What a 15-inch pantry cabinet is really for

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

A 15-inch pantry cabinet is the smallest tall box the catalog builds, and it gets bought for two very different reasons: because the wall left exactly that much room, or because someone wanted a pantry and did not want to give up a base run to get one. Both are legitimate. They want different depths.

The job it does well

This is a one-door box, floor to soffit, standing where a full-size pantry will not go: at the end of a run, beside a refrigerator, in the leftover 15 to 17 inches between a doorway and a corner. It buys vertical storage on a footprint smaller than a dishwasher.

The job it is wrong for is replacing a walk-in. A single door this narrow gives you one reach line, and everything lives on a shelf you can see from the front — which is why it works for food and fails for the vacuum, the step stool and the mop at once.

What actually exists at this width

Eight units, all of them single-door pantries: two depths (12" and 24") crossed with four heights (84", 90", 93" and 96"). Displayed prices run from $871.00 for the 84"-tall, 12"-deep box up to $981.50 for the 96"-tall, 24"-deep one. SKUs read TP151284 through TP152496 — width, depth, height, in that order, which is the whole naming system in one string.

There is no drawer, pull-out or glass version at this width. Roll-out trays are separate hardware, sized to the interior opening rather than to the 15" outside dimension.

The planning rule at 15 inches

Tall cabinets are sold on the same 3" grid as everything else, but the tall grid has holes in it: this line offers 15, 18, 24, 30 and 36, with 33 reserved for oven cabinets. There is no 21" and no 27" pantry. A 21" gap is therefore an 18" cabinet plus a 3" filler, and a 27" gap is a 24" cabinet plus a 3" filler — plan the filler as part of the cabinet, not as a leftover.

The other number is swing. A single 15" door opens 15" into the room, and at 84" or more that is a large panel moving in a tight spot. Settle the hinge side against the traffic pattern before you order — and beside a refrigerator, remember the fridge door needs its own arc in the same square of floor.

  • Level the floor first. A 96" box amplifies a 1/4" dip into a visible lean at the top.
  • Scribe to the wall with a finished panel or filler; a tall cabinet shows every wall bow.
  • Anchor into framing at the top rail. Tall units are top-heavy the moment they are loaded.

Where the 15 goes wrong

Buying 15" when the wall had 18". A framed cabinet loses a stile on each side, so at 15" you are planning around roughly 13" of clear shelf — confirm the published opening before buying bins to fit it. Three more inches of box is often the difference between a bin fitting and not.

The second is height. People pick 84" because it sounds standard, then live with a foot of dead air above it. Measure the ceiling, subtract the flooring that has not gone down yet, and buy the tallest unit that fits under it with room for crown.

Common questions

How wide is the inside of a 15 inch pantry cabinet?
Less than 15". The face frame takes a stile on each side, so plan on roughly 13" of clear shelf and confirm the published opening before ordering baskets. The label figure is the outside of the box — the number you measure the wall against.
Is a 15 inch pantry big enough for a family?
For dry food, yes — a 24"-deep unit at 90" or 96" holds a week or two of groceries. As the only storage in the kitchen it is not; treat it as the food cabinet and keep cleaning gear elsewhere.
What is the difference between a 12 inch and 24 inch deep pantry cabinet?
The 12" version lines up with the wall cabinets above and hides nothing. The 24" one lines up with the base run, doubles capacity and takes brooms, but projects a foot further into the room and turns the back of every shelf into storage you forget.
How much does a 15 inch pantry cabinet cost?
From $871.00 to $981.50 displayed. It is the tightest band of any tall width — all eight units land inside about $110.00 of each other.
Can you put pull-out shelves in a 15 inch tall cabinet?
Yes, but as separate hardware sized to the interior opening rather than the 15" outside width. Measure the opening, then buy the tray.
