Twenty-four inches: the number the rest of the kitchen is measured against
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Twenty-four is the kitchen’s default number. It is the depth of every base cabinet and the standard countertop reach, the finished opening a full-size dishwasher needs, the first width where doors arrive in pairs, and the width every corner solution is built around. Seventy-two units carry it — more than any width except 30″ — and the reason is that the whole grid is organised around this measurement.
Why the same number turns up twice
A base cabinet is 34½″ high and 24″ deep before the countertop goes on. That depth is not arbitrary: it is what puts a sink, a dishwasher and a range in the same plane, and it is why a 24″-wide base is a cube. Cubes are what corners are made of, which is how this width ended up carrying twelve corner wall cabinets, four blind walls and four open corner boxes on its own.
The second consequence is the pair of doors. Below 24″ a box has one; here it has two, each swinging half as far into the room. That is why a designer will talk you out of a 21″ single door and into a 24″ pair — in a working aisle, half the swing beats an uninterrupted interior.
Seventy-two units, and the ones that define the width
The wall list alone runs to 33 cabinets. Most of that is corner work: WDC diagonal corners and WPC pie-cut corners across twelve codes, the four blind WBC boxes, and four NDWDC open corner units that show the interior instead of hiding it. The base list is shorter but more varied than at any narrower width.

Diagonal, pie-cut or blind: three ways to turn a corner
A diagonal corner wall (WDC) puts one angled door across the corner — easy to reach into, and the one that takes a glass front well, since GDWDC2430 through GDWDC2442 exist for exactly that at $100.75 to $139.75. A pie-cut (WPC) folds two hinged doors around the corner, keeping the run’s face unbroken. A blind corner (WBC) is the cheap answer: the part behind the adjacent cabinet is simply not accessible.
Prices sort them honestly: blind $354.25 to $497.25, diagonal $341.25 to $581.75, pie-cut $383.50 to $728.00, open NDWDC corners $757.25 to $939.25. Blind for a corner out of the way, pie-cut for one on show. The base equivalent is BRA24-1 at $588.25.
The four boxes people arrive on this page looking for
WAG2418 at $968.50 and WDCAG2418 at $757.25 are appliance garages — a 24″ upper with a door that lifts or rolls so the toaster and kettle stay on the counter unseen. BMC24-1 at $614.25 is the microwave base. DBS24-1 at $338.00 is the drawer bench seat, the cheapest base here and the only one meant to be sat on. CWO-B24-BLUM at $1,241.50 is the corner waste organizer.
Above all of it sits the 24″ pantry — eight double-door codes from $1,241.50 to $1,397.50 — the first tall unit that behaves like a larder rather than a cupboard.
Common questions
- How deep is a base cabinet?
- Twenty-four inches, before the countertop. Add the top and you are at about 25″ of finished reach, which is why 24″ turns up as both a depth and a width and why the corner cabinets are built around it.
- What size opening does a dishwasher need?
- A true 24″ finished opening for a full-size machine — that is cabinet face to cabinet face, not a 24″ cabinet you pull out later. Check the appliance rough-opening spec, since manufacturers vary by a fraction.
- What is the difference between a diagonal and a pie-cut corner cabinet?
- A diagonal corner shows one angled door across the corner and takes a glass front nicely. A pie-cut uses two doors hinged together that fold around the corner, keeping the run’s face flat. Diagonal runs $341.25 to $581.75 here; pie-cut $383.50 to $728.00.
- What is a blind corner cabinet?
- A box that runs into the corner with the far section hidden behind the adjacent cabinet and reachable only with effort. It is the cheapest way to turn a corner — $354.25 to $497.25 at this width — and the right answer when the corner is somewhere nobody works.
- How much is a 24 inch pantry cabinet?
- $1,241.50 to $1,397.50 across eight double-door codes, covering 84, 90, 93 and 96″ heights in both 12″ and 24″ depths. That is the first width where a pantry has two doors.
