How to Order Kitchen Cabinets Online in 5 Steps, From Tape Measure to Delivery

Here is how to order kitchen cabinets online in five steps: measure the room, order door samples of your finalists, get a free 3D design with an itemized quote, check that quote line by line and place the order, then schedule, receive and inspect the delivery. Done in that order, the design and quote take about two days; the rest of the calendar is manufacturing and freight, anywhere from a few weeks for stocked lines to about two months for made-to-order ones, and your quote shows the lead time for the line you pick.

We sell cabinets for a living, and we're builders who sell cabinets, so we've watched a lot of orders from both ends: the quote on the screen and the pallet at the curb. This guide walks through each step exactly as it works on our site, with the turnaround times and policy terms we publish. If you're still deciding which kind of seller to buy from, start with our comparison of where to buy kitchen cabinets online; this article picks up once you're ready to order.

Key Takeaways
  • Rough numbers start the design; exact numbers finish it. Wall lengths, ceiling height and the locations of windows, doors, plumbing and appliances are enough to get a first layout.
  • Samples come before the order, not after. Color variation from website images isn't a reason for a return, and a door sample costs $25 for most brands ($35 for St. Martin Vista and NOMA).
  • The design is free and fast. A designer replies within one business day, and the 3D rendering plus itemized quote arrive within 24–48 hours, with no obligation.
  • Read the quote like a contract. Every cabinet on the rendering should be a line on the quote, along with fillers, panels, toe kick, moldings and itemized shipping.
  • Changes get expensive fast. Cabinets are final sale; cancellation is only possible before production starts, only if the manufacturer accepts, and with a restocking fee.
  • You are the delivery inspector. Standard delivery is curbside. Count boxes, write damage on the receipt, photograph it, and never sign "clear" if anything looks wrong.

The Five Steps at a Glance

Each step ends with something in your hands: a sketch, a door, a rendering, an order confirmation, a pallet. The times below come from our published policies; the manufacturing window is the one that varies most by line, and the lead time on your quote overrides any general range.

Five-step timeline infographic for ordering cabinets online: measure, samples, design plus quote in 24-48 hours, order with 2-6 weeks of made-to-order processing and delivery with 7-14 business days of transit, the typical ranges in our shipping policy
The design and quote take 24–48 hours. Our shipping policy lists typical ranges of 2–6 weeks of processing for made-to-order cabinets and 7–14 business days of transit in the continental US; your quote gives the lead time for your line.
  1. Measure. An evening with a tape measure and a sketch. Rough numbers are enough to start.
  2. Samples. Order doors for your two or three finalist finishes while the design is being drawn, so they arrive in time to decide.
  3. Design and quote. Send the sketch and photos; a designer replies within one business day and the 3D rendering plus itemized quote come back within 24–48 hours. Revisions typically take one to two business days each.
  4. Order and pay. Approve the quote or check out from the cart. Processing starts once payment is confirmed and every measurement and finish is final.
  5. Delivery and inspection. The freight carrier calls 24–48 hours ahead. You count, inspect and sign, then unpack everything within 48 hours.

Step 1: Measure the Room (Rough Numbers Are Enough to Start)

A designer needs a floor plan, not a survey. Our design service page says it plainly: rough numbers are enough to start. What matters is that nothing is missing, because a missing window is harder to fix than a wall that's half an inch off.

For the first layout, send:

  • Every wall length where cabinets will go, corner to corner, plus the ceiling height.
  • Windows and doors: where they start, how wide they are, and the height of each window sill.
  • The centers of the sink drain, water lines, gas line and any vent or duct.
  • Appliances you're keeping or buying, with their widths (a 30″ or 36″ range, a 36″ refrigerator, a 24″ dishwasher), and photos of each wall.

Before you place the order, those rough numbers have to become exact ones. Our terms of service say the design is only as accurate as the measurements behind it, and the return policy lists incorrect measurements among the things that aren't returnable. Our guide on how to measure a kitchen for cabinets walks through the method, and the kitchen dimensions to know before buying cabinets covers the clearances a layout has to respect. If a contractor is doing the work, ask them to check the final numbers on site before you approve anything.

Step 2: Order Door Samples Before You Commit to a Finish

A common regret in an online cabinet order is a finish that looked different on the screen. Our return policy lists "color or finish variations from website images" among the things we can't take back, and every other final-sale seller works the same way. A real door, looked at in your kitchen's morning and evening light next to your countertop sample, is how you avoid that.

What samples cost with us:

  • $25 for most brands. Fabuwood samples list higher and sell at $25 after the sitewide discount.
  • $35 for St. Martin Vista and NOMA. We no longer stock St. Martin Heritage samples; Vista and Heritage share the same finish program, so a Vista sample in the same finish is the stand-in.
  • Final sale. Samples aren't returnable, but a sample that arrives damaged is replaced at no cost.

Two or three finalists is the right number; ten samples mostly produce indecision. Start on the door samples page, which is organized by brand, or go straight to a brand page such as Fabuwood door samples. If you'd like the sample cost to count toward the kitchen, ask your designer about it when you order; we don't promise a credit on every order. For what to look at once the door arrives, including the 24-hour method we recommend, see our guide to ordering and evaluating kitchen cabinet samples.

Step 3: Get a Free 3D Design and an Itemized Quote

This is the step that separates an online order from a guess. You send the measurements and photos through our design service (the request form takes about two minutes), and one designer handles your kitchen from the first reply to the final order. Here is what comes back and when:

  • Within one business day: a reply from your designer, usually with a few questions about style, budget and the lines you're considering.
  • Within 24–48 hours: a photorealistic 3D rendering of your room and an itemized quote with every cabinet and accessory priced line by line.
  • One to two business days per revision: move the sink, swap a wall of uppers for shelves, price a second door style.
  • One to two weeks, typically: the whole back-and-forth from first request to a final design.

There is no obligation. You keep the renderings and the quote whether you buy or not. That's also the honest answer to anyone searching for an online kitchen cabinet design tool: a person who knows the catalogs will usually catch more than a planner app, though our comparison of free kitchen layout tools is useful if you want to sketch ideas yourself first.

Two of the eleven lines we sell can only be bought this way. St. Martin and NOMA have no add-to-cart button and no public price list; each kitchen is priced from your layout, and the quote comes back itemized with the lead time for your door and finish. For a closer look at what the service includes, see our free 3D kitchen design and how our cabinet design service works.

How to Read the Quote Before You Say Yes

The quote is the order. Whatever is on it is what gets built and shipped, and whatever isn't on it won't show up. Put the rendering and the quote side by side and work through this list:

  1. Every cabinet on the drawing is a line on the quote. Count them wall by wall. Each line should carry a SKU, and the SKU tells you the type, width and height; our guide to reading cabinet SKU codes decodes them.
  2. The small parts are there. Fillers beside walls and appliances, finished end panels on exposed sides, scribe molding, toe kick, and crown or light rail if the rendering shows them. These are the easiest lines to miss on a first quote, and they're what stall an installer on day one. Our explainer on end panels, scribe molding and fillers shows where each goes.
  3. Finish and door style are named on every line, including the island if it's a second color.
  4. Assembled or RTA is stated. Some lines are sold both ways, and the price differs.
  5. Box and hardware specs match what you expect. Drawer slides, hinges and box material vary by line and sometimes by upgrade. For example, KCD's Essential and Builder lines ship with three-quarter-extension, non-soft-close slides unless you upgrade. If it matters to you, ask for it in writing.
  6. Appliance openings match your appliances. Check the refrigerator, range and dishwasher widths against the spec sheets of the models you're actually buying.
  7. Shipping is itemized. Our shipping cost is calculated from order size, weight and destination and shown before you pay. Confirm the delivery type and any extras on your quote.
  8. Handles and knobs are accounted for. We don't sell decorative knobs or pulls, so plan to buy your own; hinges and drawer slides come with the cabinets.

This checklist is only about reading our quote. For the broader list of questions to ask any seller and the mistakes buyers make, see our kitchen cabinet buying checklist.

Step 4: Place the Order and Pay

There are two ways to check out, and you don't have to use the design service to order.

  • From the cart. If you already have professional plans or know exactly which SKUs you need, add them to the cart and check out. Nine of our eleven lines sell this way.
  • From an approved quote. Approve your designer's quote, and our team finalizes measurements, finishes and specifications with you before the order is processed. This is the only route for St. Martin and NOMA.

We accept major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), debit cards, and wire transfers for large orders. A credit card adds federal billing-dispute rights under the Fair Credit Billing Act: the FTC's guide to disputing credit card charges covers charges for goods you didn't accept or that weren't delivered as agreed, with a 60-day window after the bill. Under our terms, payment is due when the order is placed unless other arrangements are made in writing, so if a large custom order needs a different schedule, get it on the quote. To spread the cost, Shop Pay Installments is built into checkout for eligible orders, with interest-free bi-weekly plans or monthly plans that can carry interest; the exact terms show before you confirm. Our financing page has the details, and our guide to cabinet financing and buy now, pay later explains how those plans compare.

This is also where the assembled-or-flat-pack decision becomes final. J&K is the one line we sell only as ready-to-assemble (RTA); US Cabinet Depot, KCD, Tribeca and Modernform let you pick either format on the quote; Fabuwood, Mantra, Diamond, Decorá, St. Martin and NOMA arrive assembled. RTA costs less and ships flat; assembled saves days of work before installation starts. Our RTA vs pre-assembled comparison does the labor math.

One detail worth knowing: under our terms, an order confirmation email isn't the same as acceptance. An order is accepted when we give written confirmation or ship it, and processing time starts only after payment is confirmed and every measurement, specification and finish is final. The federal rule on mail and online orders works on the same logic. The FTC's business guide to the Mail, Internet or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule says a seller's shipping clock starts when it receives a "properly completed" order, meaning payment plus all the information needed to fill it. An order still waiting on a finish choice isn't one yet.

Why Changes Get Expensive After You Click Buy

Most cabinets are made or packed to order for your dimensions and finish, so they can't be resold to the next customer. That's why all sales are final with us, including change of mind, customer measurement errors, ordering mistakes and color variation from website images, and why steps 1 through 3 matter so much. Our buying checklist covers what to ask any seller about returns.

Cancellation is possible only before production starts, only if the manufacturer accepts it, and with a restocking fee; our return policy sets out the terms. Once an order ships, it can't be cancelled. If you do need a change, call 609-900-3358 the moment you know; hours matter here.

How Long It Takes: Processing Plus Transit

Delivery time is two clocks added together: how long the manufacturer takes to build and pack your order, and how long freight takes to reach you. Our shipping policy gives these typical ranges:

Stage Typical time Notes
Processing, in-stock items 1–3 business days Starts once payment and all details are final
Processing, made-to-order cabinets 2–6 weeks Varies by manufacturer and line
Processing, custom orders 4–8 weeks Quoted at the time of order
Transit, continental US 7–14 business days Freight carrier; carrier and tracking sent when it ships
Transit, Alaska and Hawaii 2–4 weeks Shipping quoted separately

For planning, our shipping policy suggests allowing 4–8 weeks of lead time for most orders and scheduling delivery one to two weeks before your installer starts, so there's time to inspect everything and replace a damaged box without holding up the crew. These are general ranges across every line we sell, and stocked lines often move faster than the made-to-order figure. Lead time for your specific line and finish is on your quote; confirm it there rather than relying on a general range. If speed decides the brand, our guide to fast lead time kitchen cabinets by brand compares the lines.

Step 5: Schedule, Receive and Inspect the Delivery

The freight carrier calls 24–48 hours before delivery to set an appointment. Someone 18 or older has to be there to receive and inspect the shipment, and a missed appointment can bring redelivery fees of $150–$400. Standard delivery is curbside: the boxes come off the truck at the curb or the end of the driveway, and moving them inside is on you, so line up help and a hand truck or dolly.

Delivery option Where the boxes end up Typical added cost
Curbside (standard) Curb or end of driveway Included in the shipping quote
Threshold First dry, safe area inside, such as a garage or foyer; not upper floors $100–$300
White glove Room of your choice, unpacked, packaging removed $300–$800, quoted per order

None of these includes assembly or installation. The inspection is where most of the protection in an online order lives:

Infographic of a pallet of cabinet boxes at a curb with six inspection callouts: count boxes, check corners, note on receipt, take photos, never sign clear, unpack within 48 hours
Count and inspect before you sign, write specifics on the receipt, and unpack everything within 48 hours.
  1. Count the boxes against the delivery receipt.
  2. Look at every box for crushed corners, holes and water damage.
  3. Write specifics on the receipt, such as "Box 3 of 15, corner crushed," and have the driver acknowledge it.
  4. Photograph damaged boxes from several angles, plus labels and box numbers.
  5. Never sign "clear" or "no exceptions" if anything is in question. Signing without a note tells the carrier everything arrived in good condition. Our shipping policy also lets you refuse a shipment that arrives severely damaged, visibly water-damaged, or incomplete with no explanation; call us right away if you do.
  6. Unpack and inspect within 48 hours, open every door and drawer, and keep all packaging until any claim is settled. If installation is weeks away, you can reseal the boxes after inspecting.

If something is wrong, call 609-900-3358 right away. We file the claim with the carrier or manufacturer for you, and replacements are expedited once the claim is approved. Our return policy and shipping policy set out the reporting deadlines; report the same day you find a problem and you'll never be close to them.

Store the boxes somewhere clean, dry and climate-controlled, off the floor, and let the cabinets sit in the room for 48 hours before installation. We don't install what we sell, though we can refer installers in many areas. Our cabinet installation cost guide covers the labor side, and if you ordered RTA, how to assemble RTA kitchen cabinets shows the work.

How to Keep the Price Down While You Order

If you want low cost kitchen cabinets online, the biggest savings come from choices made inside the quote, not from hunting for coupons. Ask your designer to price the same layout in two lines; the gap is often larger than any discount. Consider RTA on the lines that offer it. Keep samples to two or three. For a reference point, our Fabuwood Galaxy 10x10 package is $3,500 in the standard Galaxy finishes and $4,200 in oak. Our kitchen cabinet cost estimator gives a cabinets-only budget by quality tier. Contractors get 20–40% off retail through Captivating Pro, and our guide to buying wholesale kitchen cabinets covers trade pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I design kitchen cabinets online for free?

Yes. Send measurements and photos through our design service and you'll get a 3D rendering and itemized quote within 24–48 hours, with no obligation to buy. You keep both either way.

Do I have to use a designer to order cabinets online?

No. If you have plans or know your SKUs, you can build your own order online: add cabinets to the cart and check out. St. Martin and NOMA are the exceptions; they're priced only from a design.

Do I have to be home for cabinet delivery?

Someone 18 or older has to be there. The carrier calls 24–48 hours ahead to set the appointment, and a missed appointment can bring redelivery fees of $150–$400 under our shipping policy.

How much is shipping on a cabinet order?

It depends on order size, weight and destination. Our shipping policy puts typical costs at $200–$800, and the exact figure is itemized before you pay. Alaska and Hawaii are quoted separately.

Can I change or cancel a cabinet order after I pay?

Only before production starts, only if the manufacturer accepts, and with a restocking fee. Call 609-900-3358 the moment you know. Once the order is in production or has shipped, it can't be cancelled, which is why the quote review in step 3 matters.

What if a cabinet arrives damaged?

Note it on the delivery receipt before signing, photograph it, keep the packaging and call us right away. We file the claim with the carrier or manufacturer and expedite the replacement once it's approved.

Can I finance an online cabinet order?

Yes, on eligible orders through Shop Pay Installments at checkout. The plans, any interest and the payment schedule are shown before you confirm.
