Brand vs. Brand

Diamond vs KraftMaid

Two big semi-custom names from two different parent companies — both dovetail every drawer and sell plywood as an upgrade, so the split is sizing, species and where you buy.

Diamond vs KraftMaid is a contest between two framed semi-custom brands that shoppers usually meet in a big-box aisle before they ever see a dealer. Diamond is a MasterBrand line sold through dealers in three tiers — Vibe, Distinction and Edge — with dovetail drawers in every tier and plywood standard at Edge. KraftMaid, built in Middlefield, Ohio by Cabinetworks Group, sells through Home Depot, Lowe’s and more than 3,500 dealers, with solid wood dovetail drawers standard and dimensional modifications down to 1/16″. We carry Diamond and ship it nationwide; we do not carry KraftMaid, so its facts below come from the manufacturer’s own site.

Choose Diamond if…

  • You want dovetail drawers and Smart Stop soft-close in every tier, with plywood standard at Edge or added to a Vibe or Distinction quote
  • A white or painted kitchen suits PureStyle laminate at Vibe, or you need an exact Sherwin-Williams match at Edge
  • You’d rather order online from a dealer who designs, quotes and ships to your door in any state

Choose KraftMaid if…

  • You want a published ¾″ solid hardwood face frame and ¾″ solid wood drawer box spelled out on the standard cabinet
  • The room needs made-to-measure boxes — a width or depth that only a 1/16″ modification solves
  • You want hickory or rustic alder, or you prefer to buy in person at Home Depot or Lowe’s

Two Parent Companies, Not One

A lot of shoppers assume these two come from the same factory group, and it’s an easy mistake: both are large American semi-custom brands with framed boxes and lifetime coverage. They don’t. Diamond belongs to MasterBrand, which also owns Decorá, Mantra and Aristokraft. KraftMaid belongs to Cabinetworks Group, which describes itself as the country’s largest privately held cabinet maker and also owns Merillat, Medallion, Schuler and Yorktowne.

That matters for one practical reason: nothing about one brand’s spec sheet carries over to the other. Soft-close systems, finishing processes, box panels and warranty paperwork are each company’s own. So the useful comparison is not “same cabinet, different label” but two independent answers to what a mid-market framed cabinet should include as standard — and on the box and drawer they land closer than most shoppers expect.

Box and Drawer: Closer Than the Brochures Suggest

Ask which one is better built and the answer is closer than most shoppers expect, because the two brands make the same two choices. Neither puts plywood in its standard box below the top tier. Diamond Vibe and Distinction use a furniture-board box with ½″ sides and a natural maple laminate interior, with Plywood Ends or All-Plywood Construction as paid upgrades chosen per order. KraftMaid’s own construction page lists plywood, MDF and particleboard among its box panels, with all-plywood construction and ½″ plywood ends as an upgrade. Each brand also has a tier where plywood is standard: Diamond Edge, with ½″ plywood sides, top and bottom and ¾″ plywood shelves, and KraftMaid Vantage, the dealer-only tier.

Dovetail joinery like this is standard in every KraftMaid drawer and in all three Diamond tiers.

The drawers match up too. KraftMaid builds every drawer box from ¾″ solid wood with dovetail joints on all four corners, 4″ sides, and hangs it on Whisper Touch® soft-close glides. Diamond’s standard drawer is a four-sided dovetailed solid hardwood box in all three tiers, closing on Smart Stop. Dovetail joinery isn’t the tie-breaker here; side thickness and glide are the drawer details to compare line by line on the two quotes.

KraftMaid also publishes ¾″ solid hardwood face frames, ¾″ full-depth shelves and a 14-step DuraKraft™ Plus finish; Diamond Edge lists a ¾″ solid wood face frame and ¾″ plywood shelves. The fair reading: an upgraded KraftMaid and an upgraded Diamond Vibe or Distinction are built on the same idea, and Diamond Edge and KraftMaid Vantage are both plywood as standard. A tier name alone doesn’t tell you which box a quote was written with, so name it — ask for all-plywood construction on a Vibe or Distinction quote if you want plywood, and ask a KraftMaid seller the same question.

Lowe’s, Home Depot or a Dealer: Which Version You’re Pricing

Much of the confusion behind this search starts in the store. The Diamond name at Lowe’s is MasterBrand’s Diamond at Lowe’s program: an in-stock line called Diamond NOW plus special-order levels. It is not the Vibe, Distinction and Edge dealer line we sell, and the construction and options differ. KraftMaid, meanwhile, sells at Home Depot and at Lowe’s as well as through independent kitchen showrooms, so one Lowe’s aisle can put both names side by side.

The version question cuts both ways. KraftMaid’s dealer-only Vantage tier makes all-plywood standard, which the big-box core line treats as an upgrade. Diamond’s dealer collections are organized differently from what a Lowe’s kiosk quotes. When you read owner reviews or forum threads about either brand, check which program the writer bought — an in-stock line off the shelf and a built-to-order dealer kitchen aren’t the same purchase.

Door Catalog, Wood Species and Made-to-Measure Sizing

On raw door count the two are close: Diamond lists 125+ styles across its tiers, and KraftMaid’s door browser shows 122 across 14 wood types. How you reach them differs. Diamond sorts by tier, so the same shaker shape — Bryant, for example — comes as PureStyle laminate or paint in Vibe, genuine maple, cherry or oak in Distinction, and a custom edge profile in any of 2,000+ Sherwin-Williams colors in Edge. KraftMaid lets you pick the species directly, and its list reaches hickory and rustic alder, which Diamond’s published tier specs don’t list.

Sizing is KraftMaid’s cleanest win. Its special-order program modifies width, depth and height in 1/16″ steps, so an odd gap gets a cabinet built to it rather than a standard box plus filler. Diamond’s dealer spec book covers modifications too, and most layouts never need more than that; for an old house with nothing square, ask us what the Diamond book allows for the exact cabinets before you assume it matches KraftMaid’s range.

Two smaller points for painted kitchens. Vibe’s PureStyle is a thermally fused laminate that resists the joint cracks painted wood can show over time, which makes it a good fit for a white kitchen with heavy traffic. And inset doors exist in Diamond only at Edge, across six door families; if inset is the goal in KraftMaid, confirm current availability with whoever is quoting it.

Quotes, Upgrades and Lead Times

Neither brand publishes a price sheet, and both quote each layout separately. As a benchmark, the semi-custom band on our cost estimator runs roughly $400–$650 per linear foot at retail, cabinets only; Diamond Vibe sits toward the bottom of it and Edge toward the top, and KraftMaid is typically priced in the same semi-custom range. Where a real gap shows up is in the upgrades: add plywood to a KraftMaid quote or to a Diamond Vibe or Distinction quote, and the comparison changes. Always line up quotes spec for spec, not total against total.

Timing is close. Diamond is built to order in every tier — 2–6 weeks of production on our product pages, then 7–14 business days of freight in the continental U.S. KraftMaid’s FAQ gives about four to six weeks of production plus a week for delivery. Treat both as planning numbers and let the quote confirm them. Both carry a lifetime limited warranty from the manufacturer; ask for the written terms with any quote, since “limited” comes with exclusions.

Diamond vs KraftMaid: How We’d Call It

We sell only one of these, so weigh our view accordingly. Diamond is the stronger default if you want a laminate option for a hard-used white kitchen, a paint match from a designer’s chip, or inset doors at Edge, with plywood standard at Edge and available as an upgrade in Vibe and Distinction — and it ships assembled to all 50 states from us, with a free 3D design and itemized quote in 24–48 hours.

KraftMaid earns the order when a wall needs a cabinet modified to the sixteenth, or when you want hickory, alder or an in-person big-box purchase. If you already hold a KraftMaid quote, send us the layout: we’ll price it in Diamond at the comparable tier, and you can order Diamond door samples to check the finish in your own light before deciding.
