Questions to Ask Before Buying Kitchen Cabinets (and the Mistakes They Prevent)

The questions to ask before buying kitchen cabinets are mostly not about style. Once you've picked a door and a color, what's left decides whether the kitchen arrives complete, on time and undamaged: what the quote includes, what the box is made of, who checks the measurements, when it ships, what happens to a crushed carton, and what you can undo after you pay. Ask every seller the same questions and compare the answers.
We're builders who sell cabinets, so we've been on both ends of a bad order. Each question below comes with what a good answer sounds like and our own answer, so you can hold any dealer, including us, to the same standard. Still choosing a style or tier? Start with how to choose kitchen cabinets.
Key Takeaways
- Get the quote itemized by SKU, with every filler, panel, toe kick and molding piece on its own line.
- Ask for the box spec per line, not per brand. Diamond Vibe and Distinction use a furniture-board box as standard; Diamond Edge uses plywood.
- Treat the order as final. Wrong measurements aren't returnable here, and cancelling is only possible before production starts, only if the manufacturer accepts, and with a restocking fee.
- Know the damage routine before the truck comes. Note damage on the receipt before you sign, photograph it, and report visible damage within 5 days.
- Read the warranty, not the badge. Terms at the brands we carry range from a 5-year limited warranty (J&K, Tribeca, KCD) to limited lifetime (US Cabinet Depot, Modernform, and Fabuwood's Allure, Illume, Ovela, Value Premium and Quest series), each with its own conditions.
- Book the installer from the delivery date, not the order date. Allow 4–8 weeks, with delivery 1–2 weeks before install.
Questions About the Quote: What Exactly Is Included?
Two quotes for "the same kitchen" can describe different amounts of material. A cabinet list is only the boxes; a complete kitchen also needs the pieces that close gaps and finish exposed sides.
- Is every item on its own line with a SKU and a price? A good answer is a list you could re-order from: B12, W3030, BF3, with a quantity and a price on each. Our cabinet SKU code guide decodes them.
- Which fillers, end panels, toe kick, scribe and crown are included? A good answer names them by location: a filler at each wall, panels on exposed ends and beside the refrigerator. See our explainer on end panels, scribe molding and fillers.
- Are handles and knobs included? Many quotes, ours included, don't carry decorative hardware. Get a clear yes or no. We don't sell knobs or pulls, so on our orders you buy your own; hinges and drawer slides come with the cabinets.
- Is shipping quoted, and is it curbside? You want a dollar figure before you pay. Ours is quoted up front and itemized; standard delivery is curbside.
- Is that price list or sale? Compare like with like. Our site shows Fabuwood at list less 35%: a painted Galaxy 12-inch base (B12) is $560 list, $364.00 on our site. Holiday banners need the same check; see how to judge a Black Friday cabinet sale.
The mistake it prevents: comparing a bare-box quote to a complete one, then paying a second freight charge for the missing trim. Our fitting-pieces guide puts filler strips at roughly $12–$60 and scribe at $39–$64 a stick: the cheapest lines on a quote and the costliest to forget.
Construction Questions You Can Check on Paper
You can't see inside a cabinet online, but you can get the construction in writing: ask for the manufacturer's spec book (ours are on the spec book page) and ask, for the exact line:
- What is the box made of, standard and upgraded? The good answer names the sides, back and bottom, and says whether plywood is standard or a paid option. "All-wood" isn't an answer; furniture board is a wood product too.
- How are drawer boxes built, and what slides do they ride on? Dovetail, metal-sided or stapled; full or ¾ extension; soft-close or not. See our drawer slides comparison.
- Framed or frameless? It changes door reveals, usable width and which organizers fit.
Here's how the answers differ across lines we sell, from our catalog data:
| Line | Standard box | Drawers | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fabuwood Allure (Galaxy, Luna, Fusion, Nexus) | ½-inch veneered plywood | Soft-close standard | Framed |
| Fabuwood Illume | Engineered furniture board | Blum metal drawer boxes | Frameless |
| Diamond Vibe and Distinction | Furniture board; all-plywood is a paid upgrade | Dovetail | Framed |
| Diamond Edge | Plywood | Dovetail | Framed |
| Decorá | Plywood | Dovetail | Framed |
| US Cabinet Depot framed lines | ½-inch furniture-grade plywood | ⅝-inch solid hardwood dovetail | Framed |
| US Cabinet Depot Palermo and Torino | MDF and furniture-grade plywood, gray melamine inside and out | Metal-sided soft-close (not dovetail) | Frameless |
| KCD Essential | Engineered-wood sides, plywood back | ¾-extension, not soft-close unless upgraded | Framed |
None of these is wrong in itself; our furniture board vs. plywood comparison explains where each earns its place. The point is knowing which one you're paying for. For a hands-on inspection, see how to tell quality kitchen cabinets.
The mistake it prevents: assuming a brand-level claim covers every line.
Finish and Sample Questions
Color is the decision people most often regret. Ask:
- Can I buy a door sample in this exact finish? Ours are $25 for most brands and $35 for St. Martin Vista and NOMA, final sale. There are no St. Martin Heritage samples; a Vista sample in the same finish stands in, since both share one 49-finish program.
- Will panels, fillers and molding come from the same finish run as the doors? Paint and stain lots vary between runs, so a panel added months later can arrive a shade off.
- Is this finish current, or being phased out? It matters if you'll add an island or pantry later.
- Can I get a custom color? Some programs allow it. Fabuwood's framed Allure door styles can be factory-finished in any Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore color; the frameless Illume and Ovela slab lines can't.
The mistake it prevents: picking a white on screen that reads blue or yellow in your light. See our guide to ordering and evaluating cabinet samples.
Sizing, Filler and Appliance Questions
Measurement errors are the costliest mistake here, because at most sellers, us included, they're the buyer's to own. Ask:
- Who checks my measurements against the plan before the order is placed? A good answer: a designer reads your numbers and you sign off on a drawing.
- Which appliance dimensions did you design to? Model numbers from your spec sheets, not "standard sizes."
- Where do fillers go, and how wide are they? A plan with zero fillers assumes perfectly square walls.
Rough measurements start a design; exact ones, taken at three heights on every wall, are what you order from. See how to measure a kitchen for cabinets and kitchen dimensions to know before buying cabinets.
The mistake it prevents: ordering to "see if it fits." Our return policy lists incorrect customer measurements among the things we can't take back.
Lead Time and Assembly Questions
Ask the seller to split the ship date into parts; each runs on its own clock.
- When does the clock start? Ours starts once payment is confirmed and measurements, specs and finishes are final.
- How long is production, and how long is transit? Our policy gives 1–3 business days to process in-stock items, 2–6 weeks for made-to-order cabinets and 4–8 weeks for custom orders, then 7–14 business days in transit to the continental US. Ask for your line's current figure; our lead times by brand guide covers the spread between lines.
- Assembled or flat-packed (RTA)? The answer is per line (table below).
- What happens if the date slips? Under the FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, a seller that can't ship on time has to ask for your consent to the delay, and if you choose not to wait, you can cancel for a full and prompt refund.
| How it ships | Lines we carry | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Assembled only | Fabuwood, Mantra, Diamond, Decorá, St. Martin, NOMA | How many boxes, and will they fit through my door and stairs? |
| RTA only | J&K | Who assembles, and is assembly in the installer's price? |
| Either format | US Cabinet Depot, KCD, Tribeca, Modernform | What does the assembled version add, and does it change the lead time? |
RTA saves money and costs time: our RTA vs. pre-assembled comparison plans on 30–45 minutes for the first cabinet and 15–20 minutes per box after that.
The mistake it prevents: booking the installer from the order date. Our shipping policy recommends allowing 4–8 weeks for most orders and scheduling delivery 1–2 weeks before installation, leaving time to open every box and replace anything damaged before the crew arrives.
Delivery and Damage Questions
Freight damage happens even to well-packed cabinets; what you do in the first ten minutes decides whether it costs a week or a month.
Before delivery day, ask:
- Is it curbside, threshold or inside delivery? Ours is curbside, at the curb or end of the driveway; threshold and white-glove are paid upgrades. Line up help and a hand truck.
- Who needs to be there? An adult, 18 or older, to count and inspect. The carrier calls 24–48 hours ahead; a missed appointment can bring a $150–$400 redelivery fee under our policy.
- Who files the damage claim? It should be "we do." We file with the carrier or manufacturer and ship replacements at no extra cost; our policy gives 2–4 weeks as a typical resolution time.
Then ask for the seller's damage routine in writing. Ours, from our return and shipping policies, is the timeline above: count the boxes, write any damage on the receipt before you sign, photograph it, unpack everything within 48 hours, report visible damage within 5 days of delivery and concealed damage as soon as you find it, and keep all packaging until the claim closes. Our step-by-step on receiving and inspecting a cabinet delivery walks through it at the curb. Whoever you buy from, ask them to confirm their concealed-damage window in writing.
The mistake it prevents: signing a clean delivery receipt over a crushed carton. An unmarked signature says everything arrived in good condition.
Can You Return Kitchen Cabinets? Ask Before You Pay
Usually not, and a seller who says so plainly is doing you a favor. Cabinets are built or packed to your order and can't be resold. Our policy makes every cabinet purchase final, including change of mind, wrong measurements, color variation from website images, and anything opened or installed. Door samples are final sale too; a damaged one is replaced free.
You can sometimes cancel, but only early. Cancellation is possible only before production starts, only if the manufacturer accepts it, and a restocking fee applies; the fees are set out in our return policy, so confirm the figure for your order before you sign.
| Order stage | Can you cancel? | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Quote, not yet paid | Nothing to cancel; nothing is ordered | How long is this quote good for? |
| Paid, before production starts | Possibly, if the manufacturer accepts, less a restocking fee | What is the fee, and on what date does production start? |
| In production | No | Was every line checked before I approved it? |
| Shipped | No; the order is final | What is the delivery window? |
Approved refunds are processed within 5–7 business days of the manufacturer's confirmation, less fees. If we ship the wrong item, we fix it at our cost.
Questions to ask any seller here: Is the order final sale? Until what point can I cancel, what does it cost, and when does production start? If you ship the wrong item, who pays to swap it? You want a written policy page, not a verbal "we'll work with you."
Kitchen Cabinet Warranty Questions
"Lifetime warranty" is a headline; the terms are in the manufacturer's document, and you can read them first: the FTC's guide to federal warranty law says written warranties on consumer products costing more than $15 must be available to consumers before they buy. The same guide explains why almost every cabinet warranty says "limited": a "full" warranty has to meet every one of the federal minimum standards, and if any one isn't met, the warranty is limited.
Read it for five things:
- How long, and for whom? Lifetime often means as long as the original purchaser owns the home. Ask whether it transfers if you sell.
- What's covered? Usually defects in materials and workmanship under normal residential use.
- What's excluded? Common ones: improper installation, water damage, household chemicals, natural wood variation, commercial or rental use. Tribeca's 5-year limited warranty, for example, applies to the original residential purchaser only, excludes rental and commercial properties, and lists warping up to ¼ inch and damage from improper storage among its exclusions.
- Who files the claim? We file them with the manufacturer on the customer's behalf.
- Does the warranty come from the manufacturer or the dealer? A dealer's verbal promise isn't the manufacturer's warranty.
| Brand we carry | Warranty term | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fabuwood | Limited lifetime | Ovela spec book (February 2026): "Only on Allure, Illume, Ovela, Value Premium, and Quest"; first residential purchaser, not transferable |
| US Cabinet Depot | Limited lifetime | Original consumer purchaser, residential use, not transferable (spec book) |
| J&K | 5-year limited | Hinges and drawer glides 1 year (spec book) |
| Tribeca | 5-year limited | Original residential purchaser; excludes rentals |
| KCD | 5-year limited | From the ship date; original owner, residential use, not transferable; improper assembly excluded (KCD warranty) |
| Modernform | Limited lifetime | Cabinets, hinges and glides; after year 1, only while the product stays in Modernform's lineup; single-family owner-occupied homes only, no rentals (Modernform FAQ) |
| Diamond, Decorá, Mantra, St. Martin, NOMA | Ask us | We'll send the manufacturer's current terms before you order |
A 5-year limited warranty isn't a reason to walk away by itself; weigh it against construction and price, as covered in how to choose a kitchen cabinet brand.
The mistake it prevents: finding out after a leak that water damage was never covered, or that the warranty didn't pass to you with the house.
The 10 Most Expensive Kitchen Cabinet Mistakes
The order-stage kitchen cabinet mistakes we see most, what each costs, and the question that heads it off. They're also the errors to avoid when choosing a cabinet maker, manufacturer or dealer: a seller who can't answer the question in the right-hand column is a warning sign. Figures are from our own policies; your seller's may differ.
| Mistake | What it costs | The question that prevents it |
|---|---|---|
| Ordering from your own unchecked measurements | A re-order at full price; measurement errors are final sale | Who checks my numbers against the plan before ordering? |
| Comparing a bare-box quote to a complete one | A second order and freight charge for fillers, panels and scribe | Is every filler, panel and trim piece on its own line? |
| Skipping the door sample | A whole kitchen in the wrong white, and no return | Can I buy a sample in this exact finish? ($25–$35 here) |
| Trusting a brand-level "plywood" claim | A furniture-board box where you expected plywood | What is the box made of in this line, standard and upgraded? |
| Designing to "standard" appliance sizes | An opening that doesn't fit the refrigerator you bought | Which appliance model numbers is this designed to? |
| Leaving exposed ends unpanelled | Raw or unfinished sides on the island and at run ends | Which sides of each run are exposed, and what covers them? |
| Booking the installer from the order date | An idle crew, or cabinets installed before damage is found | What is the confirmed ship date, and when can I inspect? |
| Signing a clean delivery receipt | A damage claim the carrier can deny | What do I write on the receipt, and by when do I report? |
| Missing the delivery appointment | A redelivery fee ($150–$400 under our policy) | Who calls, how far ahead, and what's the window? |
| Changing your mind after production starts | No way out: an order in production can't be cancelled | When exactly does production start on my order? |
None is about picking the "wrong" style. The expensive mistakes happen between quote and install.

Frequently Asked Questions
What questions should I ask a kitchen cabinet dealer?
Ask what the quote includes line by line, the box material in your exact line, who checks measurements, when the lead-time clock starts, how damage claims work, what cancelling costs, and what the warranty excludes. The checklist above covers all twenty.
What is the biggest mistake people make when buying kitchen cabinets?
Ordering from measurements nobody else has checked. Measurement errors are usually final sale, and a re-ordered cabinet costs full price plus another wait. Have a designer read your numbers against a drawing before you pay.
What should I get in writing before ordering cabinets?
The itemized quote by SKU, the box and drawer spec for your exact line, the lead time and when its clock starts, the delivery type and damage-reporting steps, the cancellation terms and fee, and the manufacturer's warranty document. If a seller won't put an answer in writing, treat it as a no.
Is there an industry-standard kitchen cabinet warranty?
There isn't one standard. Among the brands we carry, terms run from a 5-year limited warranty (J&K, Tribeca, KCD) to a limited lifetime warranty (US Cabinet Depot, Modernform, and Fabuwood's Allure, Illume, Ovela, Value Premium and Quest series); for the rest, we send the manufacturer's current document before you order. Read the exclusions and ask whether it transfers.
Is "all-wood" the same as all-plywood?
No. Furniture board is made from wood fiber, so a furniture-board box can be called all-wood. Ask what the sides, back and bottom are made of in the specific line, and whether plywood is standard or an upgrade.
How long before installation should cabinets be delivered?
Our shipping policy recommends delivery 1–2 weeks before the install date. That gives you time to unpack and inspect every box within 48 hours, report damage and get replacements moving before the installer arrives.
What should an itemized cabinet quote include?
Every cabinet by SKU, with quantity and price; every filler, end panel, toe kick, scribe and molding piece; accessories such as roll-outs; the finish and door style; shipping and delivery type; and whether hardware is included. If you can't re-order from it line by line, it isn't itemized.
