Brand vs. Brand

Fabuwood vs Dura Supreme

A Minnesota factory that builds each order to a showroom designer’s drawing, against a New Jersey value line you can price off a list and have delivered in weeks.

Fabuwood vs Dura Supreme is a question people usually ask after a showroom quote lands well above the one from an online dealer. The two brands are not trying to do the same job. Dura Supreme, founded in 1954 and based in Howard Lake, Minnesota, builds every cabinet in-house for the specific kitchen, in two constructions: Crestwood (framed, with inset available) and Bria (frameless). Since 2024 it has been part of MasterBrand. Fabuwood is a stocked, pre-assembled line from Newark, New Jersey, with a plywood box and Blum® hardware as its only spec. This page follows the price gap to the places it actually goes: box material, inset doors, wood species and finishes, lead time and warranty terms. We carry Fabuwood, and St. Martin as our made-to-order line. We do not sell Dura Supreme; its details below come from durasupreme.com.

Choose Fabuwood if…

  • Your layout works in standard widths and you want plywood, dovetail drawers and Blum® hardware without pricing an upgrade list
  • You need cabinets on site in weeks, and a Galaxy shaker or a frameless slab covers the look
  • You want a published price to budget against before anyone draws the kitchen

Choose Dura Supreme if…

  • You want Crestwood inset with a beaded frame, or cherry, alder, hickory or quarter-sawn oak under a glaze
  • The design depends on modified or custom-drawn cabinets that a stocked line doesn’t make
  • You prefer working face to face with a local showroom designer and a Minnesota-built product

A 1954 Minnesota Shop Inside MasterBrand, and a Newark Value Line

Dura Supreme started in Don Stotts’s garage in Minnesota in 1954 and grew, through ten expansions, into its Howard Lake plant. In May 2024 Supreme Cabinetry Brands, the parent of Dura Supreme and Bertch, announced a definitive agreement to be acquired by MasterBrand from GHK Capital Partners, and Dura Supreme’s own about page now says it joined the MasterBrand family that year. That puts it under the same corporate roof as Diamond, Decorá and Mantra, though it keeps its own plant, catalog and showroom dealer network. The company describes its cabinets as made in the USA with globally sourced components.

Fabuwood runs its headquarters and assembly in Newark, New Jersey and announced a Tijuana plant in January 2025, so we don’t describe it as all-American. The bigger contrast is how you buy. A Dura Supreme kitchen starts with a showroom designer measuring the room and ends with a factory order built for that plan. A Fabuwood kitchen is chosen from a stocked catalog with list prices, assembled before it ships, and usually designed by the dealer, which in our case means a free 3D layout and an itemized quote within 24–48 hours.

Furniture Board Unless You Tick the Plywood Box

Here is the construction line Dura Supreme publishes in its own comparison chart. Crestwood, the framed line, uses a ¾″ × 1½″ solid hardwood face frame with I-beam construction, and ½″ furniture board for the end panels, top, bottom and back, with a ½″ plywood upgrade for each. Shelves are ¾″ furniture board or ¾″ plywood. Bria, the frameless line, steps up to ¾″ furniture board or ¾″ plywood for the sides, top and bottom, with a ¼″ MDF-core back on a hanging rail. Both lines come with ⅝″ hardwood dovetail drawers and roll-out shelves, a premium solid maple drawer as an option, Blumotion soft-close undermount glides, and soft-close hinges. Bria alone offers a stainless steel drawer box.

Furniture board (left) and plywood (right): Dura Supreme builds its standard boxes from the first and charges extra for the second.

Fabuwood’s framed Allure has no construction menu: ½″ veneered plywood box, ¾″ plywood shelves, a solid wood face frame, ⅝″ dovetail drawers and Blum® hardware on every cabinet. So on the box, a standard Crestwood order is a step down from Allure, and a Crestwood order with the plywood upgrade is roughly level with it. When two quotes seem far apart, check that line first. The Dura Supreme price you were given may or may not include plywood, and the answer changes what you are comparing.

Hand-Fitted Inset and Beaded Frames on Crestwood

Crestwood offers three ways for a door to meet the frame: full overlay, standard overlay (more frame shows between doors), and inset, where each door and drawer front is hand-fitted inside the face frame. Inset buyers can also pick a beaded or non-beaded frame. One catch from Dura Supreme’s own page: soft-close is built into every Crestwood door, drawer and roll-out except inset doors hung on the optional decorative barrel hinges.

Fabuwood has no inset at all. The Allure doors are full overlay and the Illume and Ovela doors are frameless slab. If an inset kitchen is what sent you to a Dura Supreme showroom, no Fabuwood order will get you there, and it is better to know that before comparing prices. Inset costs more at every maker because each door has to be fitted to its opening; our own guide puts the premium at 15–30% wherever it is offered.

Cherry, Knotty Alder and Glazes vs a Stocked Finish List

Much of what Dura Supreme charges for is choice. Its woods page lists cherry, quarter-sawn white oak, maple, knotty alder, red oak, hickory and rustic hickory, along with exotic veneers (straight grain oak, bamboo, walnut, shale) and contemporary surfaces such as acrylic high gloss and ultra matte, matte and textured TFL, foils and laminate. On top of that come layered stains with coffee, shadow or charcoal glazes, distressed Heirloom, Patina and Weathered finishes, and custom color matching. Its door catalog runs well past a hundred styles and variants, many offered in both overlay and inset.

Fabuwood works from a fixed menu: 55+ finishes across its lines, including the 14-color Galaxy shaker and 15 Catalina finishes on the frameless Illume. For a color outside that menu, the custom paint program finishes framed Allure doors in any Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore color at the factory. What Fabuwood does not offer is stained cherry, alder, hickory or glazed finishes. If one of those is the look you want, that is a real reason for the higher quote, not showroom markup.

Order-Built Timing and the MasterBrand Warranty Terms

Dura Supreme talks about “clockwork-like lead times” but does not publish any weeks, and every order is built after the design is final. Our tier guide puts typical semi-custom orders at 4–8 weeks and custom at 8–16+ weeks, but that is a general range, not a Dura Supreme figure, so get the current schedule from the showroom in writing. Fabuwood’s Galaxy collection ships in 7 days to 3 weeks and the other Allure collections in 3–5 weeks. On a tight remodel, that difference can matter as much as price.

Dura Supreme’s residential warranty, updated April 15, 2025, is issued by MasterBrand Cabinets LLC. It is a limited lifetime warranty for the first residential purchaser in a primary or secondary home, and it does not pass to a buyer if the house is sold. Rentals, including part-time vacation rentals, go to a separate commercial warranty. Warping that shows up after the first 365 days is excluded, decorative hardware is covered for one year, and lighting and powered parts for two. Fabuwood’s limited lifetime warranty also covers the original purchaser and is handled through the selling dealer. Read both documents before you treat the two “lifetime” labels as the same.

Want Dura Supreme’s Tier? Look at St. Martin

Some shoppers compare these two brands and find that what they really want is inset doors, a hand-applied finish and a kitchen built to order, but they would rather buy it from us. That is what we carry St. Martin for. Heritage is framed inset: doors sit flush inside a ⅞″ solid wood face frame, with eleven inset door styles and 49 finishes (16 paints on smooth hardwood, the same 16 on open-grain oak, and 17 stains in rift white oak, walnut and cherry). Vista is the frameless full-access version with the same 49-finish program. Both use ⅝″ plywood sides, ¾″ solid birch dovetail drawers and Blum® soft-close hardware, and both are built to order and quoted per project.

To see a color, order a $35 Vista door sample in that finish. Heritage samples have been retired, but Vista shares every Heritage finish, so the color will match. Lead times run several weeks from design approval, which is closer to Dura Supreme than to Fabuwood, and we confirm the current schedule with the quote. If you have a Dura Supreme drawing, send it and we will price the same layout in St. Martin Heritage and in Fabuwood Allure. Then you can see what inset costs in each line and decide whether you need it.

FAQ

Fabuwood vs Dura Supreme FAQ

Common questions about how these two compare.

It depends on what the quote includes. Standard Crestwood uses ½″ furniture board for the box, and plywood is an upgrade; Fabuwood Allure comes standard with a ½″ veneered plywood box, ⅝″ dovetail drawers and Blum® hardware. Where Dura Supreme clearly offers more is inset doors, species like cherry and knotty alder, glazed and distressed finishes, and cabinets built or modified for your specific kitchen.

MasterBrand. In May 2024, Supreme Cabinetry Brands, the parent of Dura Supreme and Bertch, announced it would be acquired by MasterBrand from GHK Capital Partners, and Dura Supreme says it joined MasterBrand that year. Its current residential warranty is issued by MasterBrand Cabinets LLC. The cabinets are still built in Howard Lake, Minnesota.

Construction. Crestwood is Dura Supreme’s framed line, with a solid hardwood face frame, ½″ furniture board or plywood box, and full overlay, standard overlay or inset doors. Bria is its frameless, full-access line, with ¾″ furniture board or plywood sides and an optional stainless steel drawer box. Both come with dovetail drawers and soft-close hardware.

No. Fabuwood’s framed Allure doors are full overlay, and Illume and Ovela are frameless slab. For inset from a line we carry, St. Martin Heritage builds framed inset to order in 49 finishes.

Dura Supreme does not publish lead times, and each order is built after the design is approved, so ask the showroom for the current schedule. Fabuwood Galaxy ships in 7 days to 3 weeks and the other Allure collections in 3–5 weeks.

No. Dura Supreme is sold through its own showroom dealers. We carry Fabuwood, and St. Martin for made-to-order framed inset and frameless kitchens, and we can price either against a Dura Supreme drawing.
