Parts ordered later: fitting Galaxy Horizon loose parts to a stain that has already lived in your house

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Prices quoted in this article were read off the grid on the review date; the live price grid on this page governs.

Very few people order from this page on the day their kitchen is designed. They order after something has happened: a leak under a sink, a box damaged in a move, a decision to add a cabinet where a gap used to be. So nearly every part listed here is going to sit next to cabinets that were finished months or years earlier. For a painted kitchen that is a minor issue. For a stain like Galaxy Horizon, it is the main thing to plan around, because the new part and the old run will not be the same colour to the last shade. This page explains why, which parts it matters for, and how to order and fit so that the difference is as small as it can be.

What is on this page, and which of it carries the stain

The page holds 273 listings. 183 are carcasses sold without doors, 78 are shelves made to cabinet codes, six are shelf-clip packs, and six are small parts: a touch-up kit, edge banding, bumpers, two packs of hinge restrictor clips and one line called only “PSC”. A carcass carries the normal cabinet code with -BO on the end, so GHZ-B33-BO is the box of a GH B33 base and GHZ-W3030-BO is the box of a GH W3030 wall cabinet. It ships assembled and finished, with its face frame, and with nothing hung on it: no doors, no drawer fronts, no hinges.

Only some of that is stained, and it helps to know which. The face frame of a carcass is in the finish, and so is any side that shows. The inside is not: the catalog spec for this line is a natural wood-veneer interior, so a shelf that lives behind a door is not being compared with the grey-taupe at all. That splits the page neatly. Carcasses, edge banding and the touch-up kit are colour decisions. Shelves, clips, bumpers and restrictor clips are not, and the section on them near the end is short for that reason.

Three reasons a part ordered later will not match exactly

Several cabinet wood species side by side, each with a different grain pattern
Raw wood, not this finish. Every board has its own figure and takes colour its own way, which is the first reason two stained parts from different orders differ.

It is worth being exact about this, because the reasons point to the fixes. When a new stained part goes next to an installed one, three separate things are working against a perfect match.

What separates a new part from an installed run
CauseWhat you seeWhat reduces it
A different finishing runA slight shift in overall tone, lighter or darker, warmer or coolerNothing after the fact. Fabuwood’s spec book says colour variation between stained pieces is normal, so the only fix is ordering together
Different woodGrain that is busier or calmer, and figure that takes the stain more or less deeplyPlacement: the eye compares grain most when two pieces touch
Your cabinets have changedThe installed run is a touch darker, lighter or warmer than the new part, most on the side facing a windowTime and matching light; judge the new part in place after a few weeks, not on the day it arrives

The third cause is the one people do not expect. Fabuwood’s warranty says colours may darken or lighten over time, and that change from UV light, sunlight, smoke or some household cleaners is not a defect. It also says, in so many words, that replacement cabinets may not match display samples or existing cabinets. None of this means the part is wrong. It means a new part is being compared with an old one, and the old one has been living in your light. We have found no reports of this particular stain fading badly; the point is only that some change is normal, and a new piece shows it.

Why a box-only repair is the gentlest fix on a stain

This is where the time gap works in your favour. If a cabinet is damaged but its doors and drawer fronts are fine, buying only the carcass keeps the old fronts. Those fronts have aged with the rest of the kitchen, so they still match their neighbours. The only new stained surface is the face frame, and Galaxy doors are full overlay, which means the doors cover almost all of it. What shows is a thin reveal around each door. A slight difference in a strip that narrow, sitting in the shadow line between two doors, is very hard to see.

Buy the whole cabinet instead and you get new doors too, which are the largest stained surfaces in the kitchen and the ones your eye compares first. So on a stain the carcass is often the better repair and not just the cheaper one. The money matters as well:

Carcass only against the complete cabinet (displayed prices at review)
CabinetCarcassCompleteYou keep
30″ × 30″ wall, W3030$247.00$383.50Both aged doors
33″ base, B33$406.25$633.75Doors and drawer front
36″ drawer base, DB36$659.75$1,030.25All drawer fronts; ask about drawer boxes
36″ vanity combo, VSD36DR$503.75$783.25Door and drawer fronts
24″ vanity wall, WVS2430$315.25$490.75Both aged doors

Three limits before you plan on it. First, the listings do not say whether a drawer-base carcass arrives with its dovetailed drawer boxes, so ask before you order any DB or VDB code. Second, some families have no carcass listing: none of the kitchen sink bases and none of the vanity sink bases has one, and nor do the lazy susans. The farm-sink bases do (FS30, FS33 and FS36). Third, the fronts only move if they are sound. The Blum hinges on these cabinets release from their plates without tools, which is what makes the swap practical, but a split door is a different problem, and fronts are not sold loose here.

Where the new part goes: light, distance and what sits between

When a new stained piece has to go in, three things decide how much anyone will notice it. Touching: a new stile right against an old one invites comparison, while the same piece on the other side of a range, a fridge or a window is judged on its own. Light: strong side light from a window picks out grain and tone differences, and a spot in the shadow under an upper cabinet hides them. Height: eye-level uppers are looked at, while a base below the counter edge mostly is not.

You will not always have a choice, because a replacement goes where the damaged cabinet was. But when you are adding a cabinet, or have two positions that would work, pick the one with something between it and the old run, or the one out of the strongest light. And if you are replacing two cabinets and have fronts to spare from one, the aged fronts are worth keeping for the more visible position.

Give it time before you judge. A new part looks most different on the day it is fitted, in the installer’s work light, beside cabinets you have lived with. After a few weeks in the same room it is being seen in the same light as everything else, and that is the fair test.

The touch-up kit: a marker, a fill stick and a scraper

Fabuwood does not make spray cans for stained finishes. Its spec book says so directly: the finish is too complex to reproduce from a can. What it makes instead is a touch-up kit with three tools, and in this finish it is GHZ-TOUCH-UP-KIT at $62.40. Each tool has one job.

  1. The marker is for light scratches, where the finish is marked and a thin line of lighter wood shows. Draw it along the grain in short, light strokes, wipe off the excess, and build up with a second pass rather than pressing hard on the first.
  2. The fill stick is for dents and deeper nicks, where there is a hollow to fill. Rub it into the hollow until it stands slightly proud of the surface.
  3. The scraper levels the fill flush with the surrounding finish. Then, if the patch looks too plain against the grain around it, a light line or two of marker along the grain ties it in.

Test on the back of a door or the inside of a face frame first, and judge the result in daylight and at night. The kit is for chips, scratches and installer scrapes. It cannot shift the tone of a whole new piece to match an old one, and it should not be used to try: marker across a whole door would look like marker. If a part is visibly the wrong colour, which is different from the normal variation above, send us photographs rather than reaching for the kit.

The best time to buy the kit is with the cabinets, because it will then come from the same finishing period. The second-best time is now. Care matters too: Fabuwood advises blotting spills rather than wiping, mild cleaners only, and never spraying cleaner directly onto the wood. The care guide has the routine.

Edge banding on a cut edge

Fillers, panels and moldings are often cut on site, and every cut leaves a raw edge of core material. On this finish that edge shows as a pale line against the grey-taupe. GHZ-EDGE-BAND at $7.15 is the fix: a strip in the finish, ironed onto the cut edge and trimmed flush. Band the edge before the part is fixed to the wall, not afterwards, and keep the heat off the finished face next to it. A small nick in the banding afterwards is a job for the marker in the touch-up kit.

The parts that get cut most live on the decorative accessories page, and the guide to end panels, scribe and fillers explains which part closes which gap. Order the banding with the parts it is for, so it is in the van when the saw comes out.

Shelves, clips and small hardware: the parts with no colour question

These are ordered by cabinet code and nothing else. A shelf code is AS- plus the cabinet it fits: GHZ-AS-W09 is $14.95 for a 9″ wall, GHZ-AS-VB24 is $48.10 for a 24″ vanity base, GHZ-AS-B24 is $59.15 for a 24″ base, GHZ-AS-B36 is $110.50 for a 36″ base and GHZ-AS-LSB36 is $204.75 for a 36″ lazy susan. Order by code rather than by measuring the old shelf, and check that the cabinet sides are drilled where you want the new shelf to sit.

Clips are 65 cents each, from GHZ-AS-CLIP-1 to a six-pack at $3.90; four hold one shelf. Stem bumpers are 65 cents each. Blum restrictor clips, which stop a door opening into a wall or an appliance, come as a ten-pack of Compact clips at $11.70 or a two-pack for lazy susan doors at $3.90; which one fits depends on the hinge, so ask. The listing called GHZ-PSC, $45.50, gives no description, and we will not guess what it is. Tell us what you are fixing and we will confirm whether it is the part.

Ordering a part for a kitchen that is already installed

Four things let us price and check a part without a visit. The code from the label inside the cabinet. The finish name. Roughly when the kitchen was installed. And a daylight photograph of the cabinet the part will sit beside, taken straight on, with the window side in view if there is one. The install date and the photo tell us how long the old run has been in the light and how hard it is lit, which is the honest way to set expectations before the part arrives.

Loose parts ship in the same two-week window as a Galaxy cabinet order. If a second phase of work is planned, such as a pantry wall next year, the carcasses and cabinets for it are better bought with the first order and stored, for every reason on this page. For the complete cabinets, see the collection page. For a layout with the new cabinets placed where the gap will show least, ask for a free design. Contractors who keep spares for repeat work can order through Captivating Pro, or call (609) 900-3358.

Common questions

Will a replacement cabinet match my existing stained cabinets?
Closely, but not exactly. A new part comes from a different finishing run and different wood, and your installed cabinets have changed in your light. Fabuwood’s spec book calls colour variation normal for stained finishes, and its warranty says replacements may not match existing cabinets. Buying only the carcass and keeping your old doors keeps the difference small.
Why is a carcass-only replacement better on a stained kitchen?
Because your aged doors and drawer fronts stay, and they already match their neighbours. On a full-overlay door the new face frame shows only as a thin reveal. It is cheaper too: a 33″ base box is $406.25 against $633.75 for the complete cabinet.
Can I buy spray paint to touch up stained cabinets?
Not from Fabuwood; it does not make spray cans for stains. Use the touch-up kit, $62.40 in this finish: a marker for light scratches drawn along the grain, a fill stick for dents, and a scraper to level the fill. Test on the back of a door first.
Do stained cabinets change colour in sunlight?
Over time, yes, as all finished wood does. Fabuwood’s warranty says colours may darken or lighten and does not cover colour change from UV or sunlight. The change is gradual and shows mainly when a new part is set beside old ones, which is why placement and ordering together matter.
Which Horizon cabinets are not sold as a carcass only?
The kitchen sink bases, the vanity sink bases and the lazy susans have no carcass listing. The farm-sink bases do. Whether a drawer-base carcass includes its drawer boxes is not stated, so ask before ordering any DB or VDB box.
How do I order a replacement cabinet shelf?
By the cabinet code, not by measuring. The code is AS- plus the cabinet, for example GHZ-AS-B24 at $59.15 for a 24″ base. Clips are 65 cents each and four hold a shelf. Shelves live inside, where the interior is natural wood veneer, so there is no stain match to worry about.
