Choose the bowl and the top first: fitting a basin to a Galaxy Pistachio Green sink base

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Most bathrooms are planned in the wrong order: cabinet first, then a top that fits it, then whatever bowl the top can take. It works better backwards. The Galaxy Pistachio Green vanity sink base is a 34-inch-tall, 21-inch-deep box with doors below and a fixed front across the top where the bowl drops in, and almost everything about how it looks and works — the rim height, the faucet, the overhang, the colour of the surface sitting on it — is set by the bowl and the top you choose. Settle those two first and the width of the box follows.

Four ways a bowl meets the counter

There are four common ways to mount a bathroom bowl, and each asks something different of the cabinet under it.

Undermount

The bowl is fixed under a stone or quartz top with the cut edge polished. Nothing stands above the counter, so you can wipe water straight into the basin, and the rim height is simply the box plus the top. It is the most common choice on a shaker vanity and the easiest to live with. It needs a solid-surface top templated for the bowl.

Drop-in

The bowl sits in a cut-out with its rim resting on the counter. It is cheaper and works with more top materials, but the raised rim catches grime and interrupts the counter line. Fine in a rental or a utility bath.

Vessel

The bowl sits on top of the counter. It makes a statement and it adds height — sometimes a lot. On a comfort-height box, a tall vessel can put the rim higher than many people find comfortable, so it is the option to check with a tape measure before you fall for a photograph.

Integrated top

Bowl and counter are one moulded piece. No seam, easy cleaning, often the budget route. It has to be sized to the cabinet exactly, so order the box first and pick the top to its width and depth.

The rim-height sum on a 34-inch box

The box is 34 inches tall; with a countertop it finishes around 35 to 36 inches, the height the Fabuwood vanity guide calls comfort height. That is taller than the 30 to 32 inches older bathrooms were built at, and most adults find it easier on the back. It also changes the vessel-bowl calculation, because the vessel sits on top of that figure.

Approximate rim height by mounting type on a 34-inch box (illustrative — use your own top and bowl dimensions)

IntegratedThe moulded topAbout 35–36″Holes pre-drilled in the top

The figures are illustrative: top thickness and bowl depth vary by product, and you should add your own. The pattern is what matters. With a comfort-height box, a low-profile vessel is usually the most a household of average-height adults will enjoy; a tall one is a better fit on a lower cabinet or in a powder room where the basin is used for hand-washing only. If children use the bathroom, undermount keeps the rim within their reach longest.

The faucet follows the bowl. A vessel needs either a tall deck faucet or a wall-mounted spout, and a wall-mounted spout has to be plumbed into the wall before tiling at the right height for the bowl you have bought — one more reason to buy the bowl first.

What sits well on a grey-sage box

Sage green inset kitchen cabinets with brass knobs under a cream marble-look top with warm veining, above a wood floor
Inset kitchen cabinets, not this vanity, shown for the pairing: a muted sage under warm-veined stone, with brass and wood. Those are the combinations that work hardest with this family of greens.

This is where the colour decides something on this page. The top is the largest surface sitting directly on the cabinet, and on a greyed sage like this one it can make the green look fresher or turn it murky. The green cabinet guide groups it with the mid-value sages and suggests white or cream quartz, a soapstone look, or marble-look stone with warm veining — and warns off cool mid-grey quartz, which tends to drag a grey-green toward drab.

In a bathroom, three tops come up again and again. Warm-white quartz is the safe choice: it brightens a small room and lets the cabinet colour carry the space. Marble-look stone with soft gold or beige veining adds movement without fighting the green. A wood top — oak or walnut, sealed for a wet room — suits a vessel bowl best, because it avoids having to cut and seal an undermount opening in timber. Whatever you pick, look at a real sample of the top next to a Pistachio door sample under your bathroom bulbs; warm bulbs push greys toward yellow, and the pairing that works in daylight can drift at night. The matching guide covers the wider rules.

Overhang, splash and templating

Bathroom tops usually overhang the front of the cabinet by about an inch. The vanity guide’s advice is the one to follow: install the cabinet first, then template the top on site, so the stone is cut to the room as built rather than the room as drawn. That matters more with an undermount bowl, because the cut-out has to sit on the centre of the cabinet opening, not on a dimension from the drawing.

Decide the backsplash at the same time. A short matching upstand (commonly around four inches) protects the wall; a full-height tiled splash turns the wall behind the bowl into a feature. A side splash is worth adding where the top meets a return wall — water finds its way down that joint otherwise, and it runs straight onto the cabinet side. If the cabinet side is exposed rather than against a wall, it needs a finished panel ordered in this finish; the side panel page lists them.

The bowl column is our planning guidance, not a published spec — the cabinet only cares that the bowl, its clips and the trap fit inside the opening, and the bowl maker’s cut-out template tells you whether it does. Send us the bowl model with your order and we will check it. For a centred bowl with storage on both sides, see the vanity base page for building a three-box run.

What the plumber needs from you before the box arrives

A sink base is the one bathroom cabinet with pipes running through it, and the order of work matters. Before the cabinet is delivered, the plumber needs three things: the bowl model (for the drain position), the faucet model (for the supply height and whether it is wall-mounted), and the finished height of the top. With those, the drain and supplies can be roughed in where they will land inside the box rather than behind a side panel.

The vanity guide notes that comfort-height cabinets meet existing rough-ins fine in most homes, but to confirm if your plumbing is unusually high or the floor is being raised. Measure it now. And if you plan to use the space below the bowl properly, the U-shaped pull-out — GPG UVTCPO-30 BLUM at $646.75, listed as a U-shaped fitting for a 30-inch vanity sink base — is the kind of fitting built to clear the trap, which is what turns the least usable cupboard in the bathroom into storage you can pull out. Its listing is brief, so ask us exactly what it includes and which box it fits before ordering. Everything ships pre-assembled with the rest of the collection in seven days to three weeks.

Common questions

Is a vessel sink too high on a comfort-height vanity?
It can be. The box is 34 inches, the top adds an inch or more, and a vessel sits on top of that. A low-profile vessel usually lands around 38 to 40 inches; a tall one can pass 40. Measure the bowl and try the height against a worktop before you commit.
What countertop goes with a sage green vanity?
Warm-white or cream quartz, marble-look stone with warm veining, or a sealed wood top for a vessel bowl. Avoid cool mid-grey quartz, which tends to make a grey-green look drab. Always compare real samples under your own bathroom lighting.
Should I buy the sink or the cabinet first?
Choose the bowl and faucet first. They set the rim height, the plumbing positions and the cut-out, and the plumber needs them to rough in. Then order the cabinet, install it, and template the top on site.
What sizes does the vanity sink base come in?
21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36 and 42 inches, from $422.50 to $542.75 at review. All are 34 inches tall and 21 inches deep.
Is there a drawer that works under a bathroom sink?
A U-shaped fitting for a 30-inch vanity sink base is listed, GPG UVTCPO-30 BLUM at $646.75; U-shaped fittings are built to clear the trap. Ask us to confirm what it includes. For drawers beside the bowl in one cabinet, look at the sink and drawer combos.
