Galaxy Cobblestone wall cabinets: when dark uppers earn their place
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Most kitchens built around this finish keep the uppers light, or leave them out. Dark stain above the counter absorbs light at eye level, which is exactly where a room needs it. Galaxy Cobblestone wall cabinets still have jobs they do better than any light cabinet: framing a glass front around a lit interior, making a refrigerator or a black-stainless oven recede, and completing a fully dark kitchen in a room big and bright enough to take one. They come in nine heights from 12″ to 42″ and 12″ deep as standard. This page covers when to hang dark uppers, how to light them, and what they cost.
Dark uppers or light ones: the rooms that can take them
Should upper cabinets be dark or light? It is the first question on this page, and the room answers it. Uppers sit between the window light and your eyes, so a dark upper run changes how bright the kitchen feels far more than dark bases do.
| The room | Our advice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small, one window, 8′ ceiling | Light uppers or open shelves; keep the dark stain below | A dark run at eye level makes a small room feel smaller |
| Medium room, good daylight | Mostly light uppers, with one dark feature: glass fronts, or the hood wall | Gives you the dark accent without closing the room in |
| Large, bright, high ceiling | A fully dark run can work, with lighting planned under and inside it | Enough light and volume to carry a dark wall |
| Open plan, kitchen on one wall | Dark uppers can work well as a furniture-like wall | Seen from a distance, it reads as a single piece |
| Butler’s pantry, bar or coffee wall | Dark, and all of it | Small, separate spaces are where a dark, enclosed feel is the point |
If you are in the first two rows, the light partner for the uppers is covered on the collection page, and the rest of this article covers the dark uppers you might still want.
Glass fronts and lit interiors: the dark frame’s best trick

Glass in a white frame is pleasant. Glass in a dark frame with the light on inside looks like a lit display case. Every Galaxy box has a natural wood veneer interior, so behind a dark stained frame the inside is pale and warm, and it glows against the door. Many dark upper runs are built around that effect, with the remaining uppers solid either side of it.
The glass fronts are listed on the glass doors page: GCB GDW3036 at $234.00 for a 30″ × 36″ upper, GCB GDW1842 at $162.50 for an 18″ × 42″, and diagonal corner versions from GCB GDWDC2430 at $100.75. They are ordered alongside a wall cabinet of the same size, and each one prices well below the solid-door box, so ask your designer exactly what a given line includes (frame, glass or both) before it goes on the order.
Then light the inside. The interior strip, GC LED CAB INT 48" STRIP at $221.00, runs inside the box, and a lit glass bay needs it more than a light-finish kitchen would, because the dark frame means nothing else lights the shelves. The open-shelf and no-door boxes (open shelf from GC WOS1830 at $399.75, no-door wall from GC NDW1530 at $328.25) give the same pale-inside, dark-outside effect with no glass. The glass door guide compares clear, seeded and frosted glass.
Around the fridge and the hood: letting appliances recede
A white cabinet around a black or dark stainless appliance makes the appliance stand out. A dark one lets it recede. That is the second job dark uppers do well, and it works even in a kitchen whose other uppers are light, because the appliance wall can be the one dark wall in the room.
- Refrigerator wall cabinets, 24″ deep so they sit flush with the fridge front: GC W301524 at $351.00 up to GC W362424 at $578.50. Paired with a 12″ × 96″ refrigerator end panel (GC REP1296, $224.25) on each exposed side, the fridge ends up inside a dark frame instead of standing next to a light one.
- Lift-up wall cabinets, GC W421224LU at $689.00 and GC W481224LU at $747.50, for over a wide fridge where a swing door would clash with a tall person or a pendant.
- Microwave wall cabinets: GC MW3018 at $360.75 for a shelf-and-box over the range, and GC MC303021 to MC304221 ($708.50 to $773.50) for a built-in unit. A black microwave front in a dark cabinet disappears almost completely.
- The range wall. Dark uppers either side of a hood frame it as a single composition. On a light run, a hood in this stain does the same job with the dark finish in just one place.
Lighting under a dark run: puck sets, strips and a driver
Under any upper, dark or light, the counter needs its own light. Under a dark one there is an extra benefit: the underside of the cabinet is dark too, so the fixtures are hard to see and you notice only the light on the counter. The lighting program in this finish is sold per cabinet, which makes it easy to cost.
| Part | Code | Price | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puck light set, 30″ cabinet | GC LED W30 | $130.00 | Sized to the cabinet width; sets run 9″ to 39″ |
| Puck light set, 36″ cabinet | GC LED W36 | $146.25 | The two widest sets are $146.25 and $152.75 |
| Single 2-1/4″ puck | GC LED 2-1/4" PUCK | $71.50 | Topping up a set or lighting a single box |
| Interior light strip, 48″ | GC LED CAB INT 48" STRIP | $221.00 | Inside glass-front and open boxes |
| Tunable white strip, 10 mm | GC LED STRIP Tunable White 10MM | $286.00 | Change the colour temperature after installation |
| Driver / power supply | GC LED DRIVER | $204.75 | Powers the run |
| Wireless switch | GC LED WLS SWITCH | $221.00 | Control without cutting a wall box |
The tunable strip deserves a thought on this finish in particular, because bulb colour moves the undertone: warmer light brings out the brown, cooler light brings out the gray. Tunable white lets you decide after installation. Whether a given puck set mounts under the box or inside it, and how many a run needs per driver, is something your designer will set out on the plan. Hide the strips behind a light rail stained to match (GC LRM, $149.50) from the decorative accessories.
Height on a dark wall: the 36-inch box up the ladder
Here is one width, 36″, the widest common double-door wall box, at every height it comes in. A 36″ dark upper is a lot of dark surface, so the lower rungs matter more here than they would in a light finish: a short box over a fridge or a window is often the best way to include the finish on the wall at all.
| Code | Height | Price | Typical use on a dark wall |
|---|---|---|---|
| GC W3612 | 12″ | $253.50 | A shallow band over a tall fridge |
| GC W3615 | 15″ | $263.25 | Over a fridge or a window |
| GC W3618 | 18″ | $273.00 | Over a range hood |
| GC W3621 | 21″ | $305.50 | Over a microwave shelf |
| GC W3624 | 24″ | $354.25 | Stacked over a glass-front box |
| GC W3630 | 30″ | $422.50 | The standard upper on an 8′ ceiling |
| GC W3636 | 36″ | $523.25 | To the ceiling with crown on 8′ |
| GC W3639 | 39″ | $559.00 | An awkward ceiling in between |
| GC W3642 | 42″ | $620.75 | To the ceiling with crown on 9′ |
The biggest jump is from 30″ to 36″, about $101, because the doors get taller and a shelf is added. The step from 36″ to 42″ is about $98. Narrow boxes close out a run the same way: single-door walls from GC W0930 at $208.00, and wall ends from $279.50. Prices are the grid’s displayed figures on the review date; if they have moved, the steps will not have.
Dust on top, and the case for going to the ceiling
This is the maintenance issue specific to dark uppers. Dust settles on the tops of cabinets in every kitchen, but on a pale finish you never see it. On a dark stained box with a gap above it, the top edge shows a gray film from the far side of the room within a week or two.
There are two fixes, and both are about height. Take the uppers to the ceiling with a box height from the ladder above plus crown (GC CM-1 at $117.00 or GC CM-3 at $123.50 per length), so there is no top surface to collect dust. Or leave a generous gap and decide you will wipe the tops monthly. The in-between option, a gap of a few inches, gets the worst of both: a dust shelf you cannot easily reach. A matching wall filler (GC WF330 at $26.00 up to WF642 at $78.00) closes the run to a wall, and the molding guide shows which crown profiles need how much wall above the box.
Corners follow the usual options: diagonal and pie-cut corner walls (GC WDC2430 at $455.00, GC WPC2430 at $542.75) or a blind wall from GC WBC2430 at $354.25. Wine racks from $273.00 break up a run without adding a door. Everything arrives assembled with soft-close hinges. Send the elevation to the design team and the drawing comes back with the lighting shown.
Common questions
- Should upper cabinets be dark or light with dark base cabinets?
- Light in most kitchens. Uppers sit at eye level between the window and you, so dark uppers make a room feel noticeably smaller and dimmer. Dark uppers work in large bright rooms, open-plan kitchens seen from a distance, and small separate spaces like a bar or butler’s pantry, and as glass-front or appliance-wall features.
- What sizes do Fabuwood Cobblestone wall cabinets come in?
- Nine heights (12″, 15″, 18″, 21″, 24″, 30″, 36″, 39″ and 42″) at widths from 9″ to 39″, 12″ deep as standard. Refrigerator and lift-up wall cabinets are 24″ deep. The most-ordered box, GC W3030, is $383.50, the same as the identical box in the Galaxy whites and grays.
- Can you put glass doors on dark shaker cabinets?
- Yes, and it is one of the best uses of this finish. Glass fronts are listed from $97.50 (GCB GDW1530) to $321.75 (GCB GDW3642), ordered with a wall cabinet of the same size; ask your designer what each line covers. The pale veneer interior glows inside the dark frame, especially with an interior strip light (GC LED CAB INT 48" STRIP, $221.00).
- How much do under-cabinet lights cost for these cabinets?
- Puck light sets are sized to the cabinet: $74.75 for a 9″ box, $130.00 for 30″, $146.25 for 36″ and $152.75 for 39″. A driver is $204.75 and a wireless switch $221.00. A tunable white strip at $286.00 lets you shift the colour temperature, which moves this finish between brown and gray.
- Do dark upper cabinets show dust on top?
- Yes. A dark stained top edge shows dust from across the room. Run the uppers to the ceiling with crown so there is no top surface, or leave a gap you can reach and wipe monthly. Avoid a gap of just a few inches; it collects dust you cannot easily reach.
- What wall cabinet goes over a refrigerator?
- A 24″-deep refrigerator wall cabinet, which sits flush with the fridge front: 30″, 33″ or 36″ wide and 12″ to 24″ high, from GC W301524 at $351.00 to GC W362424 at $578.50. Add a 12″ × 96″ refrigerator end panel (GC REP1296, $224.25) on each exposed side to frame the fridge in the dark finish.
