Twenty-seven inches: the adjustment width

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Twenty-seven is the width people forget is made, which is a shame, because it is the one that rescues a wall. Five SKUs live here and the shelf is genuinely thin: no corner unit, no apron sink, no oven cabinet, no two-drawer or four-drawer bank. What it does have is three inches of cabinet exactly where most runs end up needing three inches of nothing, and the difference between those two things is worth about twenty dollars.

What is here, and what is plainly not

The whole width is B27FD-12D at $429.00, B27FD at $442.00, SB27 at $442.00, B27 at $516.75 and DB27 at $773.50. That is it. If you need a corner box, a farmhouse sink cabinet, an oven cabinet or a pan-only two-drawer bank, this is not the width — those start at 30 and 33.

We would rather say that plainly than dress it up. Twenty-seven is a utility width. It does four ordinary jobs well and does not pretend to do anything else.

Where 27 beats 24 plus a filler

Take a 129-inch sink wall with a dishwasher beside the sink. Three ways to close it, priced from the same board:

Closing a 129-inch wall three ways
PlanThe run, left to rightFillerCabinets
A36 sink base · 24 dishwasher · 24 · 24 · 183 inches$1,868.75
B36 sink base · 24 dishwasher · 27 · 24 · 18none$1,888.25
C36 sink base · 24 dishwasher · 30 · 21 · 18none$1,888.25

Nineteen dollars and fifty cents buys you three inches of real cabinet instead of a dead strip of wood. That is the entire case for this width, and it is a strong one.

The second thing the table shows is worth knowing on every wall you plan: B and C cost exactly the same. The grid is priced close enough to linear that how you divide a run barely moves the number. So divide it for how the kitchen works — door swings, where the drawers should land, which box the bin goes in — and stop optimising the split for money. There is no money in it.

The 27-inch sink base

SB27 at $442.00 is the first sink base most single-bowl kitchen sinks will actually sit in — the 21 and the 24 below it are prep-sink boxes. It is the right answer for a compact kitchen where a 33 or 36-inch sink base would eat the whole wall.

The rule does not change with the width: use the sink maker's published minimum cabinet width, not the bowl dimension. If your sink asks for 27 and the cabinet is 27, you have no tolerance at all and we would go to 30.

The best pan drawer on the board, by the inch

DB27 is $773.50 for three dovetailed drawers, which works out at $28.65 an inch of width. The same bank at fifteen inches costs $41.82 an inch. Because the drawer premium is close to flat regardless of width — you are buying three boxes and three sets of glides either way — the wider you buy drawers, the cheaper each inch of them gets.

A 27-inch three-drawer bank next to a range is one of the better value decisions in a kitchen quote. It holds full-size pans lying flat, it takes the sheet pans a narrow bank cannot, and the drawers come to you instead of you going in after them.

The mistake at this width

Putting the odd size in a symmetrical run. Twenty-seven is the width you use to absorb a remainder, and the place it does that invisibly is at the end of a wall, beside a tall unit, or under a window where the eye is on the glass. Drop it between two 24s in an otherwise regular run of doors and everyone who walks in will see it without knowing why the wall looks off.

Common questions

Do base cabinets come in 27 inches?
Yes, in five configurations: a standard drawer-over-door base, a full-height door box, a shallow 12-inch-deep version, a sink base and a three-drawer bank. Corner units, apron sinks and oven cabinets are not made at this width.
Is a 27-inch sink base big enough?
For most single-bowl sinks, yes — it is the narrowest box we would put a real kitchen sink in. For a 33-inch double bowl, no. Check the sink's stated minimum cabinet width and leave yourself some tolerance.
Should I use filler or order a wider cabinet?
A wider cabinet, when it is available and the run allows. Three inches of filler costs $26.00 and stores nothing; three more inches of cabinet costs about $20 more than the filler plan and gives you usable space.
What is not available in a 27-inch base cabinet?
Corner units of any kind, farmhouse and apron sink bases, base oven and microwave cabinets, and the two- and four-drawer banks. Those live at 30, 33 and 36 inches.
How much does a 27-inch base cabinet cost?
From $429.00 for the shallow full-height-door box to $773.50 for the three-drawer bank, with the standard base at $516.75 and the sink base at $442.00.
