Forty-two inches: better known as a cabinet height, and what it means as a width

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Forty-two is two different questions wearing the same number. Almost everyone who types it means the height — the tall upper that runs to a nine-foot ceiling, or to an eight-foot one with no crown. A much smaller group means the width, and for them the catalog has ten units: one lift-up wall cabinet, three bases, two vanity pieces and four decorative parts. This page answers both, starting with the one you probably want.

Which forty-two do you mean?

Wall cabinets come in heights of 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 30, 36 and 42″, and the 42″ is the one people shop for by name because it takes a run of uppers to the ceiling. Over a 36″ counter with the standard 18″ gap it tops out at 96″ — eight feet exactly, so it needs a nine-foot ceiling to leave any reveal at all.

The only 42″-wide wall cabinet is a lift-up

W421224LU at $689.00 is the whole wall list at this width: a lift-up wall cabinet, listed at 42″ wide, whose door lifts rather than swings. The two figures in the code are its height and depth — confirm which is which on the listing — but the shape is a horizontal box, not a tall one, and it lives above a refrigerator, above a window, or as a bridge over a run where a swinging door would be at head height.

Depth is the useful part: a standard 12″ upper leaves the front half of a fridge uncovered, while a deeper box lets the appliance sit in a proper recess. Its 48″ sibling does the same job on a wider appliance for $747.50.

Three bases, and the widest sink base offered

SB42-1 at $572.00 is the largest sink base the catalog builds. It suits a big single bowl with a drainboard, a workstation sink with accessories, or a double bowl with real separation between the halves — and it leaves cabinet either side of the cutout for the plumbing rather than around it. B42-1 at $757.25 is the plain door box, and BLB42/45-1 at $767.00 the blind corner covering openings from 42″ to 45″.

A caution on all three: 42″ of unbroken shelf is a lot of span. We would not put the heavy end of the kitchen behind a single 42″ pair of doors when two 21″ boxes carry it better for about the same money.

The bathroom half, and the parts that dress the run

VSB42-34 at $542.75 is a 42″ vanity sink base; VSD42 at $874.25 is the sink-and-drawer combination, which puts a bowl at one end and a bank of drawers at the other. Forty-two inches is a good single-sink vanity width — enough counter beside the bowl to be useful without pushing into the 60″ double-sink territory where the bowls start crowding each other.

The decorative list adds a valance at $221.00 — the trim that closes the space over a sink window — and three lit floating shelves from $656.50 to $780.00 in different wood tones. Those need blocking and a power feed planned before the drywall closes.

Common questions

What is a 42 inch wall cabinet?
A wall cabinet 42″ high — the tallest height offered, available in every width from 9″ to 39″. Over a 36″ counter with an 18″ backsplash gap it tops out at 96″, so it suits a nine-foot ceiling or an eight-foot one with no crown moulding.
Is there a 42 inch wide wall cabinet?
One: W421224LU at $689.00, a lift-up door box listed at 42″ wide. Ordinary double-door uppers stop at 39″.
What size cabinet goes above a refrigerator?
A 24″-deep box rather than a standard 12″ upper, so it covers the appliance properly. The lift-up at this width is one option; the refrigerator wall cabinets at 30, 33 and 36″ wide, in heights from 12″ to 24″, are the other.
How much is a 42 inch sink base cabinet?
$572.00 for SB42-1, the widest sink base in the catalog. It suits a workstation sink or a widely separated double bowl; note that no roll-out or waste pull-out is built to fit it.
Is 42 inches a good vanity size?
For a single sink, yes — it gives real counter beside the bowl without the crowding a 60″ double brings. The sink base displays at $542.75 and the sink-and-drawer combination at $874.25.
