Thirty inches is the appliance width
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Ranges are 30 inches. Hoods are 30 inches. Over-the-range microwaves are 30 inches. So the busiest width in the wall catalog is 30, and it carries more distinct kinds of cabinet — nine — than any other number on the page. Thirty-three units, two of them built at depths that are not 12 inches, and one opening above the range that four different cabinets are competing for.
Nine families at one width
Nothing else on the wall comes close to this spread. Set out plainly:
- Double door wall — W3012 to W3042, nine heights, $234.00 to $526.50
- Refrigerator wall, 24″ deep — W301524 to W302424, four heights, $351.00 to $497.25
- Microwave wall — MW3018 plus the 21″-deep MC family, five units, $360.75 to $773.50
- Blind wall — WBC3030 to WBC3042, four heights, $383.50 to $523.25
- No door, matching interior — NDW3030 to NDW3042, $461.50 to $620.75
- Open shelf, matching interior — WOS3030 to WOS3042, $565.50 to $757.25
- Wine rack — WR3018, $575.25
- Appliance wall — WAC3018, $796.25
- Wall organizer — W0306, $273.00
Two of those need a caveat before you draw them. The appliance wall unit and the wall organizer are configured internally in ways the code alone does not tell you — confirm the door mechanism, the shelf layout and the finished height on the product listing rather than assuming from the SKU.
Four cabinets for the same hole above the range
The most common decision at this width is what goes in the 30 by 18 inch opening above a range. Four different cabinets are built for it, at prices three times apart, and they do genuinely different jobs.
| Unit | Code | Displayed price | What goes in it | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain double door | W3018 | $253.50 | Shelf storage above a chimney hood | Hood flue clearance to the underside |
| Microwave wall | MW3018 | $360.75 | An over-the-range microwave | The appliance spec sheet against the opening |
| Wine rack | WR3018 | $575.25 | Bottles, laid in a lattice, on display | Heat — this is directly above a cooktop |
| Appliance wall | WAC3018 | $796.25 | A small appliance behind a retracting front | The door mechanism and the finished interior depth |
The plain box is the default and usually the right answer over a real chimney hood. The microwave unit is what you want when the appliance is going up there; the taller MC-family cabinets on the microwave wall page — MC303021, MC303621, MC303921 and MC304221, $708.50 to $773.50 — carry a microwave bay inside a full-height 30, 36, 39 or 42 inch box instead.
The two units that break the 12-inch plane
Every other wall cabinet on this site is 12 inches deep. Two families here are not. The refrigerator units are 24 inches deep, so they finish flush with the appliance below rather than sitting a foot back from it. The MC microwave cabinets are 21 inches deep, deep enough to take an appliance with air behind it.
That step is visible from across the room and it needs planning, not discovering. A 24-inch-deep box beside a 12-inch-deep one shows a foot of unfinished side unless you order a panel for it, and the underside of a deep box hangs lower in your sightline than the run either side.
The ordinary thirty, and it is very good value
Under all the speciality, the plain double-door box at this width is the best-value cabinet on the wall after the 36. W3030 is $383.50, about $12.78 for each inch of width, against $23.11 at 9 inches. It carries the full nine-height ladder, 12 through 42, so it also covers the short gaps above a window, a hood or a soffit at 12 inches deep.
The blind unit here is the one to know if your corner has 30 inches to give on one wall — it hides more, reaches less, and still needs its filler. Doorless and open shelf versions run to $757.25, which is a lot of money to look at plates; one is a feature, four is a decision. Contractors ordering the same elevation repeatedly should talk to us through Captivating Pro rather than pricing it a kitchen at a time.
Common questions
- What size cabinet goes above a 30 inch range?
- A 30-inch-wide box, and usually an 18-inch-tall one, which leaves the standard gap above a range hood. Four different 30 × 18 units are made — a plain double door at $253.50, a microwave cabinet, a wine rack and an appliance unit — so the width is settled and the choice is what goes inside.
- How deep is a microwave wall cabinet?
- The MC-family units are 21 inches deep rather than the usual 12, which is what makes room for the appliance. The shallower MW3018 sits in the standard plane, so check its listing against your microwave before assuming it fits.
- How much is a 30 inch wall cabinet?
- The standard double-door boxes display from $234.00 to $526.50 across nine heights. Specialities run higher: microwave units to $773.50 and the appliance cabinet at $796.25.
- Why is the cabinet over the refrigerator deeper?
- A refrigerator is roughly 24 to 30 inches front to back, so a 12-inch-deep upper leaves a wide ledge and a visible gap. The 24-inch-deep units at this width come out flush with the appliance and give you shelves you can actually load.
- What is an appliance garage cabinet?
- A wall unit with a front that retracts or lifts, meant to hide a toaster or a mixer on the counter while keeping it plugged in and reachable. The 30-inch version here is WAC3018 at $796.25; confirm the mechanism and interior clearance on the listing before you commit.
