Brand vs. Brand

Fabuwood vs Wellborn

A stocked New Jersey line with one box spec across its framed series, or a family-owned Alabama semi-custom maker whose box, drawer and warranty change with the series you pick.

Fabuwood vs Wellborn usually comes down to one question from the homeowner: is the Alabama-made semi-custom cabinet really better than the stocked one the dealer quoted? The honest answer depends on which Wellborn series is on the paper. Wellborn Cabinet, family-owned in Ashland, Alabama since 1961, builds four kitchen series — Select, Premier and Estate framed, Aspire frameless — and the box, drawer and even the soft-close hardware step up from one to the next. Fabuwood ships pre-assembled from Newark, New Jersey, with a ½″ plywood box, dovetail drawers and Blum® hardware on every framed Allure cabinet. We carry Fabuwood and do not sell Wellborn; the Wellborn details below come from wellborn.com and its dealer documents.

Choose Fabuwood if…

  • You want a wood box, dovetail drawers and Blum® hardware in the base price without choosing a series or ticking an upgrade box
  • The kitchen fits standard widths and a Galaxy shaker in stock beats waiting on a production slot
  • A frameless slab look is on the table — Illume and Ovela come from the same dealer and warranty

Choose Wellborn if…

  • You want inset doors, stained cherry or hickory, or cabinets sized to the sixteenth to fit an odd wall
  • Made in the USA from lumber to finished door matters to you, and the quote is Premier or Estate
  • Your designer needs semi-custom depth changes, pocket doors or matched end panels a stocked line can’t build

Select, Premier, Estate or Aspire: Four Different Wellborn Boxes

Wellborn describes itself as running six product lines, framed and frameless, but a kitchen quote will almost always name one of four. Select is the budget framed series, pitched by Wellborn at “the modest remodeling project and new home construction.” Premier is the mainstream framed line with the widest door, species and finish menu. Estate sits on top with all-plywood construction as standard. Aspire is the full-access frameless line in matte, gloss, melamine and laminate surfaces. There is also Home Concepts, a stocked brand with a much shorter warranty, covered further down.

This is why a forum thread saying “Wellborn is better” or “Wellborn is worse” tells you little. A Select kitchen and an Estate kitchen share a logo and a factory, and not much else inside the cabinet. Before you set any Wellborn price next to a Fabuwood price, find the series name and the construction line on the quote — “standard” or “all plywood” — because those two words move the comparison more than the brand does.

From an Alabama Sawmill to a Newark Assembly Floor

Wellborn’s origin story is its strongest selling point, and it holds up. Paul Wellborn started the company in Ashland, Alabama in 1961; it is still family-owned, runs its own timber processing mill, and says every door, drawer and face frame is built in Alabama. It states that its cabinets meet the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association’s quality and strength requirements. It is not part of Cabinetworks Group or MasterBrand, the two consolidators behind most of the other semi-custom names you will see quoted.

Fabuwood is a hybrid. It assembles and finishes every cabinet at its own Newark, New Jersey facility — dowel, glue and pocket-screw joinery, Blum® hardware fitted on the line — from components made overseas, and its materials are CARB Phase 2 compliant. That is real US assembly, but not domestic manufacture in the sense Wellborn means it. If buying American from the tree onward is a deciding factor for you, Wellborn wins that point outright and we would rather say so than blur it.

Furniture Board, Plywood and the Drawer You Open Every Day

Here is what Wellborn’s own construction pages list. Select standard: ½″ wood-grain laminated furniture board sides, bottom and top, a ⅛″ MDF back, and a ¾″ furniture-board drawer box on epoxy-coated, self-closing side-mount slides, with a plywood or solid wood dovetail drawer as an option. Premier standard: the same furniture-board box, but with a ⅝″ solid hardwood dovetail drawer on undermount full-extension soft-close slides and smooth-close hinges. Both offer an all-plywood upgrade. Estate: ½″ plywood with a natural-finished veneer interior as standard, ¾″ plywood shelves and chrome shelf supports. All three use a ¾″ × 1¾″ kiln-dried solid wood face frame, mortised and tenoned.

Plywood, MDF and particle board edges: Wellborn’s Select and Premier boxes start in furniture board, with plywood as an upgrade.

Fabuwood’s framed Allure has a single spec: ½″ veneered plywood box, natural wood-veneer interior, solid wood door frames around a ⅜″ MDF center panel, a ⅝″ solid wood dovetail drawer, and Blum® Tandem plus runners with Blumotion hinges. Set that beside the Wellborn ladder and the pattern is clear. Against Select or standard Premier, Fabuwood has the more solid box. Against Premier with the all-plywood upgrade, or Estate, the boxes are peers and the drawers are the same ⅝″ dovetail thickness; the difference moves to hinge brand, door options and origin.

Inset Doors, Sixteenth-Inch Sizing and Custom Paint

Three things Wellborn can do that Fabuwood cannot. First, inset: Premier and Estate both offer inset door profiles alongside overlay, with the door set flush inside the face frame on concealed hinges. Fabuwood’s framed doors are full overlay and its frameless doors are slab, so there is no inset option anywhere in its catalog. Second, sizing: Wellborn’s semi-custom catalog lets most cabinets be modified in width, height and depth, and its Aspire specification book sets those changes in 1/16″ steps. Fabuwood builds standard widths on 3″ steps and relies on fillers and panels. Third, species: Wellborn cuts oak, maple, hickory and cherry, plus character maple and character cherry, in its own mill, so a stained cherry or rustic hickory kitchen is a normal order there.

Paint matching is closer than most shoppers expect. Wellborn’s ColorInspire program offers thousands of Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Valspar colors. Fabuwood runs a factory custom paint program that finishes any framed Allure door in a Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore shade, sprayed and cured at the factory rather than repainted afterward. Both add time to the order; neither applies to the other brand’s frameless slab lines, which use fixed factory surfaces.

Three-Week Production Slots and a 10-Year Line in the Warranty

Wellborn is quicker than its semi-custom label suggests. Its dealer customer guide lists a standard lead time of three weeks for Select and Premier, four weeks for Estate and inset items, one extra week for certain door profiles and species, and six weeks for ColorInspire, brush finishes and the You Draw It program. A rush program ships a capped number of items in about five business days for a 25% upcharge. Those are production figures before freight, and Wellborn notes they change, so confirm the current schedule with your dealer at quote time. Fabuwood’s Galaxy collection ships in 7 days to 3 weeks and the other Allure collections in 3–5 weeks, so on a plain shaker kitchen the gap is often smaller than a week or two.

The warranty is where the fine print matters. Wellborn gives a lifetime limited warranty to the original purchaser on Select, Premier, Aspire and its bath lines, and a separate lifetime warranty on its solid wood dovetail drawer boxes, hinges and drawer suspension. The same page states that the lifetime of cabinets is expected to be 10 years, and that claims are prorated against that expected life. Home Concepts carries a one-year limited warranty on parts. Fabuwood’s limited lifetime warranty covers the original purchaser and is handled through the selling dealer. Read each written warranty in full before treating the two “lifetime” labels as equal.

Fabuwood vs Wellborn on an Actual Quote

For a standard-size shaker kitchen, Fabuwood usually gives you the stronger cabinet for the money: a wood box, dovetail drawers and Blum® hardware without choosing a tier, a typical 10×10 of $4,000–$9,000, and a Galaxy B12 base at $560 as a reference point (Desert Oak and Natural Oak run about 20% higher). Wellborn does not publish retail prices; semi-custom kitchens typically land around $5,000–$18,000 for a 10×10, so a Select quote may undercut ours while an Estate inset quote will not come close.

Wellborn earns its price when the kitchen needs what a stocked line cannot build: inset doors, cherry or hickory stains, depth and width changes to the sixteenth, or a made-in-Alabama cabinet from lumber to finished door. If your plan uses none of those, you are paying for flexibility you will not use.
