The vertical members are stiles, the horizontals are rails, and the assembly is the face frame. It works like a picture frame around the box opening: it squares the cabinet, stiffens it, gives hinges solid hardwood to bite into, and creates that familiar strip of wood between and around the doors on a traditional American kitchen.
A frameless cabinet deletes all of that. The box uses thicker panels — typically 5/8" to 3/4" rather than the 1/2" common on framed sides, because the panels now do the structural work — and the raw front edges are simply covered with matching edge banding. Doors mount directly to the inside of the box sides. There's no lip, no stile between double doors, no rail between a drawer and the door below it. The industry calls it "full access" literally: the opening you reach through is the entire interior width of the cabinet.

Out of that came the German "System 32" standard — rows of 5mm holes bored at 32mm intervals down each cabinet side, letting one automated boring pattern locate hinges, slides, and shelf pins on any cabinet. The face frame didn't survive the redesign because it had no job left: thicker panels supplied the rigidity, and the new cup hinges mounted straight to the box. That's why "European style cabinets," "Euro-box," and "System 32" all mean frameless — when a designer calls a kitchen "European," this construction is what they're describing, usually wearing slab doors.
Both systems crossed the ocean long ago. European factories build framed cabinets for the U.S. market, and American plants — including Fabuwood's in Newark, New Jersey — build true frameless lines. The labels describe lineage, not geography.
The Storage Math for a 10×10 Kitchen
"Frameless holds more" appears in every comparison ever written, usually without a single number attached. Let's actually do it, using the industry's 10×10 benchmark — about 20 linear feet of cabinetry, say 11 feet of bases and 8 feet of walls.
Start with openings. In a framed cabinet, every opening is smaller than the box: a 1.5" stile on each side takes roughly 3 inches out of each cabinet's frontage. In a frameless cabinet the only intrusions are the 3/4" box sides — about 1.5 inches per cabinet. Across a realistic layout:
- Base run (132" across five cabinets, ~22.5" interior depth, ~28.5" interior height): frameless accessible width ≈ 124.5", framed ≈ 117" — roughly 46.2 vs 43.4 cubic feet.
- Wall run (96" across four cabinets, ~10.5" interior depth, ~28" interior height): frameless ≈ 90" against 84" framed — roughly 15.3 vs 14.3 cubic feet.
Box openings alone hand frameless about 3.8 extra cubic feet — a 6–7% gain. But openings undersell it, because the frame costs you twice more:
Drawers are where it compounds. A drawer box can only be as wide as the opening it passes through. In a 30-inch framed drawer base, the frame narrows the opening to about 27 inches and the drawer box builds out around 26 inches wide; the frameless version runs about 28 inches. Two extra inches on every drawer, at full depth — on a three-stack drawer base that's another 1.5 cubic feet, in the layer of the kitchen you use most.
Shelves finish the job. Framed shelves sit behind the frame lip, which shadows the front inch-and-a-half of every shelf and turns the area behind stiles into the place casserole dishes go to be forgotten. Frameless shelves pull out at full width, everything reachable.
Add it up and real, usable storage lands right at the 10–15% the industry quotes — call it 6 to 8 cubic feet in a 10×10 kitchen. For scale, the entire interior of a 24-inch base cabinet is about 8 cubic feet: going frameless is like being handed an extra base cabinet without moving a wall. - Open a door and look at the opening's edge. A flat band of solid wood about 1.5 inches wide surrounding the opening — proud of the box interior, like a window casing — is a face frame. If you see only the panel's 3/4" banded edge, the box is frameless.
- Look for the hole rows. Frameless interiors show the System 32 fingerprint: neat vertical rows of small holes up both side panels. Framed shelf holes sit further back, behind the frame lip.
- Check double-door cabinets for a center stile. A vertical wood divider between the two doors means framed. (Its absence proves nothing — butt-door framed cabinets skip it — but its presence is conclusive.)
