The 36-inch pantry: the biggest box, and the strangest pricing

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Thirty-six inches is the end of the tall range — the widest pantry the line builds, three feet of doors from floor to ceiling. It is also the width where the price ladder stops being predictable, and anybody spending this much on one cabinet should see the numbers before choosing a height.

The height ladder, with the anomaly left in

Eight units, TP361284 through TP362493, in 12" and 24" depths. The 84" boxes start at $1,677.00. From there the price does not climb evenly, and at one step it does not climb at all — the 93" units are dearer than the 96" ones in this dataset.

84"$1,677.00$1,712.75
90"$2,002.00$2,031.25+$325.00
93"$2,470.00$2,548.00+$468.00
96"$2,314.00$2,343.25-$156.00

What three feet of pantry actually gives you

Two 18" doors, a shelf run wide enough to store by category rather than by what fits, and enough bay width that roll-out trays stop being a luxury and start being the only sensible way to reach the back. At 24" deep and 96" tall the interior works out to roughly 40 cubic feet of enclosed storage standing on six square feet of floor.

It is also a large flat plane of doors. In a small kitchen, a 36" tall unit reads as furniture and can shrink the room; the 12"-deep version, which projects no further than the wall cabinets, is the version that disappears. That trade — capacity against visual weight — matters more at this width than at any other.

Two 18s, or one 36

Two 18" pantries side by side cost $2,041.00 at 84" and 12" deep. One 36" costs $1,677.00 and gives a continuous shelf instead of two half-width ones. Where the wall is uninterrupted, the single wide box wins on both money and usability.

The case for the pair is separation: two doors that belong to two households, two functions or two different lock-ups. That is a real requirement in a rental or a shared kitchen, and it is the only situation in which paying more for less shelf makes sense.

Before the truck arrives

Underestimating the delivery. A 36" wide, 24" deep, 96" tall pre-assembled cabinet is a two-person lift with a diagonal that does not turn in a tight stair. Measure the route — doorway width, stair landing, ceiling height at the turn — before this one is on a truck.

The other is the wall behind it. A pantry of this size loaded with tinned food is heavy, and it must be anchored into framing, not drywall anchors. If the studs do not fall where the top rail needs them, add blocking while the wall is open.

Common questions

What is the largest pantry cabinet size available?
Thirty-six inches wide, 24" deep and 96" tall is the largest tall unit in this line. Beyond that you are combining cabinets side by side rather than buying a bigger box.
How much does a 36 inch pantry cabinet cost?
From $1,677.00 for the 84"-tall, 12"-deep unit to $2,548.00 at the top of the range. Height drives that spread far harder than depth does — depth adds roughly $30.00 to $78.00.
Is one 36 inch pantry better than two 18 inch pantries?
Almost always. The single box costs less at the same height and depth and gives a continuous shelf rather than two narrow ones divided by two sets of stiles. Choose the pair only when you need the storage genuinely separated.
How much can a 36 inch pantry hold?
At 24" deep and 96" tall the usable interior is roughly 40 cubic feet — the working equivalent of a small walk-in, provided you fit roll-outs low down so the back of the bottom shelves stays reachable.
Do tall cabinets need to be anchored to studs?
Yes. A loaded pantry at this size is one of the heaviest items in the kitchen and it is top-heavy while doors are open. Fix through the top rail into framing, and add blocking if the studs do not line up.
