Brand vs. Brand

Decora vs KraftMaid

Two semi-custom catalogs from two different parent companies — one goes deep on flush-fit doors and furniture detailing, the other goes wide on door count, wood species and made-to-measure sizing.

Decora vs KraftMaid is a question we get from shoppers who have already decided on semi-custom and want to know which catalog fits the kitchen they have drawn. Decorá is MasterBrand’s premium line, hand-crafted in Jasper, Indiana: 73 door styles, 28 of them inset or beaded inset, nearly 200 wood and metal embellishments, and Sherwin-Williams custom color matching. KraftMaid is a Cabinetworks Group brand built in Middlefield, Ohio, with 122 door styles in 14 wood types and modifications to 1/16″. We sell Decorá; we do not carry KraftMaid, and we say where it wins.

Choose Decorá if…

  • The kitchen is flush-fit — 15 inset and 13 beaded inset doors give you a real menu, not one token style
  • Furniture details carry the design: hood surrounds, applied end panels, legs and stacked crown drawn from nearly 200 embellishments
  • You want one door profile to run as overlay on the perimeter and inset on the island without switching families

Choose KraftMaid if…

  • You want the biggest door browser and a stained species Decorá doesn’t list, such as hickory or rustic alder
  • An old house or fixed appliance wall needs boxes sized to 1/16″ rather than closed with fillers
  • You’d like to shop at Home Depot or Lowe’s, or you need a frameless kitchen from the same brand family (Full Access)

Two Semi-Custom Makers, Two Different Parents

Start with a correction, because it shows up in forum threads constantly: KraftMaid is not a MasterBrand line. Its warranty is issued by Cabinetworks Group Michigan LLC, and the cabinets come out of Middlefield, Ohio, where the brand has built since 1969. Decorá belongs to MasterBrand, alongside Diamond and Mantra, and is made in Jasper, Indiana. Same tier, different companies, different catalogs — which is exactly why the comparison is worth making.

Both are semi-custom, meaning each kitchen is built to order from a large catalog with modifications allowed. Where they part ways is the shape of that catalog. Decorá narrows its door list and then goes very deep on how each door can sit in the frame and what can be layered around it. KraftMaid goes broad: more door styles, more wood types, a finer sizing grid and more places to buy. A shopper who asks “which is better” usually gets a more useful answer from “which kind of depth does my drawing need.”

Flush-Fit Doors Are Decorá’s Home Turf

Of Decorá’s 73 doors, 15 are flush inset and 13 are beaded inset, spread across the Harmony, Haskins, Plano, Plaza, Prescott, Simsbury, Thea and Yardley families. That matters beyond the headcount. Prescott, for example, exists as a Classic overlay door, a 5-Piece door, an inset door, an inset 5-piece door and a beaded inset door, so a designer can hold one profile across a whole room and change only the fit — overlay on the long perimeter runs, beaded inset on the island that everyone looks at.

Isometric cross-section diagram of three face-frame cabinets showing partial overlay, full overlay and inset door positions
Partial overlay, full overlay and inset on a face frame — KraftMaid’s pages describe the first two; Decorá’s catalog adds the third.

KraftMaid’s own door-style pages and its Home Depot budgeting guide describe two fits, full overlay and partial overlay, and note that partial overlay saves roughly 10–20% on an identical door. We could not find an inset door group in its current catalog. We don’t sell the brand, so treat that as a question to put to a KraftMaid dealer rather than a final word, but if flush doors are the reason you’re shopping semi-custom, get a written yes on the specific door before you compare prices.

Real inset costs more in any brand — our inset buying guide puts the premium at roughly 15–30% over overlay, because the door has to be hung to a tight, even reveal and kept there. That cost is labor you can see in the finished kitchen, and it is the one category where Decorá’s smaller catalog is actually the deeper one.

Where KraftMaid’s Wider Catalog Pays Off

Credit where it is due. KraftMaid’s door browser lists 122 styles, against Decorá’s 73, and the brand offers doors in 14 wood types including maple, hickory, oak and rustic alder. If the design is a knotty stained kitchen or a hickory cabin look, that species list is a real advantage; Decorá presents its range as a paint and stain deck rather than a published species menu, so confirm the wood under any stain with us before you commit.

Sizing is the second place KraftMaid pulls ahead on paper. Its special-order program modifies width, depth and height in 1/16″ increments, which lets a 22⅜″ gap take a 22⅜″ cabinet. Decorá is semi-custom and does accept modifications, but we don’t publish an increment for it, so ask for the exact change on your quote. For a wall that is simply out of square, both brands will usually get there; for a design built around exact appliance and window dimensions, KraftMaid’s published grid is worth weighing.

KraftMaid also sells a separate frameless program, KraftMaid Full Access, and is stocked through more than 3,500 dealers including Home Depot and Lowe’s. Decorá has no frameless program at all — if the brief turns European and handleless, the conversation moves to a different brand rather than a different Decorá door.

Custom Paint and Embellishments, Compared Honestly

On color, the two programs are closer than their marketing suggests. Decorá matches Sherwin-Williams colors across the catalog. KraftMaid’s ColorMatch™ matches Behr, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams or Valspar colors, finished with three coats of catalyzed enamel, but only when ordered through an independent KraftMaid dealer — a big-box counter can’t place it. If the homeowner has already painted the walls in a Benjamin Moore color, KraftMaid reaches it directly; with Decorá, bring the closest Sherwin-Williams equivalent and approve a sample.

Detailing is where Decorá spends its premium. Nearly 200 wood and metal embellishments — moldings, applied accents, hardware details and finishing pieces — let a hood surround, turned island legs or panelled peninsula ends be drawn and priced inside the order instead of subcontracted to a millwork shop. KraftMaid sells moldings and decorative enhancements too; we haven’t audited that list against Decorá’s count, so compare the specific pieces your drawing calls for rather than the totals.

Both routes add cost one line at a time. Custom color is a modification in either brand, and embellishments are individually priced. Ask for each on its own line so you can see what the look is actually costing.

Boxes, Lead Times and Warranty Terms

Every Decorá cabinet is a plywood box with dovetail drawers and soft-close hinges and glides, whichever of the 73 doors you pick; there is no lower rung where the box gets cheaper. KraftMaid’s FAQ describes case and shelf material as MDF hardwood panels or veneered plywood, with all-plywood construction standard on the dealer-only Vantage line and solid milled lumber in doors, drawer fronts and face frames. If box material matters to you, make sure a KraftMaid quote names plywood before you set it beside a Decorá number.

Timing is similar. Decorá runs 2–6 weeks of production on our product pages plus 7–14 business days of freight, arriving factory-assembled. KraftMaid’s FAQ puts production at about four to six weeks with roughly a week added for delivery. Custom colors and heavy modification can push either one, so get the date in writing.

Both carry a limited lifetime warranty. Decorá’s is backed by MasterBrand. KraftMaid’s covers the original purchaser for as long as they own the cabinets, excludes labor for removal and reinstallation, and drops to a one-year limited warranty for commercial use — worth knowing if the kitchen is in a rental or an office. Read the written terms from whichever dealer you buy through.

Matching the Catalog to Your Drawing

The honest split: pick Decorá when the design is about how doors sit and what surrounds them — inset or beaded inset, one profile carried through mixed fits, and furniture-style detailing specified from a catalog. Pick KraftMaid when the design is about range and precision — a stained species Decorá doesn’t list, a door you found in its 122-style browser, 1/16″ sizing, a frameless program under the same name, or the convenience of a big-box counter.

We sell Decorá and not KraftMaid, so the most useful thing we can offer is the Decorá half of a like-for-like comparison: send your layout to our free 3D design service and we’ll return a rendered plan and itemized Decorá quote, door group and embellishments spelled out line by line. Take the same drawing to a KraftMaid dealer, ask for the same door fit and box material, and you’ll have two numbers that actually answer the question.

FAQ

Decorá vs KraftMaid FAQ

Common questions about how these two compare.

No. Decorá is a MasterBrand Cabinets line, hand-crafted in Jasper, Indiana, and a sibling of Diamond and Mantra. KraftMaid is a Cabinetworks Group brand built in Middlefield, Ohio since 1969; Cabinetworks also owns Merillat and Medallion. The two are often lumped together because both are well-known semi-custom names.

KraftMaid’s door-style and budgeting pages describe full and partial overlay, and we did not find an inset door group in its current catalog. Decorá offers 15 flush inset and 13 beaded inset styles. We don’t carry KraftMaid, so if inset matters, ask a KraftMaid dealer to confirm a specific inset door in writing.

KraftMaid, by count: its door browser lists 122 styles in 14 wood types, against Decorá’s 73. Decorá’s list is organized by fit instead — Classic, 5-Piece, Inset and Beaded Inset — so many of its doors appear in several versions, which is what gives it more flush-fit choices despite the smaller total.

Yes, with different reach. Decorá offers Sherwin-Williams custom color matching. KraftMaid’s ColorMatch™ matches Behr, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams or Valspar colors, but only through independent KraftMaid dealers. In both cases custom color is priced as a modification, so ask for it as its own line on the quote.

They are close. Decorá is built to order in 2–6 weeks of production plus 7–14 business days of freight. KraftMaid’s FAQ quotes about four to six weeks of production plus roughly a week for delivery. Custom colors or heavy modifications can lengthen either, so confirm the date on your order.

No. We sell Decorá and ship it to all 50 states, and we can quote your layout in it with a free 3D design. KraftMaid is sold through its own dealer network, Home Depot and Lowe’s. Our KraftMaid facts come from the manufacturer’s website as of September 2026; confirm current specs with a KraftMaid dealer.
