Thirty-three inches: corners, apron sinks and the drawer-front question

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Something changes at thirty-three. Below it, every box is a rectangle you fill with things. Here the catalog starts answering shape problems instead — the first easy-reach and lazy-Susan corner units are made at this width, the first apron sink cabinet that most kitchens can actually use, and a pair of variants marked SDF that exist purely because of how a drawer line reads across a room. Ten SKUs, $455.00 to $1,030.25.

What SDF means, and why it is only on the wide boxes

A base cabinet wide enough to need two doors is normally built with two drawer fronts above them, split at the middle stile so the fronts line up with the doors below. SDF — single drawer front — runs one continuous front across the whole width instead. Both versions are made at 33 inches, and they cost exactly the same: $468.00 for the sink bases, $633.75 for the standard bases.

So this is a design decision with no price attached, which means people skip it, and then live with it. It is worth two minutes.

Worth confirmingNothing — this is the defaultThat the front is a false front on a sink base, not a working drawer

Our rule of thumb: on a sink base, take the SDF. The seam under a faucet is the one joint in a kitchen everybody stands and looks at while they rinse a plate. On a standard base in the middle of a run of similar boxes, take the split fronts, because they keep the vertical lines marching along the wall.

The smallest corner units in the catalog

ERB33 is an easy reach corner at $838.50; LSB33 is a lazy Susan at $1,030.25. Both put a door across the diagonal of a corner. The difference is what is behind it: the easy reach has fixed shelves you reach into, the lazy Susan has rotating trays that bring the corner out to you. The $191.75 between them buys the rotation.

What both consume is the thing people misread on a plan. A 33-inch corner unit takes 33 inches of one wall and 33 inches of the other. The number is not a width in the ordinary sense; it is a footprint on both legs of the corner, and every other cabinet on both walls has to be laid out from it.

FS33 and the apron measurement that catches people

The farm sink cabinet at this width is $815.75. The front is cut away so the sink's apron becomes part of the cabinet face, and the box is built to carry a sink that may weigh a great deal once it is full.

Here is the catch. Apron sinks are sold by bowl size, and cabinets are sold by nominal width, and the two numbers do not line up: a sink sold as 33 inches frequently needs a 36-inch cabinet, because the apron has to bear on the box either side. The sink manufacturer publishes a required cabinet width. That figure decides which cabinet you buy — nothing else does.

The ordinary boxes, which are still most of the width

B33FD-12D at $455.00 and B33FD at $468.00 are the full-height door boxes, shallow and standard. SB33 and SB33SDF at $468.00 are the sink bases most kitchens actually use — a 33-inch box is the smallest one a standard double bowl belongs in. B33 and B33SDF at $633.75 are the standard bases, and DB33 at $955.50 is a three-drawer bank wide enough to take a sheet pan flat.

DB33 is worth a second look on price: $28.95 an inch, against $41.82 an inch for the same three-drawer arrangement at fifteen inches. Wide drawers are where the value is.

The mistake at this width

Ordering the corner unit last. The corner is the constraint on both walls, and by the time everything else has been sized to close two runs neatly, the 33 inches the corner needs is rarely still there. Kitchens get planned outward from the sink and the range because those are the interesting decisions; they should be planned outward from the corner, because that is the one with no give in it. If the corner is fighting you, it is worth having the run drawn properly before anything is ordered.

Common questions

What does SDF mean on a cabinet SKU?
Single drawer front — one continuous drawer front across the width of the box instead of two split at the middle stile. It costs the same as the standard version and is purely a matter of how the run reads.
What size cabinet do I need for a 33-inch farmhouse sink?
Often a 36-inch one, not a 33. Apron sinks need bearing on the box either side, so the manufacturer's stated cabinet width is usually larger than the sink's nominal size. Read that figure off the sink spec before ordering.
Easy reach or lazy Susan — which corner cabinet is better?
A lazy Susan brings the corner to you on rotating trays and costs $191.75 more here. An easy reach has fixed shelves and more usable shape for tall items. If the corner holds everyday things, take the rotation; if it holds bulk storage, save the money.
What is the smallest lazy Susan base cabinet?
Thirty-three inches, at $1,030.25. It occupies 33 inches on both walls of the corner, so it needs planning before the rest of either run.
Is a 33-inch sink base big enough for a double bowl sink?
Yes — this is the narrowest box we would put a standard 33-inch double bowl in, and the fit is tight enough that the sink's minimum cabinet width should still be checked. If it asks for more, the 36 is the next stop.
