it should read as part of the baseboard system — the convention is to match whichever surface the trim visually belongs to.

What to Order for a Typical Kitchen
