A 12-inch vanity cabinet is storage, not a sink

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Nothing at 12 inches wide holds a sink. This is the filler-width bath cabinet — the column that goes beside the vanity, under a window, or in the gap between the vanity and the wall — and it is bought for drawers, for towels, or simply because the wall left twelve inches and a strip of blank drywall was the alternative.

Three boxes, one width

All three are 34 1/2" high and 21" deep, which is the standard bath box in this line and not the 24" depth of a kitchen base. They differ only in what is on the front.

What actually fits in twelve inches

Take the face frame off the outside dimension and the drawer boxes inside are meaningfully narrower than the label — plan on roughly 9" to 10" of usable drawer width and confirm the published interior before buying organiser trays. A hairdryer lies across it. A folded bath towel does not; rolled, it does.

The depth is the useful number here. At 21", these drawers are deep front-to-back for their width, which is why a 12" drawer stack is a better home for hair tools and small bottles than a wide, shallow drawer under a sink where the trap steals the middle.

How it lands in the run

Bath widths step in 3" from 12 up to 36, so a 12" unit is the piece that turns an awkward wall into a whole number: 12 plus 24 gives 36, 12 plus 30 gives 42, 12 plus 36 gives 48. Buy the countertop against the finished run of boxes plus the overhang you want, not against the sink cabinet alone.

Against a side wall, leave room to scribe. A 12" box pushed hard into a corner will bind its own drawer against the wall as the front projects past the casing — a filler strip of an inch or so keeps the drawer clear and hides the wall bow at the same time.

The cheap decision that costs you

Ordering the door version to save $35.75 and then living with a bathroom that has no drawers in it. In a small bath, the 12" drawer stack is often the only sorted storage in the room; the door version is a cupboard you stack things into and then dig through. If you can only afford drawers in one cabinet, this is the one.

The second is treating it as a half-vanity. It has no sink cutout, no plumbing clearance and no removed shelf — putting a bowl in one means cutting the deck of a cabinet that was not built to be cut.

Common questions

What is the smallest bathroom vanity cabinet size?
Twelve inches wide is the narrowest bath box offered, but it carries no sink. The narrowest cabinet built to take a bowl is 21" wide, so a genuine small vanity starts there.
How deep is a bathroom vanity cabinet?
Twenty-one inches, not twenty-four. This is the fact most buyers get wrong, because a kitchen base cabinet at the same 34 1/2" height is three inches deeper. Order a bath top sized for a 21" box or it will overhang the front by more than you intended.
What fits in a 12 inch bathroom cabinet?
Rolled towels, cleaning bottles, a small bin, or in the drawer version, hair tools and cosmetics sorted by drawer. Expect roughly 9" to 10" of usable interior width once the face frame is accounted for, and confirm that figure before buying trays.
Why does a 12 inch vanity drawer base cost so much?
Because a drawer stack is four boxes with dovetailed corners and four sets of soft-close glides, and none of that scales down with the width. At $601.25 it costs more than several wider single-door cabinets, which is normal for narrow drawer units in every catalog.
Can I put a 12 inch cabinet next to my vanity?
Yes, and it is the usual way to add drawers to a bathroom that has none. Plan the countertop across both boxes as one run, and leave a scribe allowance where the narrow unit meets a side wall.
