Who Makes Which Cabinet Brands: MasterBrand, Cabinetworks and the Independents

If you want to know who makes which cabinet brands, most of the familiar names come from two companies. MasterBrand makes Diamond, Decorá, Mantra, Aristokraft, Omega, Schrock and Thomasville, and since its merger with American Woodmark closed on May 28, 2026, it also owns Woodmark, Shenandoah, Waypoint and Timberlake. Cabinetworks Group makes KraftMaid, Medallion, Merillat, Schuler and Yorktowne. Outside those two are independents such as Fabuwood, Wellborn and Shiloh, plus several dealer-channel lines that aren't in either group's portfolio.
That is the map. What it means for a buyer is less obvious. A shared parent can mean a shared plant, a shared hinge system or shared warranty backing, and it can also mean nothing at all for the cabinet in your kitchen. We sell three MasterBrand lines and several independents, and we don't sell any Cabinetworks or American Woodmark brand. Every ownership fact below links to a source, in most cases the company's own website, so you can check it yourself.
Key Takeaways
- MasterBrand calls itself North America's largest residential cabinet maker. Diamond, Decorá, Mantra, Aristokraft, Omega, Schrock and Thomasville are all its brands.
- On May 28, 2026, American Woodmark merged into MasterBrand. Woodmark (Home Depot), Shenandoah (Lowe's), Waypoint (dealers) and Timberlake (builders) now share a parent with Diamond.
- Cabinetworks Group, the country's largest privately held cabinet maker by its own description, owns KraftMaid, Medallion, Merillat, Schuler and Yorktowne. KraftMaid is not a MasterBrand line.
- Independents include Fabuwood (which bought Plain & Fancy in 2024), Wellborn (family-owned, Alabama) and Shiloh (family-owned, Missouri).
- Two brands with the same parent can still differ on box material, warranty and hardware. Compare the specific line on your quote, not the parent.

The Ownership Map at a Glance
The table covers the brands shoppers ask us about most. "Source" is the page confirming the relationship, the company's own wherever one exists. "We carry" is whether you can buy that brand from us.
| Brand | Parent company | Source | We carry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | MasterBrand | MasterBrand portfolio | Yes (Vibe, Distinction, Edge) |
| Decorá | MasterBrand | MasterBrand portfolio | Yes |
| Mantra | MasterBrand | MasterBrand portfolio | Yes |
| Aristokraft, Omega, Schrock, Homecrest, Kemper, KitchenCraft, StarMark and others | MasterBrand | MasterBrand portfolio | No |
| Thomasville Cabinetry | MasterBrand Cabinets (Home Depot exclusive) | thomasvillecabinetry.com terms of use | No |
| Woodmark, Shenandoah, Waypoint, Timberlake, Hampton Bay | American Woodmark, now part of MasterBrand | American Woodmark brands | No |
| KraftMaid, Medallion, Merillat, Schuler, Yorktowne | Cabinetworks Group | Cabinetworks brands | No |
| Fabuwood | Independent (owns Plain & Fancy) | Fabuwood announcement (Business Wire) | Yes |
| Wellborn | Independent, family-owned | wellborn.com | No |
| Shiloh | W. W. Wood Products, family-owned | shilohcabinetry.com | No |
| St. Martin and NOMA | Not in either group's portfolio | Both portfolio pages above | Yes |
| J&K, US Cabinet Depot, KCD, Tribeca, Modernform | Not in either group's portfolio | Both portfolio pages above | Yes |
A note on the last two rows. "Not in either group's portfolio" is exactly what we can verify: neither MasterBrand's nor Cabinetworks' own brand list includes these names. We don't claim more about their ownership than that. If a brand's corporate structure matters to your decision, ask the manufacturer directly.
MasterBrand: The Largest Group
On its investor site, MasterBrand, Inc. describes itself as "the largest manufacturer of residential cabinets in North America", headquartered in Beachwood, Ohio, and trading on the NYSE as MBC. Its brand portfolio page lists Aristokraft, Decora, Diamond, Homecrest, Kemper, Mantra, Mid Continent, Norcraft, Ultracraft, Urban Effects, Omega, Schrock, KitchenCraft, Fieldstone and StarMark. Each brand has its own one-line positioning there. Aristokraft is "relevant, affordable cabinet styles and finishes," Decora is "made-to-order cabinetry with an exciting focus on color," Mantra is "Cabinets Fast!," and Omega is "modern and casual custom cabinetry."
Thomasville Cabinetry isn't on that page. Its own site describes it as sold exclusively at The Home Depot, and the site's terms of use name MasterBrand Cabinets, LLC as the company behind it, which is why we list it under MasterBrand. Diamond also appears in two forms: the dealer line we sell (Vibe, Distinction and Edge) and a separate Diamond program at Lowe's. They share a name and an owner, but they are separate programs, so don't assume the Lowe's spec matches the dealer line. Our Diamond review covers.
From us, you can buy three MasterBrand brands: Diamond, Decorá and Mantra. That covers the value, semi-custom and premium semi-custom tiers of the group. Our Decorá vs Diamond comparison is a useful way to see how much two siblings can differ, and the Mantra review and Decorá review go line by line.
What the American Woodmark Merger Added
MasterBrand's own press release says the two companies completed their all-stock merger on May 28, 2026. American Woodmark shareholders received 5.150 MasterBrand shares for each share, and the combined company operates as MasterBrand, Inc., based in Beachwood with a continued presence in Winchester, Virginia. American Woodmark's brands page confirms the merger and lists its brands by where they are sold:
| Channel | American Woodmark brands |
|---|---|
| The Home Depot | Woodmark Cabinetry (made to order), Hampton Bay Kitchens (stock), Home Decorators Collection vanities |
| Lowe's | Shenandoah Cabinetry (made to order), allen + roth, Estate storage, stock vanities |
| Independent dealers | Waypoint Living Spaces, PCS Cabinetry |
| Builders (direct) | Timberlake Cabinetry |
| Distributors | 1951 Cabinetry, PCS Cabinetry |
For shoppers, the short-term effect is small. The brands keep their names, spec sheets and price lists, and your quote still names one line whose spec sheet is what you compare. The longer-term questions (shared plants, shared hardware, consolidated catalogs) haven't been answered publicly, and we won't guess. If you're holding a Home Depot quote for Woodmark next to one of ours, our Fabuwood vs Waypoint comparison covers the dealer-channel sibling in detail.
Cabinetworks Group: KraftMaid's Family
The second large group describes itself as "the country's largest privately held kitchen cabinet manufacturer", with 15 brands, nearly 6,000 employees and headquarters in Livonia, Michigan. It was formed in 2020 when ACProducts (acpi) and Masco Cabinetry combined. Masco had owned KraftMaid and Merillat, which is why older articles still say "KraftMaid, a Masco company."
The Cabinetworks brand list includes KraftMaid, Yorktowne, Design-Craft, Medallion, Serenade, Schuler, Smart Cabinetry, Modico, Cardell, MasterCraft, Merillat, Quality Cabinets, Concepts and Masterpiece. Its timeline has some useful dates:
- Yorktowne: founded 1908 as Colonial Cabinets, the oldest name in the group.
- Merillat: founded 1946.
- KraftMaid and Medallion: both founded 1969. KraftMaid was first sold at Home Depot in 1985 and at Lowe's in 1986.
- Schuler: sold exclusively at Lowe's since 2002.
We don't carry any Cabinetworks brand. We compare against them often, though, because a KraftMaid or Medallion quote is often the other number on the table. See Fabuwood vs KraftMaid and Fabuwood vs Merillat for spec-level comparisons.
The Independents
"Independent" here means not owned by either big group. It says nothing about size: Wellborn, for one, describes a 2,000,000-square-foot facility.
Fabuwood
Fabuwood is based in Newark, New Jersey, where it assembles cabinets from components made in the U.S. and overseas. It isn't part of MasterBrand or Cabinetworks, and it has been acquiring rather than being acquired: in September 2024 it announced it had bought Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry of Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, which the announcement says keeps its own name and its fully custom range. So if you're asking who makes Fabuwood, the answer is Fabuwood. It's our largest line, with Allure framed and Illume and Ovela frameless. The Fabuwood pricing guide covers what those cost.
Wellborn
Wellborn Cabinet was founded in 1961 in Ashland, Alabama and is still owned by Paul Wellborn and the Wellborn family. The company says it builds its cabinets there from start to finish, including doors, drawers and face frames, in a 2,000,000-square-foot facility, across six framed and frameless product lines. We don't carry Wellborn.
Shiloh
Shiloh Cabinetry is made by W. W. Wood Products, a family-owned company since 1977 in Dudley, Missouri. The same company also makes the Aspect and Eclipse lines. We don't carry Shiloh.
The dealer-channel lines we carry
Besides Fabuwood and the three MasterBrand lines, we sell St. Martin (Heritage framed inset and Vista frameless, built to order) and its stock program NOMA, plus J&K, US Cabinet Depot, Kitchen Cabinet Distributors, Tribeca and Modernform. None appears on MasterBrand's or Cabinetworks' brand lists. Several publish where they operate. KCD, for example, ships from regional distribution centers in Raleigh, Houston, Reno and Apopka, Florida, and our Tribeca review lists that brand's assembly sites. For how these lines rank against each other, see our brand ratings. This article only maps who owns what.
One name no longer belongs on an active list: Cubitac's maker is in Chapter 7 liquidation, and its brand assets were auctioned in June 2026. Our Cubitac vs Fabuwood article has the details.
The Same Parent in Different Stores
The map is most useful in a big-box store, where names from different parents sit side by side and names from the same parent sit in competing stores. Based on each company's own channel information:
| Where you're shopping | MasterBrand (incl. American Woodmark) | Cabinetworks Group |
|---|---|---|
| The Home Depot | Thomasville; Woodmark; Hampton Bay | KraftMaid |
| Lowe's | Diamond at Lowe's program; Shenandoah; allen + roth | KraftMaid; Schuler |
| Independent dealers | Diamond (Vibe/Distinction/Edge), Decorá, Mantra, Omega, Schrock, Waypoint and others | KraftMaid (incl. dealer-only Vantage tier), Medallion and others |
| Builders | Timberlake; Aristokraft through lumberyards and dealers | Merillat, among others |
Two consequences follow. Since May 2026, the Home Depot shopper choosing between Thomasville and Woodmark is choosing between two brands of the same parent. And the Lowe's shopper weighing Schuler against KraftMaid is looking at two Cabinetworks brands. Neither situation is a problem, but it does mean that choosing a different brand isn't the same as choosing a different company.
What a Shared Parent Actually Shares
Ownership matters most where it shows up in the product. Using the MasterBrand family, which we know best because we sell three of its lines, here is what siblings really have in common, based on each brand's published specs:
- Hardware names. Diamond calls its soft-close Smart Stop and makes it standard across every dealer collection. Aristokraft uses the same Smart Stop name, but there it comes with the Select or All Plywood Construction upgrades. Neither brand's literature we've checked says the parts are identical, so treat it as a shared name, not a proven shared part.
- Towns. Decorá is hand-crafted in Jasper, Indiana, which is also where Aristokraft grew up (the MasterBrand company history traces Aristokraft and Decora to the same Jasper-based business). The premium and entry-level brands share roots, even though they don't share a catalog.
- Construction vocabulary. Diamond Vibe and Distinction and Aristokraft's Standard platform both start on a furniture-board box and sell plywood as an upgrade. Our Fabuwood vs Aristokraft page walks through Aristokraft's three platforms.
- Warranty backing. Diamond and Decorá are both covered by a MasterBrand limited lifetime warranty. The parent company is the one that stands behind the paperwork.
Cabinetworks siblings may overlap in similar ways, but we don't sell those lines and haven't checked their specs side by side, so we won't guess at what they share.
What It Doesn't Share
Siblings are often further apart than people expect. Examples from the MasterBrand family:
| Spec | Diamond (Vibe & Distinction) | Diamond Edge | Mantra | Aristokraft (standard) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parent | MasterBrand | MasterBrand | MasterBrand | MasterBrand |
| Standard box | Furniture board; plywood ends or all-plywood as paid upgrades | Plywood | ½″ plywood ends standard | Furniture board; plywood as an upgrade |
| Soft-close as standard | Yes (Smart Stop) | Yes (Smart Stop) | Yes | No (comes with upgrades) |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime | Limited lifetime | 5-year limited | See brand terms |
Four brands from one parent, and even within one brand the box differs by tier. Mantra's warranty is five years where Diamond's is lifetime, despite the shared owner. So "made by MasterBrand" tells you who stands behind the paperwork, not what the box is made of or how long the coverage lasts. The same goes for channel programs. The Diamond sold at Lowe's is a separate program from the dealer line, and KraftMaid's Vantage tier, the one with all-plywood construction as standard, is sold only through independent dealers. Same brand name, different product.
Across groups, assume nothing carries over. Diamond and KraftMaid get cross-shopped as if they were related, but they come from different companies with different hinges, finishing lines and warranty documents. For the box itself, the row in that table that matters is the standard box, not the parent.
Five Common Mix-Ups
- "KraftMaid is MasterBrand." It isn't. KraftMaid is Cabinetworks Group, built in Middlefield, Ohio. The mistake likely comes from both companies being huge and both being sold at Home Depot and Lowe's.
- "Woodmark and American Woodmark are the same thing." American Woodmark is the company. Woodmark Cabinetry is its made-to-order brand at Home Depot. Since May 2026, the company is part of MasterBrand.
- "Thomasville cabinets are made by the furniture company." Thomasville Cabinetry is sold at Home Depot, and its website's terms of use name MasterBrand Cabinets, LLC.
- "Diamond at Lowe's is the Diamond a dealer sells." Same owner and same name, but a separate program. Compare its spec sheet rather than assuming it matches.
- "Independent means small." Wellborn builds in a 2,000,000-square-foot facility, and Fabuwood now owns a custom brand of its own.
Using Ownership When You Compare Quotes
Ownership is useful background. It shouldn't decide anything on its own. When you have two or three quotes, this is how we suggest using the map:
- Find the exact line, not the brand. "Diamond" could be Vibe, Distinction, Edge or the Lowe's program. "KraftMaid" could be the core line or Vantage. The line name on the quote is what you compare.
- Ask for the box spec in writing. Furniture board or plywood, side thickness, and back thickness. Siblings differ, and so do tiers within a brand.
- Read the warranty for that line. Two brands from one parent can carry very different terms, as Mantra and Diamond show.
- Treat same-parent quotes as one data point. Two MasterBrand quotes are less of a cross-check than one MasterBrand and one independent, because siblings can share hardware names, towns and warranty backing.
- Watch for changes after the merger. If an American Woodmark brand is on your shortlist, ask the seller whether anything about the line's spec, catalog or warranty has changed since May 2026, and get the answer in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who makes Diamond cabinets?
MasterBrand. Diamond appears on MasterBrand's own brand portfolio page. The dealer line (Vibe, Distinction, Edge) is sold through dealers like us, and a separate Diamond program is sold at Lowe's.
Who makes KraftMaid cabinets?
Cabinetworks Group, the privately held company formed in 2020 when ACProducts and Masco Cabinetry combined. KraftMaid was founded in 1969 and is built in Middlefield, Ohio. It is not a MasterBrand brand.
Who makes Fabuwood cabinets?
Fabuwood itself, an independent company in Newark, New Jersey. It isn't owned by MasterBrand or Cabinetworks. In 2024 it bought Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry, which still operates under its own name.
Did MasterBrand buy American Woodmark?
The two completed an all-stock merger on May 28, 2026. The combined company operates as MasterBrand, Inc., and American Woodmark's brands (Woodmark, Shenandoah, Waypoint, Timberlake and others) keep their names.
Are Medallion and KraftMaid the same company?
Same parent, Cabinetworks Group, but separate brands with separate catalogs. Both were founded in 1969, according to Cabinetworks' own timeline.
Are Wellborn and Shiloh owned by a big group?
No. Wellborn is owned by the Wellborn family and built in Ashland, Alabama. Shiloh is made by W. W. Wood Products, family-owned since 1977, in Dudley, Missouri.
Does it matter who owns my cabinet brand?
It matters for warranty backing and sometimes for shared hardware. It doesn't tell you the box material, the door catalog or the warranty length, because those vary between sibling brands and even between tiers of one brand. Compare lines, not parents.
Compare Lines From Different Parents on One Layout
The most useful comparison is one kitchen priced in lines from different parents. We can quote the same plan in a MasterBrand line (Diamond, Decorá or Mantra) and an independent (Fabuwood, St. Martin, or one of our value lines), with the box spec and warranty listed for each. Send your measurements through the free 3D design service. A designer replies within one business day, and the full design and quotes usually follow within 24–48 hours. You can browse every brand we carry first.
Holding a quote from a brand we don't sell? Contact us or call 609-900-3358. We'll tell you who makes it and which of our lines is the closest real comparison.
