Forty-two inches: better known as a cabinet height, and what it means as a width

Forty-two is two different questions wearing the same number. Almost everyone who types it means the height — the tall upper that runs to a nine-foot ceiling, or to an eight-foot one with no crown. A much smaller group means the width, and for them the catalog has ten units: one lift-up wall cabinet, three bases, two vanity pieces and four decorative parts. This page answers both, starting with the one you probably want.
Which forty-two do you mean?
Wall cabinets come in heights of 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 30, 36 and 42″, and the 42″ is the one people shop for by name because it takes a run of uppers to the ceiling. Over a 36″ counter with the standard 18″ gap it tops out at 96″ — eight feet exactly, so it needs a nine-foot ceiling to leave any reveal at all.

The only 42″-wide wall cabinet is a lift-up
W421224LU at $689.00 is the whole wall list at this width: a lift-up wall cabinet, listed at 42″ wide, whose door lifts rather than swings. The two figures in the code are its height and depth — confirm which is which on the listing — but the shape is a horizontal box, not a tall one, and it lives above a refrigerator, above a window, or as a bridge over a run where a swinging door would be at head height.
Depth is the useful part: a standard 12″ upper leaves the front half of a fridge uncovered, while a deeper box lets the appliance sit in a proper recess. Its 48″ sibling does the same job on a wider appliance for $747.50.
Three bases, and the widest sink base offered
SB42-1 at $572.00 is the largest sink base the catalog builds. It suits a big single bowl with a drainboard, a workstation sink with accessories, or a double bowl with real separation between the halves — and it leaves cabinet either side of the cutout for the plumbing rather than around it. A caution on all three: 42″ of unbroken shelf is a lot of span. We would not put the heavy end of the kitchen behind a single 42″ pair of doors when two 21″ boxes carry it better for about the same money.
