Forty-two inches: a wide vanity that still has one bowl

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Above thirty-six inches the bath range stops counting in threes and starts jumping, and forty-two is the first stop. It is a generous single vanity — enough counter for two people to use in sequence without collision — and it is the width at which the question quietly changes from how much cabinet to how many bowls.

Two cabinets, and no middle ground

A sink base at $542.75 and a sink-and-drawer combo at $874.25. That is the whole width. There is no full-height door base and no all-drawer version at 42", so this is a vanity width and nothing else.

One detail to confirm on the combo: at 30" and 36" it is sold as a matched left-hand and right-hand pair, while at 42" the dataset carries a single unit rather than a handed pair. Check the drawer position on the current spec sheet before you commit the plumbing, because that is the one thing a rough-in cannot adapt to afterwards.

How the wide end of the range is built

Past 36" the catalog narrows down to sink cabinets and stops offering a choice of fronts. Seen in one table, the logic is obvious: these are widths people buy to hold a basin and a drawer bank, not to hold towels.

Do not centre the bowl by reflex

With the open sink base, the top is yours to cut. A basin dead centre on a 42" top leaves roughly a foot and a half of counter on each side — two strips, each too narrow to be genuinely useful. Offsetting the bowl toward the door end instead gives you one continuous working surface against the wall, which is where a hairdryer, a shaving kit or a stack of folded towels actually goes.

The exception is a shared bathroom with a wide mirror, where a centred bowl and symmetrical sconces are the whole point of the elevation. That is a design decision rather than a practical one, and it is a perfectly good reason — just make it deliberately.

Two bowls too soon

Trying to fit two basins. Forty-two inches will physically accept two small bowls and there are tops made that way, but the result is two basins with no counter between them and two people knocking elbows. Below 60" of cabinet, one bowl and more drawers beats two bowls and none.

The second is the drain. A wide vanity usually means moving the waste, and moving a waste pipe is the expensive part of a bathroom. Establish where the existing drain is before choosing between the open sink base and the combo, because the combo fixes the bowl position and the sink base does not.

Common questions

Can you have a single sink in a 42 inch vanity?
Yes, and it is the intended use — both cabinets at this width are single-bowl. It gives you a generous run of counter beside the basin without the second drain a double vanity needs.
Is 42 inches wide enough for a double sink vanity?
No, not usefully. Two basins need about 60" of cabinet to leave working space between them. At 42" the better upgrade is the combo, which spends the extra width on drawers.
How much does a 42 inch vanity cabinet cost?
The sink base displays at $542.75 and the sink-and-drawer combo at $874.25. There are no other builds at this width.
What is the difference between a 42 and a 48 inch vanity?
At 48" the only cabinet offered is the combo at $975.00 — no plain sink base. So 42" is the widest vanity where you can still buy an open box and put the bowl wherever you like on the top.
Where should the sink go on a wide vanity?
Off-centre, toward the end you approach from, unless the room is built around a symmetrical mirror. Offsetting gives one continuous stretch of usable counter instead of two narrow strips.
