High Gloss Kitchen Cabinets: Acrylic, Lacquer, PET and What They Cost

Noor K.Noor K.

High gloss kitchen cabinets are flat slab doors with a mirror-like face, and that shine comes from one of four surfaces: a solid acrylic sheet, a lacquer topcoat, a PET plastic laminate or a thermofoil wrap. All four look alike in a photo. They differ in how the edge is finished, how they take a scratch and whether a chip can be fixed. What we stock is a UV-cured lacquer door from Fabuwood (Illume and Ovela, in Bianco and Grigio Gloss) and PET doors from US Cabinet Depot (Palermo Gloss White) and Modernform (European Glossy White). We don't carry acrylic. A 36-inch gloss base cabinet costs $610 to $757 on our site today, depending on the line.

We sell cabinets for a living, and gloss is the finish people most often order from a photo and then judge in daylight. Below: what each surface is made of, according to the manufacturers' own spec sheets, which gloss colors are really available, real SKU prices, and what it takes to live with a shiny kitchen.

Key Takeaways
  • "High gloss" is a sheen, not a material. The shine can be acrylic, lacquer, PET or thermofoil, and each one handles edges, scratches and repairs differently.
  • What we carry: Fabuwood Illume and Ovela Catalina in Bianco Gloss and Grigio Gloss (resin-infused paper on 18 mm MDF under a UV-dried high-gloss lacquer), USCD Palermo Gloss White (high-gloss PET laminate) and Modernform European Glossy White (PET on MDF with laser-applied edge banding).
  • We don't sell acrylic doors, and we have no black, red, navy or green gloss on the site. White and one gray are the gloss colors we stock.
  • Price: a B36 base is $609.84 in Palermo, $705.25 in Illume and $757.25 in Ovela. Illume charges the same for gloss as for its solid matte colors.
  • Care: a damp microfiber cloth and mild soap, dried right away. Never dry-wipe grit across the face, and keep abrasives, melamine sponges and baking soda off gloss.

What Makes a Cabinet Door High Gloss

Gloss is measured, not guessed. A meter shines light at the surface at a fixed angle and reads how much bounces straight back. Matte finishes sit near the bottom of that scale and high gloss near the top, where a door reflects a window almost like a mirror. REHAU, for example, rates its high-gloss acrylic at more than 85 gloss units measured at 60 degrees. Our matte cabinet finishes guide walks through the full sheen scale; this article covers only the top of it.

Two things follow from the physics. First, a gloss face needs a flat, perfectly smooth substrate, because any ripple in the board shows up as a wobble in the reflection. That is why gloss doors are almost always slab doors on an MDF or engineered-board core rather than solid wood, which moves with the seasons. Second, a mirror shows everything in front of it: fingerprints, grease haze and fine scratches sit on top of the reflection instead of disappearing into it.

Acrylic, Lacquer, PET and Thermofoil: Four Ways to Make a Door Shine

Here is how each surface is built, and what that means in your kitchen.

Cross-section diagram of four high-gloss cabinet door edges side by side: an acrylic sheet on MDF with an edge band, a resin paper under a lacquer topcoat on MDF, a PET film on MDF with an edge band, and a thermofoil film wrapped around the edge of an MDF core
Four ways to make a door shine. Acrylic, lacquer-over-paper and PET faces are edge-banded; thermofoil wraps around the edge as one film.

Acrylic. A thin sheet of PMMA (acrylic) is glued to an MDF core under pressure, and the edges are banded to match. REHAU's RAUVISIO brilliant is a good example of how a premium version is specified. It uses a 0.7 mm high-gloss acrylic laminate, PUR-laminated to both the face and the back of a super-refined MDF core. The edges are ABS LaserEdge, and a protective peel coat covers the face until the cabinets are installed (REHAU cabinet door program guide). REHAU says the color is in the acrylic layer itself rather than under a clear top layer, which it credits for "whites that stay white." A UK kitchen-buying guide notes two downsides: acrylic doors can't really be repaired once scratched or chipped, and buyers sometimes notice shading differences between doors after fitting (Kitchenfindr).

Lacquer. This covers two different things. A traditional lacquered door is MDF sprayed with several coats of paint and clear lacquer, sanded and polished between coats. It has no visible edge band, it comes in any color, and it can be repaired by a refinisher. The newer industrial version is what Fabuwood uses on Illume and Ovela: an 18 mm MDF board "pressed with a decorative paper infused with resins and protective elements," then a high-gloss lacquer topcoat "with UV drying applied to the front face" (Illume spec book, Finish Specifications). The color comes from the paper and the shine from the UV-cured coat. The spec book lists edge banding on the Illume doors and calls the gloss finish "highly scratch-resistant." Fabuwood doesn't describe a way to refinish it, so if one of these doors is badly damaged, we'd plan on replacing it rather than repairing it the way you would a sprayed door.

PET. PET is polyethylene terephthalate, a clear, tough plastic film. It is pressed onto MDF or engineered wood in a solid color, and the edges are banded. Modernform's FAQ says PET "is a considerably thicker surface than a laminate paper and it has some give to it," and that its PET doors use laser-applied edge banding that "leaves no visible glue line" (Modernform FAQ). US Cabinet Depot's spec manual describes Palermo as "a fully edge banded, high-gloss PET laminate over engineered wood, with a matte melamine back." So the gloss is on the front only; the inside face of the door is matte melamine.

Thermofoil. A vinyl (PVC) film is heated and vacuum-pressed over a routed MDF door, so it wraps the edges in one continuous skin with no seam. That lets a one-piece routed door carry a shaker profile, and it is a common budget route to a glossy white. (Gloss shaker doors can be made in acrylic too, but as five-piece doors built from laminated rails and stiles; REHAU offers its brilliant acrylic in both slab and shaker profiles.) Its weak spots are heat and age: the film can lift near an oven, and some manufacturers require heat shields. Our thermofoil cabinets guide covers peeling, heat and repairs in full. Thermofoil isn't in any gloss line we sell.

Surface What it is Edge Scratch or chip Where you find it
Acrylic (PMMA) Solid-color acrylic sheet, 0.7 mm in REHAU's spec, laminated to MDF Banded (ABS or laser edge) Fine swirls show; a chip usually means a new door European-style and custom programs; not in our catalog
UV lacquer over resin paper Printed resin-infused paper on 18 mm MDF under a UV-dried gloss lacquer Banded Fabuwood calls it "highly scratch-resistant"; we'd plan on replacing, not refinishing, a badly damaged door Fabuwood Illume and Ovela Catalina Gloss
Sprayed lacquer Coats of paint and clear lacquer, sanded and polished, on MDF Seamless, no band Can be spot-repaired by a refinisher High-end custom shops
PET laminate Solid-color polyester film on MDF or engineered wood Banded (laser-applied on Modernform) Tough film; a deep gouge means a new door USCD Palermo, Modernform European
Thermofoil (PVC) Vinyl film heat-and-vacuum-wrapped over routed MDF Wrapped, no seam Can peel or lift near heat Budget white shaker and slab lines; none of ours in gloss

For a cabinet buyer, the edge and the core matter more than the name on the face. A banded edge shows a fine seam up close but sits flat and square; a wrapped edge has no seam but can let go at the corners. Every gloss line we sell uses an MDF or engineered-wood core, the right choice for a slab. For a longer look at laminates, TFL and melamine faces, see our melamine cabinets guide.

High Gloss White Kitchen Cabinets: The Colors We Actually Stock

Most people searching for gloss want white gloss kitchen cabinets, and most of the market makes them. Here is every gloss finish on our site, with its surface and its box:

  • Fabuwood Illume Catalina Bianco Gloss and Grigio Gloss. The UV-lacquer door described above, on a frameless box with ¾-inch engineered furniture board sides and Blum hinges. Illume's current price book lists Blum MERIVOBOX full-extension metal drawers. Ships assembled. Shop Illume Bianco Gloss.
  • Fabuwood Ovela Catalina Bianco Gloss and Grigio Gloss. The same Catalina door on Fabuwood's newer frameless box, built from UV-veneered plywood with solid wood dovetail drawers. Ships assembled. See the Ovela overview.
  • US Cabinet Depot Palermo Gloss White. High-gloss PET on engineered wood, fully edge-banded, with a matte melamine back, on USCD's frameless altaeuro box (MDF and furniture-grade plywood, metal-sided drawer boxes). Available RTA or assembled. Shop Palermo Gloss White.
  • Modernform European Glossy White. PET on an MDF core with laser-applied edge banding, on 18 mm engineered-board frameless boxes. Available RTA or assembled. Shop European Glossy White.

Those three white gloss cabinet finishes aren't identical, and that's the main reason to order samples. The Catalina Bianco door is a printed paper under lacquer. Palermo and Modernform are solid-color PET films. Next to a white quartz top or a white-painted wall, one can read a touch cooler or warmer than another. Our guide to white cabinet shades explains how undertones shift under different light. With gloss the shift is stronger, because the door also reflects whatever color is across the room.

Grigio Gloss is our only gray gloss, available in both Illume and Ovela. It is a mid, neutral gray. That makes it the one to pick for a gray gloss kitchen, or for an island paired with white gloss perimeter cabinets. Because both colors use the same door and box, a two-tone Bianco and Grigio layout costs no more than an all-white one in the same line.

What we don't carry: acrylic kitchen cabinets of any kind, gloss in a framed or shaker door, and gloss in a woodgrain. If a quote from another dealer says "acrylic," ask for the manufacturer's name for the surface and the core. The table above tells you what to expect from each answer.

Black, Red and Other Bold Gloss Colors

Black and red gloss get searched, but none of the cabinets on our site come in black, red, navy or green gloss. Fabuwood's Illume spec book does list a Catalina Designer's Collection with gloss colors including Black, Azul Marino, Olivo and two metallics, priced at the standard gloss column plus 10%. Those finishes aren't on our site; if you want one, ask us about it.

If you want a dark slab kitchen from our catalog, the closest options are matte. Catalina Carbone Matte (Illume and Ovela) is a dark solid color with a lacquered surface that Fabuwood describes as anti-fingerprint. Black gloss is also the hardest sheen of all to keep clean. Formica puts it plainly: gloss can "highlight fingerprints, smudges, and minor scratches—especially on darker colors" (Formica, glossy vs matte cabinets). For dark kitchens in general, see our black kitchen cabinets guide.

Why Gloss Kitchens Are Almost Always Frameless

Every gloss line we carry, high gloss white cabinets included, is frameless, and that isn't a coincidence. A mirror-flat slab door looks its best as one uninterrupted plane with a hairline gap to the next door. That is exactly what a frameless box with full-overlay doors gives you. Put the same door on a face-frame box and the reflection breaks up at every frame edge. The frameless cabinets buying guide covers the construction; for gloss, three details matter.

  • Exposed ends need panels. USCD's spec manual says the altaeuro box is "grey linen thermofused melamine" outside, so "panels will be needed to finish the exposed ends." Illume box edges are banded in a White Linen textured laminate. Neither box side is gloss, so any end a guest can see gets a matching gloss panel on the quote.
  • Box squareness shows. With gaps of a few millimeters, a box that is out of square shows as a crooked reflection line. That's one reason we suggest paying for assembly on RTA frameless lines.
  • Handles change the look and the cleaning. Handleless doors keep the plane clean, but you open them by pressing or gripping the face. Our push-to-open cabinets guide covers the hardware; with gloss, a push latch puts a fingerprint in the same spot on every door.

What Gloss Cabinets Cost: Real SKU Prices

These are the prices on our site as of October 1, 2026. Fabuwood items show a sale price at 35% off list; Palermo shows a single price. Modernform European Glossy White is quoted per order rather than priced online, so it isn’t in the table.

Bar chart comparing the price of a 36-inch gloss base cabinet: USCD Palermo Gloss White $610, Fabuwood Illume Bianco Gloss $705 and Fabuwood Ovela Bianco Gloss $757
One B36 base cabinet in white gloss, three lines: Palermo $609.84, Illume $705.25, Ovela $757.25 (site prices, October 2026).
SKU What it is USCD Palermo Gloss White Fabuwood Illume Bianco Gloss Fabuwood Ovela Bianco Gloss
B12 12″ base $344.08 $461.50 $497.25
B36 36″ base $609.84 $705.25 $757.25
SB36 36″ sink base $395.12 $585.00 $627.25
W3030 30″ wide, 30″ high wall $343.64 $471.25 $507.00

Three patterns stand out:

  • Gloss costs no more than solid matte in Illume. Fabuwood's Illume price book puts Bianco Gloss, Grigio Gloss, Bianco Matte and Carbone Matte in the same price column. The woodgrain textures sit one column lower: a B12 lists at $710 in the solid colors and $640 in the textures, about 10% less.
  • Ovela runs about 7 to 8% above Illume for the same door. The difference pays for the plywood box and dovetail drawers.
  • Palermo is the lowest-priced of the three, especially on sink bases. Check the sizes when you compare: Palermo wall cabinets are 30¼″ tall, where Fabuwood's are 30″, and Palermo ships RTA or assembled while Fabuwood ships assembled.

For a whole kitchen, our Illume review estimates a standard 10×10 at $6,000 to $8,000 in cabinets. It's an estimate; your layout, panels and fillers move it. An itemized quote gives the real number.

Fingerprints, Scratches and Glare: Living With Gloss

The same things make gloss great and make it demanding. Formica sums up the upside: gloss reflects light, which makes it "a strong choice for dimly lit kitchens," and its "ultra-smooth surface makes cleaning fast and easy." The downsides are just as real:

  • Fingerprints. Skin oil breaks up the reflection, so every touch shows. Handles or edge pulls keep hands off the door face; push-to-open doors put a print in the same spot every time.
  • Swirl scratches. These rarely come from knives or pots. They come from dust or grit dragged across the face with a dry cloth. REHAU tells owners of its acrylic doors not to dry-wipe them and not to use paper towels, and the same logic applies to lacquer and PET.
  • Glare. In a south- or west-facing kitchen, a wall of white gloss can bounce afternoon sun back into your eyes. In a small, dim kitchen that same reflection is the reason to pick it.
  • Edges. Every gloss door we sell is edge-banded. Up close you can see a fine line where the band meets the face. That's normal; a band that lifts or chips is not, so inspect edges when the cabinets arrive.
  • Heat. Keep toasters, kettles and air fryers from venting steam straight onto doors. When you run a self-cleaning oven cycle, open or remove the doors next to the oven.

If your doors arrive under a protective film, leave it on until installation is finished. REHAU says to peel it promptly after installing the cabinets and before mounting hardware, and not to leave it in direct sunlight.

Cleaning High-Gloss Doors Without Dulling Them

Gloss cleans easily as long as you never scrub it. Our cabinet care guide has the full routine; for gloss it comes down to this:

  1. Rinse loose dust off first with a damp microfiber cloth, so you aren't dragging grit across the face.
  2. Wipe with warm water and a little mild, dye-free dish soap on a well-wrung microfiber cloth. Modernform's instructions are "warm water, a little mild dish soap, a soft cloth, and dry it straight away."
  3. Pat dry with a second clean microfiber cloth, using light pressure. Never leave a damp cloth draped over a door or edge.

Keep these off every gloss face: scouring pads, powdered cleansers, melamine sponges ("magic erasers"), baking-soda paste, ammonia, bleach, citrus or orange-oil cleaners, solvents, and wax or silicone polishes. Wax builds up and smears on a mirror finish. For the greasy film near a range, our grease removal guide gives a sequence by finish; on gloss, stick to the mild steps and repeat them rather than stepping up to an abrasive.

Painting or Replacing Doors for a Gloss Look

People who already have cabinets often ask about gloss paint or new gloss doors. Brush- or roller-applied high-gloss paint on existing doors shows every brush mark, grain line and dent. A factory gloss face gets its evenness from a press or a curing line. If you still want to paint, a spray finish over a well-prepared surface gets closer, but it won't match a factory face. We sell complete cabinets rather than loose replacement doors; if you only need doors, ask us, but for refacing an existing kitchen with sound, square boxes, a refacing company is usually the route to price. If you are replacing the kitchen anyway, the new boxes are what make the frameless gloss look possible.

Gloss or Matte? A Quick Checklist

If you're still torn, this table settles most kitchens; the matte guide linked above makes the other side of the case.

Your kitchen Leans gloss Leans matte
Natural light Small, dim or north-facing Bright, with strong direct sun
Household Adults who don't mind a weekly wipe-down Small kids, pets, lots of hands on doors
Hardware Handles or edge pulls Handleless or push-to-open
Color White or mid gray Dark colors and woodgrains
Budget (Illume) Same price: Bianco Gloss and Bianco Matte share a price column

A split is also common: gloss uppers to bounce light around the room, and matte or woodgrain bases where hands and feet do the most damage. Ask for both on one 3D design and compare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are high gloss cabinets out of style?

No. They are tied to modern, European-style kitchens rather than to a passing color trend, and a white or gray slab in a frameless layout stays current. High gloss kitchen cabinets look dated when they're paired with ornate trim or a traditional door, which gloss doesn't suit.

Do gloss cabinet doors scratch easily?

The surfaces are hard, but a mirror face shows fine scratches that a matte face would hide. Most swirl marks come from wiping grit across the door with a dry cloth. Fabuwood describes its Illume gloss as "highly scratch-resistant"; clean it with a damp microfiber cloth anyway.

Is acrylic better than lacquer for gloss cabinets?

Neither is better across the board. Acrylic is a solid-color sheet with very deep gloss, but a scratched or chipped door can't really be repaired. Sprayed lacquer has seamless edges and can be refinished. UV lacquer over resin paper, which Illume and Ovela use, is a factory face that Fabuwood rates as highly scratch-resistant; it is edge-banded like acrylic.

What is PET on a cabinet door?

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a tough plastic film pressed onto MDF or engineered wood and edge-banded. USCD Palermo Gloss White and Modernform European Glossy White are both PET doors.

Is high gloss more expensive than matte?

Not in Illume: Bianco Gloss, Grigio Gloss, Bianco Matte and Carbone Matte are in the same price column, and all four cost about 11% more than the woodgrain textures. Across brands, the line matters more than the sheen.

Can you get a gloss finish on a shaker door?

Not in the lines we carry. All of our gloss finishes are slab doors on frameless boxes. Elsewhere, gloss shaker doors are usually thermofoil, or five-piece acrylic doors such as REHAU's brilliant shaker profile.

Are high gloss cabinets good for a bathroom?

Yes, with good ventilation and quick drying of splashes. Palermo Gloss White includes vanity sink bases and vanity drawer bases, and Illume Bianco Gloss includes vanity sink bases such as the VSB30FD.

How do I see the gloss before ordering?

Order door samples. Illume and Ovela Bianco and Grigio Gloss, Palermo Gloss White and Modernform Glossy White are all on our door samples page at $25 each. Look at them in your own kitchen, morning and evening; our sample guide covers what to check.
