Galaxy Cobblestone hoods: where a dark kitchen can go lighter
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
On every other Galaxy finish, a Timber or Walnut hood is the darker thing on the range wall. The Galaxy Cobblestone hoods turn that around: both wood tones read lighter than this dark gray-brown stain, so the hood becomes the one place a dark kitchen can lift instead of deepen. That, a shell sitting above a burner with the finish on full view, and the light a dark range wall needs are what this page is about. The prices follow.
A wood range hood with dark cabinets: three ways the wall can read
Picture the wall from the doorway. The hood is the largest single object on it, so its tone decides whether the wall reads as one dark mass, as dark with a lighter centre, or as dark with a warm wood centre.
| Shell | Families offered | How the wall reads |
|---|---|---|
| Matched Cobblestone (no suffix) | All five: RHA, RHE, RHS, RHCA, RHF | One continuous dark mass. Dramatic, and the shape of the shell does all the work. |
| Timber | RHE, RHS, RHCA, RHF | A lighter wood centre; the dark uppers frame it like a picture. |
| Walnut | RHS, RHCA | A warmer mid-brown that picks up the brown already in the stain. The quietest contrast. |
Tone is free: wherever Timber or Walnut is offered, it lists at the same price as the matched shell. The matched version is strongest where the cabinets are the whole story — a tall, all-Cobblestone wall under good light. A lighter shell is the better call in a smaller or darker room, where a dark wall with a dark hood can close in. Walnut against this stain is the choice we would reach for when the floor is also mid-brown wood, because the three browns then sit in one family.
Hardware plays into it. Brass and champagne pulls stand out on the dark doors and sit well beside a Walnut shell; black hardware disappears on Cobblestone, which some people want. Pick the shell and the pull finish together.
What cooking does to a dark stained shell

The hood sits closer to heat, steam and grease than any other cabinet in the kitchen, and a dark finish shows those differently. Steam that condenses and dries leaves pale spots. A film of cooking grease dulls the sheen in patches, most visibly on the lower front edge. Flour and spice dust settle on the ledge where a shell steps in. None of it damages the finish if it is cleaned; all of it is more visible than on white.
The routine is the same one that suits the rest of the run: a damp microfiber cloth with a drop of mild dish soap, then a dry cloth, on the lower edge weekly and the whole shell monthly. Keep abrasive pads and degreasers made for stainless off the wood. The grease filter comes with the blower insert and is washable; clean it often, because a clogged one pushes grease out to the edges of the shell. The cabinet care guide goes further on products to avoid.
A lighter Timber or Walnut shell does not remove the task, but it shows pale water spots less than the matched dark one does. For a household that cooks hard every day, that is another quiet point in favor of the lighter shell.
Fabuwood hood prices: every shell, plus what makes it work
The shell is a finished wood housing and moves no air on its own. Add one internal blower — GCB RHBB 250 CFM at $419.25, 400 CFM at $903.50 or 600 CFM at $1,787.50 — and a hood vented outdoors is complete. Any of the three fits every shell, except that the 250 is not offered for the 48″ RHA483021. The GCB RHBB DCT ($263.25), listed as a duct cover, is really a recirculating kit for kitchens that cannot be ducted outside, and GCB RHBB FLTR ($71.50) is its charcoal refill.
- Wall-mount RHA (matched only): 36″ $2,418.00, 42″ $2,502.50, 48″ $2,596.75. The dimensions are in the SKU — RHA363021 is 36″ wide, 30″ high, 21″ deep.
- Chimney RHE (matched, Timber): 30″ $2,609.75, 36″ $2,788.50, 42″ $2,941.25.
- Slim RHS (matched, Timber, Walnut): 30″ $2,785.25, 36″ $2,944.50, 42″ $3,159.00.
- Curved glass RHCA (matched, Timber, Walnut): 36″ $3,532.75, 42″ $3,789.50, 48″ $4,062.50.
- Designer RHF (matched, Timber): 30″ $3,812.25, 36″ $4,043.00, 42″ $4,277.00.
Two sample totals. A 36″ slim shell in Walnut with the 400 CFM blower is $3,848.00. A 48″ curved glass shell in Timber with the 600 CFM blower is $5,850.00. Only RHA and RHCA come at 48″, so a 48″ range settles the family before tone comes into it. Heights and depths for every family except RHA come from the spec sheet; ask your designer, because shell height sets how tall the uppers beside it can be.
Blower size depends on the cooktop, the duct run and whether the house needs make-up air, which is a question for your installer. The range hood CFM guide walks through it.
Lighting a dark range wall
A dark stained wall around the range absorbs light, and the cooktop is where you need the most of it. The live list does not say whether the blower inserts include lights, so confirm that with your designer before counting on them. Either way, light the counter on either side: the uppers flanking a hood are usually 12″ to 18″ wide, too narrow for most bars, and the puck sets GC LED W12, W15 and W18 at $84.50, $91.00 and $97.50 are sized for exactly those boxes, fed by the $204.75 driver.
A pale backsplash does more here than anywhere else in a dark kitchen. It throws light back onto the cooktop, makes a matched dark hood read as a shape rather than a hole, and shows off a lighter wood one. On this wall the backsplash is part of the lighting plan, not only a finish choice.
Finishing parts come from the decorative accessories page: fillers between shell and uppers, crown carried across a matched shell, and skins on any side the hood leaves exposed. A pair of lit glass fronts either side of the hood is the other way to break up a dark range wall. If the range is not chosen yet, a free 3D design can hold the wall open and draw the rest of the kitchen around it, and the full Cobblestone collection has every box that goes beside it.
Common questions
- Should a range hood match dark cabinets or be lighter?
- Both work. A matched Cobblestone shell makes the wall one dark mass, which suits a tall, well-lit wall. A Timber or Walnut shell reads lighter than this stain and lifts the wall, the better call in a smaller or darker room. Tone costs nothing extra.
- Does a walnut hood go with dark gray-brown cabinets?
- Yes. Walnut is a warmer mid-brown that picks up the brown in the Cobblestone stain, so the contrast is quiet. It is offered on the slim RHS (30″, 36″, 42″) and the curved glass RHCA (36″, 42″, 48″), at the same price as the matched shell.
- How do you clean grease off a dark wood range hood?
- A damp microfiber cloth with a drop of mild dish soap, then a dry cloth — the lower front edge weekly, the whole shell monthly. Avoid abrasive pads and stainless degreasers. Wash the grease filter in the blower insert regularly so grease does not reach the edges.
- Is the blower included with the hood?
- No. The shell and blower are separate: 250, 400 or 600 CFM at $419.25, $903.50 or $1,787.50. A vented hood needs nothing else. The $263.25 DCT kit is only for recirculating use, with a $71.50 charcoal refill.
- Is there a 48 inch Cobblestone range hood?
- Two: the wall-mount GCB RHA483021 at $2,596.75 (matched only) and the curved glass GCB RHCA48 at $4,062.50 in matched, Timber or Walnut.
- Do the hood blowers have lights?
- The live list does not say. Ask your designer before counting on them. The narrow uppers either side of a hood take the GC LED W12–W18 puck sets ($84.50–$97.50) to light the counter.
