Brand vs. Brand

Diamond vs American Woodmark

Both sell plywood as an option below the top of the range — Diamond by tier and upgrade, American Woodmark by package — and since May 2026 both answer to MasterBrand.

Diamond vs American Woodmark usually comes up at a Lowe’s kitchen desk, where a Diamond display and a Shenandoah display stand a few feet apart, or when a Home Depot Woodmark quote lands next to a Diamond quote from a dealer. Diamond is a framed, semi-custom MasterBrand line; the dealer version comes in three tiers — Vibe, Distinction and Edge — with dovetail drawers and Smart Stop soft-close in every tier and plywood standard at Edge. American Woodmark builds made-to-order cabinets under several names: Woodmark Cabinetry (sold only at Home Depot), Shenandoah (sold only at Lowe’s), Waypoint through dealers and Timberlake for homebuilders. On May 28, 2026 American Woodmark completed an all-stock merger with MasterBrand, so the two now share a parent company. We carry Diamond and ship it to every state; we don’t carry any American Woodmark brand, so those facts come from the manufacturer’s own websites.

Choose Diamond if…

  • You want dovetail drawers and soft-close standard at every tier, with plywood standard at Edge or added as an upgrade to Vibe or Distinction
  • A designer’s Sherwin-Williams chip needs matching (Edge), or a white kitchen suits PureStyle laminate (Vibe)
  • You’d rather have one dealer design, quote and ship the kitchen to your door, wherever you live

Choose American Woodmark if…

  • You plan to buy, finance and install through Home Depot or Lowe’s and want the cabinets from that desk
  • Shenandoah’s 10-business-day Express build fits a deadline better than a dealer production window
  • A promotion puts the Luxury package or All Plywood option on your quote at a price Diamond can’t reach

One Parent Company Since May 2026: What That Does and Doesn’t Mean

American Woodmark’s own homepage states that it finalized its all-stock merger with MasterBrand on May 28, 2026. MasterBrand’s announcement adds that American Woodmark is now a wholly owned subsidiary and that the combined business operates as MasterBrand, Inc., based in Beachwood, Ohio with a continued presence in Winchester, Virginia. MasterBrand already owned Diamond, Decorá, Mantra, Aristokraft, Thomasville and Omega; Woodmark Cabinetry, Shenandoah, Waypoint and Timberlake now sit in the same portfolio.

For someone ordering a kitchen this fall, the ownership change is mostly background. Neither company has announced changes to specific lines, so each brand still has its own construction page, its own soft-close hardware — Smart Stop on Diamond, CushionClose® on the American Woodmark brands — its own warranty document and its own sales channel. A Shenandoah box is not a relabeled Diamond box, and nothing published says it will become one. What shoppers can take from the merger is simple: the spec sheet printed on your quote, not the corporate family tree, tells you what arrives on the truck.

Six Brand Names, Two Home Centers and a Dealer Channel

Half the confusion is naming. On the Diamond side, two programs share one badge. The line we sell — Vibe, Distinction and Edge — is ordered through dealers. Diamond at Lowe’s is a different MasterBrand program built around Diamond NOW, an in-store line with select doors, colors and sizes you can take home the same day, plus three special-order design levels. The two programs aren’t interchangeable, so a Diamond NOW review tells you little about an Edge kitchen, and the reverse holds too.

American Woodmark spreads across more names. Woodmark Cabinetry is its Home Depot program, marketed as exclusive to that retailer. Shenandoah Cabinetry is sold exclusively at Lowe’s, a relationship the brand says goes back more than 40 years. Waypoint Living Spaces goes through independent design studios, Timberlake goes directly to homebuilders, and 1951 Cabinetry is listed alongside them. If you’re holding a quote that just says “American Woodmark,” ask which of these it is before comparing anything.

Shenandoah Next to Diamond in the Lowe’s Kitchen Aisle

This is the matchup most shoppers are really asking about, because Lowe’s puts both brands in the same showroom. Shenandoah sells the same cabinets in three construction packages. Essential is priced 20% below standard and uses furniture-grade side panels, half-depth base shelves, 18″-deep dovetailed drawers on side-mounted glides and six-way adjustable hinges. Select is the standard price: full-depth shelves, 21″ dovetailed drawers, concealed full-access glides and CushionClose® on doors, drawers and roll-outs. Luxury costs 20% more than standard and is where the plywood box, heavy-duty plywood shelves and matching plywood exterior sides come in.

Diamond’s dealer line has a ladder of its own, organized differently. Its tiers mainly change the door, species and finish, and the box is chosen on the order: Vibe and Distinction come standard with a furniture-board box and offer Plywood Ends or All-Plywood Construction as upgrades, while Edge is plywood as standard. That makes the fair comparison a Shenandoah Luxury quote against either a Diamond Edge quote or a Vibe or Distinction quote with all-plywood construction written on it. Held that way, you are pricing plywood against plywood, and the remaining differences are door selection, finish options, soft-close, lead time and who handles the order. We don’t sell Diamond at Lowe’s or Shenandoah, so for either of those store programs, get the construction package written on the quote before you sign.

Plywood by Tier or Plywood by Package

Both companies put the plywood decision on the order form. Diamond Vibe and Distinction use ½″ furniture-board sides with a natural maple laminate interior as standard; Plywood Ends swaps in plywood sides, and All-Plywood Construction makes the whole box plywood, both as paid upgrades. Edge is the tier where plywood is standard, with ½″ plywood sides, top and bottom and ¾″ plywood shelves. Woodmark Cabinetry describes its standard box as “a combination of hardwoods and engineered materials,” and offers an All Plywood option that covers the sides, floors, tops, shelves, backs, toe kick and corner blocks. A separate furniture-ends option upgrades the exposed sides to ¾″ plywood.

Three cube-shaped samples side by side: layered plywood with visible veneer plies, smooth brown MDF, and particleboard showing coarse wood chips under a white laminate top
Plywood, MDF and particleboard: Diamond’s plywood comes standard at Edge or as an upgrade, and American Woodmark’s with an option or package.

Drawers are dovetailed on both sides. Every Shenandoah package uses dovetailed drawer boxes, Woodmark’s are glued dovetail with plywood bottoms, and Diamond’s standard drawer is four-sided dovetailed solid hardwood in all three tiers. Soft-close is where the ladders differ: Diamond fits MasterBrand’s Smart Stop as standard in every tier, Woodmark includes CushionClose® hinges and glides, and Shenandoah adds CushionClose® from the Select package up. Essential’s spec lists six-way adjustable hinges without naming CushionClose®, so ask whether soft-close is included.

Both sides make a sound cabinet once the right option is ticked. The practical risk is a quote comparison in which one side is plywood and the other isn’t. Circle the box material and the drawer line on each quote before you look at the total, and on a Diamond Vibe or Distinction quote, ask for all-plywood construction by name if you want plywood.

Lead Times, Quotes and the Warranty Fine Print

Shenandoah’s headline is speed: the brand says every order is eligible for Express manufacturing, built and shipped from U.S. plants in 10 business days. Woodmark Cabinetry ties lead time to the design, material and production of each order. Diamond is built to order in all three tiers — 2–6 weeks of production on our product pages, then 7–14 business days of freight in the continental U.S. If a move-in date is fixed, ask each seller for a ship date in writing, not just an estimate.

Neither company publishes a retail price list, and home-center pricing moves with promotions, so we won’t quote a number for Woodmark or Shenandoah. For planning, our cost estimator puts semi-custom finishes at roughly $400–$650 per linear foot, cabinets only; Diamond Vibe sits near the low end of that band and Edge near the top. The honest way to compare is one drawing priced by both sellers: same widths, same box material, same drawer spec, same end panels and trim.

Warranty wording differs more than the headlines suggest. Diamond carries a limited lifetime warranty backed by MasterBrand. Woodmark’s limited lifetime warranty starts on delivery and lasts as long as you own the home. Shenandoah covers the original residential buyer while they live in the house, states in capitals that it is not transferable, and excludes labor for removal or reinstallation. Read the actual document for whichever line you pick.

Diamond vs American Woodmark: Where We Land

We sell only one of these, so read our view with that in mind. Diamond is the easier cabinet to buy well when you want soft-close and dovetail drawers without choosing a package: both are standard in every tier. The box is the one item to name — plywood is standard at Edge and an upgrade in Vibe and Distinction. It also covers a wide design range, from a hard-wearing laminate white at Vibe to a matched paint color and inset doors at Edge. American Woodmark makes the better choice when you want to buy and install through a home center, when Shenandoah’s Express build solves a scheduling problem, or when a sale makes its Luxury or All Plywood spec cheaper than the Diamond equivalent.

If you have a Home Depot or Lowe’s quote already, send us the layout and we’ll price it in Diamond at a comparable tier, with a free 3D design and an itemized quote usually back in 24–48 hours. You can also order Diamond door samples and check the finish in your own kitchen light before you decide. FAQ

Diamond vs American Woodmark FAQ

Common questions about how these two compare.

Yes. American Woodmark completed an all-stock merger with MasterBrand on May 28, 2026 and is now a wholly owned MasterBrand subsidiary. MasterBrand already owned Diamond. The brands still publish their own construction specs, hardware and warranties, and no product-line changes had been announced as of this writing.

It depends on the Shenandoah package. Essential and Select use furniture-grade side panels; only Luxury, priced 20% above standard, adds a plywood box and plywood shelves. Diamond’s dealer line works the same way by tier: Vibe and Distinction are furniture board unless you order plywood ends or all-plywood construction, and Edge is plywood as standard. Also note that Diamond at Lowe’s is its own MasterBrand program, separate from the Vibe, Distinction and Edge line sold through dealers, so compare the specific line on your quote.

Same manufacturer, different programs. American Woodmark makes Shenandoah (exclusive to Lowe’s) and Woodmark Cabinetry (exclusive to Home Depot). Their options are packaged differently: Woodmark lists a standard box with an All Plywood option and includes CushionClose® soft-close, while Shenandoah sells Essential, Select and Luxury packages and adds soft-close from Select up. Compare the construction option on each quote, not the store.

KraftMaid belongs to Cabinetworks Group, a separate company; Shenandoah and Diamond are both MasterBrand brands now. KraftMaid makes four-corner dovetail drawers standard and sells plywood boxes as an upgrade, Shenandoah reserves plywood for its Luxury package, and Diamond makes plywood standard at Edge and an upgrade in Vibe and Distinction. All three build dovetail drawers as standard. Our Diamond vs KraftMaid page covers the first pairing in detail.

Shenandoah says every order qualifies for Express manufacturing, built and shipped in 10 business days. Diamond’s dealer line is built to order with a 2–6 week production window on our product pages, plus 7–14 business days of continental freight. Confirm current timing on your quote.

No. We carry Diamond’s dealer line — Vibe, Distinction and Edge — but not Woodmark Cabinetry, Shenandoah, Waypoint, Timberlake or Diamond at Lowe’s. We’re happy to price your existing layout in Diamond so you can compare.
