Where the bowl sits on a 36-inch vanity

A thirty-six inch vanity is wide enough that the basin no longer has to sit in the middle of it, and that single fact is what separates the two cabinets offered at this width. One gives you a blank box and a free hand with the top. The other decides the layout for you and hands back a stack of drawers in exchange.
The two builds
The full-height door base at $490.75 is the third cabinet here, but it takes no plumbing, so for anyone building a vanity the choice is between these two.

The mirror problem
An offset bowl is only a problem if the wall above it is planned as though the bowl were centred. Hang a mirror in the middle of a combo vanity and the reflection sits over the drawers while you stand over the basin looking at the edge of the frame.
Two fixes work. Centre the mirror on the bowl and let it sit off-centre on the cabinet, which reads as deliberate when the light is centred on the mirror too. Or run a single wide mirror the full width of the vanity, which removes the question entirely and makes a small bathroom look wider. What does not work is a centred mirror with sconces at the ends and a bowl a foot to the left of all of it.
Planning the run and the top
This is the widest bath cabinet before the range stops stepping in threes: above 36" the next sizes are 42", 48" and 60", so an odd wall between 37" and 41" means a 36" cabinet plus filler, or a 36" cabinet plus a narrow companion box. For the top, measure the boxes as they will stand and add the overhang at any exposed end. If the vanity runs wall to wall, get the two wall measurements at the front and the back of the cabinet — old bathrooms are rarely square, and a top templated to the wrong one of those numbers will not drop in.
Planning for a sink you have not bought
Buying a 36" cabinet expecting to add a second basin later. Two bowls need about 60" of cabinet to be usable, and a top cut for two on a 36" vanity leaves two cramped basins with no counter between them. If a double is the goal, plan the width for it now.
The second is ordering the handing to suit the drawing rather than the plumbing. The combo puts the trap on the bowl side, which is where the existing waste pipe has to be — or where it will have to be moved to. Check the position of the drain in the wall or the floor before choosing left or right.

- For a shared bathroom with one basin, yes — especially in the combo build, where the drawer bank gives each person their own storage. For two basins, no; that needs about 60".
- Should the sink be centred on a 36 inch vanity?
- Not necessarily. An offset bowl gives you a continuous run of usable counter on one side instead of two narrow strips, which is the more useful arrangement in practice. Just plan the mirror and lighting to the bowl, not to the cabinet.
