The hood that lets the colour stay quiet: slim shells in Galaxy Pistachio Green for small and galley kitchens

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Fabuwood’s Signature hood is listed here as the slim shell, in Galaxy Pistachio Green at 30″, 36″ and 42″, in the painted finish, with a Timber accent or with a Walnut accent. Most of the shapes on the hood list are built to be noticed. This one is built for the kitchen where the cabinets are already the statement and the hood should get out of the way — which, in a room painted a colour rather than a neutral, is more kitchens than you might think.

Why a coloured kitchen often wants less hood, not more

In a white or grey kitchen, the hood is often where the interest goes: it is the one place a room of quiet doors gets a shape. A green kitchen has already spent that budget. The colour is the interest, and every large painted form you add increases how much green is in the room at eye level. A tall, broad, decorative hood in the same colour can tip an all-green room from calm to heavy, especially in a small space where the walls are close.

The slim shell reduces the amount of hood without removing it. It still gives the wall a canopy and a line up to the ceiling, but with less painted mass, so the green on the doors does the talking. That is the case for it, and it is a design case rather than a budget one — as the prices below show, it is not the cheapest shape.

Small and galley kitchens: the arithmetic of a short wall

A kitchen wall of upper and tall cabinets in a continuous run
In a galley, the upper run is short and every inch of it is storage. The hood is taken out of that run, so its width matters twice.

In a galley or a small L, the cooking wall is short, and the hood sits in the middle of the upper cabinets you most need. Every inch of hood width is an inch of wall cabinet you do not get. That is why the 30″ matters here: this family lists one, and the plain box does not, so the slim shell is one of the few ways to put a wood hood over a 30″ range without taking 36″ out of a short run.

Whether 30″ is enough is a separate question. A hood the same width as the cooktop is the minimum, and a wider one captures better; on a short wall that trade-off is real, and our dimensions guide covers the clearances either side. For a 30″ electric or induction range that is not used for heavy searing, a 30″ canopy with a sensible blower is a reasonable compromise. For gas and serious cooking, give the hood the extra six inches and find the storage elsewhere — a tall pantry at the end of the galley is often a better trade than a wider upper.

In a galley the opposite wall is close, too. A deep, projecting hood on one side of a narrow corridor can feel like it is leaning over you. The slim profile is kinder to a tight room, though Fabuwood does not publish canopy depth in our listings, so confirm the dimension against your corridor width before ordering.

Nine listings, and a price that surprises people

“Slim” does not mean cheap. At every width the slim shell costs more than the chimney shell: $175.50 more at 30″, $156.00 at 36″ and $217.75 at 42″. Less wood in the air, more money on the invoice — the difference is the design, not the material, and it is worth knowing before a budget assumes the smaller-looking hood is the saving.

With inserts: a 30″ slim with the 250 CFM unit is $3,204.50, a 36″ with the 400 is $3,848.00. The chimney sections on this family are removable and trimmable on site like the chimney shell’s, so ceiling height is handled the same way — trimmed down to fit, never extended.

Timber or Walnut against a grey-sage

Flat lay of a gray-green cabinet door sample with a brass pull, cream quartz, white oak, and handmade tile samples
Choose the accent wood the way you choose the counter: next to the actual door, in the room’s light.

This is one of only two families listed with both wood accents, and the choice between them matters more against a green than against a grey, because green has a temperature of its own. General colour behaviour, not a Fabuwood spec: a darker, warmer wood such as walnut deepens a grey-sage and makes the pairing feel richer and more traditional; a lighter wood reads fresher and more Scandinavian. Our green cabinets guide lists both white oak and walnut among the woods that sit best with this band of greens.

Match the accent to wood already in the room rather than to the cabinets. If the floor is light oak, a walnut hood accent introduces a second wood species at eye level, which can look deliberate or confused depending on how much of each there is. If there is a walnut island or dining table in view, the Walnut accent ties the hood to it. Order a door sample in this finish and ask your designer how to see the accent tones beside it before choosing.

And the painted version is a legitimate choice, not the fallback. In an all-green room with a lot of wood elsewhere, a fully painted slim hood is the quietest option on the whole list — which, for this page, is the point.

The step between the hood and the uppers is correct

A low-profile hood in a continuous run of wall cabinets makes one thing more visible than a bulky one does: its bottom edge does not line up with the bottoms of the cabinets beside it. Standard uppers hang with their bottoms about 54″ off the floor, 18″ above a 36″ counter. The insert guide that matches these blowers puts the bottom of the hood 24″ to 30″ above the cooktop, which lands it at roughly 60″ to 66″ — visibly higher than the cabinets either side.

That step is right. Pulling the hood down to line up with the uppers would put it below the clearance the insert and the range both require, and your range’s manual may ask for more than 24″. On a slim shell the step is more noticeable because the canopy is shallow, so it is worth seeing in the drawing before it surprises you on the wall. The wall and tall cabinet guide explains the 54″ convention.

A small green kitchen: where the light comes from

Small kitchens are where a mid-value colour is most sensitive to the light. The same grey-sage that looks soft and airy in a bright room can look darker and greyer in a galley with one small window. That is general colour behaviour rather than anything specific to this finish, and it is the reason the rest of a small green kitchen is usually kept light: a white or warm-white counter, a pale tile, and under-cabinet lighting that throws light down the doors as well as onto the counter.

The slim hood helps in the same direction, simply by putting less painted surface at eye level. Before ordering anything, tape a door sample to the wall where the hood will go and look at it at night under the lights you will actually use.

A small hood still needs a sensible blower

A narrower canopy has less volume to gather smoke before the blower pulls it away, so on a slim shell it is worth resisting the temptation to economise twice. The 250 CFM insert is fine for light cooking on a 30″ electric range. For gas, or for a 36″ cooktop, the 400 is the usual answer, and it is quieter than the 250 at normal speed by Broan-NuTone’s published ratings — the blower page compares the three in detail.

Common questions

What is the best range hood for a small kitchen?
Usually the smallest hood that still covers the cooktop, with a blower sized to how you cook. In this finish the slim shell at 30″ is one of the few wood hoods listed at that width, and its lower profile suits a narrow galley.
Is a slim range hood cheaper?
No. The slim shell costs more than the chimney shell at every width — $2,785.25 against $2,609.75 at 30″, for example. You pay for the design, not for less wood.
Walnut or Timber accent with a sage green kitchen?
Match the accent to wood already in the room. Walnut deepens a grey-sage and suits a walnut island or dining table; a lighter wood reads fresher. Both cost the same as the painted version; see the accent tone beside a door sample before choosing.
Is 30 inches wide enough for a range hood?
Over a 30″ electric or induction range used for everyday cooking, yes. For gas and heavy cooking a hood wider than the cooktop captures better, so a 36″ over a 30″ range is worth the storage it costs if the wall allows it.
Can the slim hood be trimmed for my ceiling?
Its chimney sections are removable and trimmable on site. Trimming only shortens, so on a tall ceiling check the spec-book dimensions against your measured height before ordering.
Does the slim hood take a smaller blower?
It takes the same three inserts as every other shell: 250, 400 or 600 CFM. The shell shape does not change the blower choice; the cooktop and the way you cook do.
