Stock Cabinets — Fixed Sizes, Fast Delivery
A stock cabinet exists before you do — as far as the factory is concerned. Manufacturers run standard sizes in volume, warehouse them, and ship whatever the order pulls. That production model dictates everything about the tier:
- Widths move in 3" steps. Base and wall cabinets run from 9" to 48" wide in 3-inch increments — 12", 15", 18", 21", and so on. There is no 17" cabinet in a stock catalog.
- Heights and depths are fixed. Base cabinets are 34.5" tall and 24" deep; wall cabinets come in a handful of standard heights (30", 36", 42") at 12" deep. Take them or leave them.
- The style menu is short. A stock line might offer a white shaker, a gray shaker, and two or three stained doors. Pick from the menu; there is no paint-match program.
- Gaps get fillered. Since your wall is never an exact multiple of 3 inches, installers close the remainder with filler strips — flat pieces of finished stock, usually 1"–3" per run, tucked against walls and corners where they mostly disappear.

- Width modifications. The catalog still lists 3" increments, but you can order a cabinet reduced to an exact width — typically in 1" or even 1/4" steps. Your 17.5" gap gets a 17.5" cabinet, not a 15" cabinet plus filler.

- An open finish deck. Dozens of door profiles crossed with large paint and stain decks; many programs will match a custom color for a fee.
- Interior options from the factory. Roll-out trays, deep-drawer conversions, trash pull-outs, spice pull-outs — built in, not retrofitted.
The limits are just as defining. You are modifying a standard platform, not designing from zero: the factory won't change its box construction, invent a door profile it doesn't cut, or build a cabinet outside its dimensional envelope. And every modification carries a charge — which produces the tier's classic failure mode. A semi-custom order loaded with modifications can quietly price itself past a local custom shop. We've seen quotes where mod charges were a third of the total; at that point you're paying custom money for factory constraints. A good dealer watches for that line and tells you when you've crossed it.

Custom — Fully Bespoke, Built From a Drawing
Custom cabinetry starts with a blank sheet. A local shop or custom manufacturer field-measures your room, draws every cabinet to the actual space, and builds exactly that — any width to the eighth of an inch, any depth, any wood species, any door profile the shop can cut, any finish it can spray. There is no catalog because there is nothing to catalog.
What that buys you, concretely:
- Rooms that aren't rectangles. Bay windows, angled walls, out-of-square 1920s plaster, sloped ceilings under stairs — custom builds to the space instead of approximating it with fillers.
- Continuous runs with no seams or fillers. Full-height pantry walls, furniture-style islands, integrated paneling that wraps appliances and continues into a butler's pantry.

Step 1 — Does your room disqualify anything?

Step 2 — Let the budget bands pick among survivors. At ~20 linear feet: under $5,000 points to stock/RTA or the in-between tier above; $5,000–$9,000 buys the semi-custom sweet spot with room for real construction quality; past $9,000 you're choosing between heavily-optioned semi-custom and true custom — and at that point the room, not the wallet, should decide.
Step 3 — Sanity-check the semi-custom vs custom cabinets boundary. Count the modifications your design needs. One to four mods: semi-custom wins on price and factory consistency. A design where every other cabinet is modified: get a custom bid before you sign, because the mod charges may have already carried you there — with fewer constraints waiting on the custom side.

Buy custom if the room physically can't be served by a catalog, you're matching existing work, or the design is the point and the budget knows it.
