At 18 inches, the drawer costs six dollars
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Eighteen inches is the width where the usual money argument disappears. A full-height door cabinet lists at $383.50 and the same box with a drawer across the top lists at $390.00 — six dollars and fifty cents apart, which is not enough to decide anything. So decide it on use.
Three fronts, and what each one costs you
Every 18" bath box is the same carcass: 34 1/2" tall, 21" deep, one door width across. What changes is the front, and the front is what determines whether the cabinet holds tall things or sorted things.
| Front | Holds standing upright | What you give up | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-height door (VB18FD) | A bin, a plunger, tall bottles, a folded step stool | Every small item goes in a basket or gets lost | $383.50 |
| Drawer over door (VB18-34) | Most of the same, minus about five inches of clear height | The tallest items, and only those | $390.00 |
| Full drawer stack (VDB18-34) | Nothing tall — this is a sorted cabinet | Bulk storage, and $282.75 more than the drawer-over-door | $672.75 |
Still no sink at this width
The catalog does not build a bath sink base below 21", and there is a good reason: the drain, the trap and the supply valves need clear width behind the bowl, and a bowl small enough to fit an 18" box comfortably is smaller than most people will accept at a main basin.
So an 18" cabinet in a bathroom is storage — beside the vanity, opposite it, or standing alone on the far wall as the linen and towel cabinet. In a powder room where the fixture is a wall-hung or pedestal basin, one of these is often the only cabinet in the room, which is an argument for the drawer stack.
Why not just use a kitchen base cabinet
People ask this constantly, and the honest answer is that you can — the heights match exactly. A kitchen base and a bath base are both 34 1/2" tall in this line, so the finished counter height is identical.
The difference is depth: 24" in the kitchen against 21" here. Three inches does not sound like much until it is three inches taken out of the walking space in a bathroom that is five feet wide, or three inches of countertop overhanging a bath top made for a shallower box. Use the bath boxes in the bathroom. The saving from raiding the kitchen page is not real once the top is cut.
The look that costs you a drawer
Buying the full-height door for the look of an unbroken front and then discovering there is nowhere in the room to put a razor, a tube of toothpaste and a hairbrush. A door cabinet is a cupboard; everything small in it ends up in a plastic tub on a shelf. Bathrooms need drawers more than kitchens do, because bathroom items are small and numerous.
The other mistake is hardware. A bathroom drawer gets opened wet-handed several times a morning. Soft-close glides here are not a luxury item, they are the difference between a drawer that still runs true in ten years and one that does not.
Common questions
- Can you use kitchen cabinets as a bathroom vanity?
- You can, and the heights are identical at 34 1/2". The catch is depth — a kitchen base is 24" deep and a bath base is 21", so a kitchen box projects three inches further into the room and will not match a bath countertop cut for 21".
- How tall is a bathroom vanity cabinet?
- Thirty-four and a half inches for the box, before the top. Add the countertop and you land near the comfort height most adults prefer, which is taller than the 32" vanities common in older houses.
- Is an 18 inch vanity cabinet big enough for a sink?
- Not from this range — sink bases start at 21". An 18" box has no plumbing cutout and no removed shelf, so putting a bowl in one means modifying a cabinet that was not built for it.
- Should I get drawers or doors in a bathroom cabinet?
- Drawers, unless something tall has to stand inside. Bath storage is mostly small items that disappear at the back of a shelf, and at this width the drawer-over-door version costs $6.50 more than the plain door.
- How much is an 18 inch bathroom cabinet?
- Displayed prices run $383.50 for the full-height door, $390.00 for drawer-over-door and $672.75 for the full drawer stack.
