How to Tell High Quality Kitchen Cabinets From Cheap Ones: A Dealer's Inspection Guide

You can tell high quality kitchen cabinets from cheap ones in about ten minutes, without knowing the brand or the price. Check five things. Look at the box: sides at least 1/2″ thick, a real back, shelves around 3/4″. Pull a drawer and look for a solid-wood dovetailed box on full-extension slides. Open a door and find a six-way adjustable concealed hinge. Look at the edges and inside the sink base. Then read the paperwork: KCMA certification, a TSCA Title VI (CARB2) formaldehyde statement, and a written warranty whose fine print you have actually read. A cabinet that passes all five is well built at any price. One that fails two is cheap, whatever the showroom charges for it.

We sell cabinets for a living and install them as builders, so every number below comes from a document you can check: the construction pages of the spec books for the lines we carry, the warranties printed in those books, and KCMA's published test list. This page judges build quality at any budget. What separates luxury cabinetry (full inset, custom sizing, hand-applied finishes) is a different question, and our guide to what makes a cabinet high-end answers it.

Key Takeaways
  • Quality is measurable. Panel thickness, drawer joinery, slide extension, hinge adjustment and edge treatment can all be checked by hand or read off a spec sheet.
  • The drawer is the fastest tell. Every line in our scorecard below uses a dovetailed solid-wood box or a metal drawer system, and most run on full-extension soft-close slides. Stapled boxes and 3/4-extension slides are where cheap cabinets save money.
  • One brand can sell two quality levels. KCD's Premier Series has 1/2″ 7-ply plywood boxes and full-extension soft-close slides. Its Builder Series has engineered-wood sides and 3/4-extension slides that don't soft-close unless you upgrade.
  • Read the warranty, not its name. J&K's 5-year warranty covers hinges and glides for only 1 year. Fabuwood's limited lifetime warranty (Allure, Illume, Ovela, Value Premium and Quest) excludes Blum hinges. US Cabinet Depot's lifetime warranty names hinges and drawer glides.
  • RTA is a format, not a grade. A flat-pack cabinet with a plywood box and a dovetailed drawer can out-build an assembled particleboard one.

The 10-Minute Inspection Checklist

Take this table to a showroom, or hold a spec sheet up against it. The "good sign" column is what the mid-priced lines we carry actually publish, not a luxury wish list. The "red flag" column is what shows up on the cheapest cabinets people send us photos of.

Part What to check Good sign Red flag
Box sides Thickness and material at the front edge 1/2″ plywood or 3/4″ furniture board, edges banded or covered by the face frame Thin panels that flex when pushed, raw particleboard edges
Back Knock on it; look for hanging rails 1/4″–1/2″ panel fastened on all sides, or a thin back plus solid hanging rails A loose sheet held by a few staples
Shelves Thickness and supports About 3/4″, edge-banded, on metal clips Thin shelves that bow under dishes, plastic pegs
Drawer box Corner joint and bottom Dovetailed solid wood or a branded metal system; captured bottom Stapled corners, bottom stapled on from below
Slides Pull to the stop Full extension, soft-close, concealed 3/4 extension, bare epoxy side slides, no soft-close
Hinges Look for adjustment screws and a brand stamp Concealed, six-way adjustable, soft-close No adjustment, no maker's mark
Doors Weight, joints, center panel Solid-wood or HDF frame, flat and square, even reveals Light hollow feel, open joints, uneven gaps across a run
Finish Edges, door backs, cabinet interior Even color on edges and backs; sealed interior Thin color on edges, bare wood inside
Paperwork Spec sheet, labels, warranty KCMA seal, TSCA Title VI / CARB2 statement, written warranty "Premium construction" with no numbers

Check the Box: Sides, Back, Joints and Shelves

The box carries the countertop and holds the hinge screws, and it's the one part you can't upgrade later.

Labeled cutaway diagram of a framed base cabinet showing a 1/2-inch plywood side, 1/2-inch back, 3/4-inch shelf, 3/4 by 1 1/2-inch face frame, panel beam, 5/8-inch dovetail drawer, full-extension slide and six-way hinge
The numbers a well-built framed base cabinet publishes, taken from Fabuwood's Allure spec book: 1/2″ plywood sides and back, 3/4″ shelves, a 3/4″ × 1-1/2″ face frame and a 5/8″ dovetailed drawer on full-extension runners.

Material and thickness. In framed cabinets, 1/2″ plywood sides are the standard you'll see on good mid-priced lines. Fabuwood Allure, KCD Premier (1/2″, 7-ply), US Cabinet Depot's framed collection and Mantra (1/2″ plywood ends) all publish it, and J&K lists 1/2″–5/8″. The frameless lines we sell use thicker panels, since the side does the face frame's job too: Fabuwood Illume uses 3/4″ engineered furniture board, and NOMA uses 3/4″ plywood. Furniture board isn't automatically a fail. A dense, fully edge-banded 3/4″ board is a fair trade-off, as our furniture board vs plywood comparison explains. The full material debate lives in our plywood vs MDF vs particle board guide.

Joints. Ask how the sides attach to the face frame and to each other. Allure's sides are dovetailed into grooves on the back of the face frame. The face frame itself is 3/4″ × 1-1/2″ solid wood, joined with glue and dowels, and a 2-1/2″ × 1/2″ plywood panel beam is fastened into a dovetail groove across the top. US Cabinet Depot lists "glue & staple or metal clip assembly" for its framed boxes, and J&K adds metal corner brackets in its base cabinets. Staples aren't a failure by themselves; they hold the back on nearly every cabinet, including Allure, where the back is "stapled and screwed". Staples as the only thing holding the corners together are.

Back and hanging. A wall cabinet hangs from its back or from rails, so the back matters more up there than in a base. Allure uses a 1/2″ veneered plywood back. Illume uses a thin 1/4″ back with 5/8″-thick hanging rails, a common and sound frameless design. NOMA's back is 1/4″ plywood. If the back is thin, look for the rails.

Shelves. Push down in the middle of a 30″ or 36″ shelf. Allure's shelves are 18mm (3/4″) veneered plywood with matching edge banding on metal clips. Mantra, Tribeca, KCD Premier and NOMA all list 3/4″ plywood shelves, and J&K's are 3/4″ cabinet-grade plywood with a clear coat on all sides and edges.

Pull a Drawer: Box, Bottom and Slides

Pull the top drawer all the way out and look at three things.

The corner joint. Interlocking dovetails in solid wood are the norm on everything we sell with a wood drawer. Allure, KCD (both series), US Cabinet Depot framed and J&K all specify a 5/8″ solid-wood dovetailed box, and NOMA uses 3/4″ solid birch. The alternative on good cabinets is a branded metal system. Illume uses Blum's MERIVOBOX, rated for 75 lb dynamic load, and US Cabinet Depot's frameless Palermo and Torino use metal-sided "altamax" boxes. What you don't want is a particleboard box stapled at the corners. We cover how to tell real dovetails from decorative grooves in our dovetail drawer guide, so we won't repeat its 60-second inspection here.

The bottom. Look underneath. A good bottom sits in a groove on all four sides ("fully captured", in US Cabinet Depot's words) and is 3/8″ plywood on Allure, KCD, US Cabinet Depot and NOMA. A bottom stapled onto the underside is the one that drops out when someone loads it with cans.

The slides. This is where cheap cabinets hide their savings. A full-extension slide brings the whole drawer out of the cabinet. A 3/4-extension slide leaves the back quarter of the drawer inside it, where you have to reach in to find things. Allure runs on Blum TANDEM plus BLUMOTION concealed runners. Mantra, US Cabinet Depot and Tribeca all list full-extension, soft-close undermount glides, and NOMA uses Blum's. KCD's Builder Series ships "undermount, 3/4 extension, non-soft-close" slides, with an option to upgrade. J&K lists "3/4 to Full extension", so ask which one your cabinet gets. The mounting question (under vs side) is in our undermount vs side-mount drawer slides guide.

Open a Door: Hinges, Door Build and Reveals

The hinge. Open the door and look at the cup hinge. A good one is concealed, soft-close and six-way adjustable (side to side, up and down, in and out), so an installer can square a door without taking it off. Fabuwood (Allure and Illume), KCD (both series), J&K, Mantra, Modernform and US Cabinet Depot's framed line all state six-way adjustable soft-close hinges; the rest state soft-close without the adjustment count, so ask. Allure and Illume name theirs: Blum Compact or clip-on hinges with BLUMOTION, opening to 110°. US Cabinet Depot's frameless line uses Hettich Sensys, and NOMA uses Blum. A named hinge means you can buy the same part in ten years. Our Blum hinge guide goes deeper.

The door itself. Five-piece doors are a frame of stiles and rails around a center panel. Allure's frames are solid wood joined with mortise and tenon, around an MDF center panel. J&K lists a 3/4″ solid wood door. KCD's Builder Series uses HDF stiles and rails with an MDF panel, and US Cabinet Depot's painted framed doors are all HDF. HDF on a painted door isn't a corner cut. It moves less than wood, so paint cracks less at the joints, which is why we explain it in our HDF cabinet door guide. Judge a door by weight, flatness and square corners.

Warranty fine print explains what to expect. Fabuwood, J&K and US Cabinet Depot all say painted doors may show cracks in the paint at the joints. None of them treats it as a defect: it's wood moving with the seasons. Fabuwood and J&K also both treat 1/4″ as the warp threshold: Fabuwood says a door warped up to 1/4″ isn't defective, and J&K warrants warpage greater than 1/4″, checked with the door off and laid on a flat surface.

The reveals. Look along a run of doors: gaps should be even and tops aligned. Uneven reveals are usually an adjustment problem, not a build problem, and six-way hinges exist to fix exactly that.

Check the Sink Base, the Edges and the Finish

If you only open one cabinet, open the sink base. Drips, cleaners and plumbing cut-outs show up a cheap box there first. Look at the floor: what it's made of, whether the edges are sealed, and whether the maker offers a liner. Fabuwood sells a gray waterproof polystyrene under-sink mat for Allure and Illume, cut to size when ordered with the cabinet. We'd put one in any sink base on any line.

Interior finish. A sealed interior wipes clean and resists moisture. Look for a finish you can feel, not raw wood. The spec books name it: Allure has a "natural finished interior", US Cabinet Depot framed boxes are UV-coated natural, KCD Premier uses natural birch veneer and the Builder Series natural melamine, and NOMA is maple melamine. Illume boxes are finished in White Linen textured laminate, and US Cabinet Depot's frameless line in gray linen melamine inside and out.

Edges. Run a finger along shelf fronts, door edges and the face frame. Exposed board edges should be edge-banded (Allure's shelves use matching wood veneer banding, and Illume's box fronts use laminate banding). Paint and stain should reach the door edges and backs at the same depth as the fronts.

Finished ends. Ask how the exposed side of an end cabinet is finished. On Allure you select the exposed side (right, left or both) when you order, and a 1/4″ MDF panel is applied and finished. US Cabinet Depot says all of its framed cabinets come with finished exteriors. Forget to specify it and you get a raw plywood side at the end of the island. Our end panels guide explains the options. For the finish itself, a door sample is the honest test. Our guide to evaluating cabinet samples shows how to scratch-test and light-test one at home.

Paperwork That Proves It: KCMA, CARB2 and the Warranty

KCMA certification. The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association runs the ANSI/KCMA A161.1 certification program. According to KCMA's own description of the tests, shelves and bottoms are loaded at 15 lb per square foot for seven days. A mounted wall cabinet is loaded to 600 lb. Doors are swung through 25,000 cycles, and drawers run 25,000 cycles loaded at 15 lb per square foot. The finish has to survive a 120°F, 70% humidity heat test, a hot-cold cycle down to −5°F, and 24-hour spills of vinegar, lemon juice, coffee, olive oil and more. Among our lines, KCD's spec book lists KCMA for both series and Modernform states KCMA and CARB2. For any other brand, look the manufacturer up in KCMA's certified company directory instead of trusting a badge on a website. If a line isn't certified, it hasn't failed anything; it simply hasn't been tested that way.

Formaldehyde. Every regulated panel in a cabinet sold in the U.S. has to meet the TSCA Title VI limits, the federal version of California's CARB Phase 2. So "CARB2 compliant" is the legal floor, not a bonus. The useful part is that a maker states it in writing. US Cabinet Depot, J&K and KCD all do. Our CARB2 guide explains the labels and the lower-emission tiers above that floor.

The warranty, read line by line. Warranty length gets the headline, but scope is what matters. Here is what five of our lines actually publish, from their spec books or warranty pages:

Line Term Hinges and slides Who it covers
Fabuwood Limited lifetime "only on Allure, Illume, Ovela, Value Premium, and Quest series cabinets", for as long as the first residential purchaser owns the home Blum hinges and other third-party parts excluded First residential purchaser; not transferable
J&K 5 years, or while the original buyer owns the home if shorter Hinges and drawer glide system covered for 1 year Original buyer from an authorized seller; not transferable
US Cabinet Depot Limited lifetime "Cabinetry, door hinges, and drawer glides" named Original purchaser with proof of purchase; not transferable
KCD 5 years from the date of shipment Not singled out; improper assembly excluded Original owner, residential; not transferable
Modernform Limited lifetime: year 1 outright, then lifetime only while the product stays in the current lineup "Cabinetry, door hinges and drawer glides" named Single-family, owner-occupied homes only; no rentals; not transferable

All of them exclude improper installation or assembly and damage from moisture or misuse, and J&K also names citrus cleaners. Fabuwood excludes kitchens without year-round climate control, and neither Fabuwood, US Cabinet Depot nor KCD pays the labor to remove and reinstall a replaced cabinet. None of them transfers to the next owner of the house. Diamond and Decorá publish limited lifetime warranties for the first residential purchaser, and Mantra and Tribeca 5-year limited ones; all four exclude rental properties. For St. Martin and NOMA, get the terms on your quote. A warranty you can't read before you buy is a red flag.

Cheap vs Affordable Quality: Where Low Prices Cut Corners

Low price isn't low quality; what matters is where the savings come from. KCD shows it inside one brand. Both of its series use 5/8″ dovetailed solid-wood drawers, six-way soft-close hinges, solid wood face frames and KCMA certification. The Builder Series saves money on engineered-wood sides, HDF door frames, 3/4″ engineered-wood shelves, melamine interiors and 3/4-extension slides that don't soft-close. Those are honest trade-offs for a rental. In a family kitchen, the slide upgrade is the one we'd pay for.

Two-column infographic comparing a cheap cabinet with a quality cabinet: stapled drawer vs dovetail drawer, 3/4 extension vs full extension slide, bare edges vs edge banded, no warranty vs written warranty
Four corners that cheap cabinets cut: stapled drawers, 3/4-extension slides, bare board edges and no written warranty.
Corner cut How to spot it Worth paying to avoid?
Stapled drawer box Staples or nails at the corners, no interlocking joint Yes. Drawers take the most abuse
3/4-extension or non-soft-close slides Drawer stops with its back quarter inside the cabinet Yes, in the drawers you use daily
Bare board edges Rough, porous edges on shelves and box fronts Yes, near the sink and dishwasher
Unbranded, non-adjustable hinges No adjustment screws, no maker's mark Yes. Replacement parts matter
Melamine instead of veneer interior Smooth, uniform interior Rarely. Melamine cleans well
HDF instead of solid-wood painted doors Heavier, perfectly flat door No. It's often the better painted door
No written warranty Nothing on paper before you pay Yes. Walk away

You can also make cheap cabinets look expensive without changing the box. Run them to the ceiling or add crown, finish every exposed end, scribe to uneven walls, and use one hardware family throughout. Our guide to stretching a cabinet budget covers each move.

Are RTA Cabinets Good Quality?

They can be. Ready-to-assemble describes how a cabinet ships, not how it's built. J&K ships only RTA, with 1/2″–5/8″ plywood boxes, 5/8″ dovetailed drawers and metal corner brackets. That's a better box than many assembled particleboard cabinets. What decides RTA quality is the box material and the joinery that replaces factory glue: metal clips and brackets, cam locks or glued dowels. Assembly matters too. A box put together out of square will never hang a straight door. Compare formats in our RTA vs pre-assembled guide, and see how the brands rank in our RTA brand rankings.

Are Fabuwood Cabinets Good Quality?

We get this question more than any other, so here's the spec answer. Allure, the framed line, meets every "good sign" in the checklist above: 1/2″ veneered plywood box, 3/4″ plywood shelves on metal clips, mortise-and-tenon door frames, a 5/8″ dovetailed drawer on Blum TANDEM runners, Blum six-way hinges and a limited lifetime warranty. Illume, the frameless line, is a different build: 3/4″ furniture board with Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawers. Keep its sink base dry and lined. Our Fabuwood review and our guide to the Fabuwood lines to avoid cover the rest.

Which Lines Make High Quality Kitchen Cabinets? Our Spec Scorecard

This isn't a ranking of quality cabinet brands. It's the checklist filled in from each line's published specs. "Confirm" means the maker doesn't publish that detail and your quote should state it.

Line Box Drawer Slides Warranty Format
Fabuwood Allure 1/2″ plywood 5/8″ dovetail Blum, full ext. Limited lifetime Assembled
Fabuwood Illume 3/4″ furniture board Blum MERIVOBOX Full ext. Limited lifetime Assembled
KCD Premier 1/2″ 7-ply plywood 5/8″ dovetail Full ext., soft-close 5-year limited RTA or assembled
KCD Builder 1/2″ engineered wood, plywood back 5/8″ dovetail 3/4 ext., upgradeable 5-year limited RTA or assembled
J&K 1/2″–5/8″ plywood 5/8″ dovetail 3/4 to full ext. 5-year limited RTA only
US Cabinet Depot framed 1/2″ plywood 5/8″ dovetail Full ext., soft-close Limited lifetime RTA or assembled
Mantra 1/2″ plywood ends Solid wood dovetail Full ext., soft-close 5-year limited Confirm on your quote
Tribeca Confirm Dovetail Full ext., soft-close 5-year limited RTA or assembled
Diamond Vibe / Distinction Furniture board (plywood upgrade) Dovetail Soft-close Limited lifetime Assembled
Diamond Edge Plywood Dovetail Confirm Limited lifetime Assembled
Decorá Plywood Dovetail Soft-close Limited lifetime Assembled
NOMA 3/4″ plywood 3/4″ birch dovetail Blum, full ext. Confirm Assembled

The pattern: nearly every line has a dovetailed or metal drawer and soft-close hardware. The real differences are box material, slide extension on entry series, and warranty scope. How to weigh them for your project is in our guide to choosing a cabinet brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the highest quality kitchen cabinets?

At the top of the market are custom and full-inset lines. For build quality, any cabinet with a plywood or thick edge-banded box, dovetailed or branded metal drawers, full-extension slides, six-way hinges and a readable warranty is well made.

How can you tell if cabinets are cheap?

Pull a drawer. Stapled corners, a bottom stapled on from below, or a drawer that stops three-quarters of the way out are the quickest tells. Then look for raw board edges and hinges without adjustment screws.

What thickness should cabinet sides be?

For framed plywood boxes, 1/2″ is the standard on the good mid-priced lines we sell. The frameless lines that publish a thickness (Fabuwood Illume, NOMA and US Cabinet Depot's altaeuro) use 3/4″ (18mm) panels, because the sides carry the hinges without a face frame.

Are plywood cabinets always good quality?

No. Plywood holds screws and handles moisture better than particleboard, but a thin plywood box with stapled drawers is worse than a 3/4″ edge-banded furniture-board box with Blum hardware. Judge the whole cabinet.

What warranty should good cabinets have?

A written one you can read before you pay. Five years to limited lifetime is typical on our lines. Check whether hinges and slides are covered and for how long, and note that none of these warranties transfers to a new owner.

How do I check quality when buying cabinets online?

Read the construction page of the spec book (ours are on our spec book page), order a door sample, and ask for a quote that names box material, drawer joint, slide extension and hinge for each line.
