Galaxy Linen Tall Cabinets

A base cabinet is 34½″ of color under a counter. A wall cabinet is 30″ of it at eye level. A 96-inch beige pantry cabinet is eight feet of it from floor to ceiling, and at 36″ wide that is 24 square feet in one plane — the biggest single expanse of the finish anywhere in the kitchen. A white tower disappears into a white wall. This one does not, and so the first question is where it stands.

The placements that work: at the end of a run beside the refrigerator, so the two tall masses sit together and the beige frames the appliance; or on the wall opposite the windows, where the daylight lands on it and the color glows rather than shadows. The placement that fights the finish is a tall box on the window wall itself, side-lit and in its own shadow, in a room without much light to spare.

Door count matters too. A 36″ double-door pantry is two 18″ doors, each a full-height shaker frame, and the vertical seam between them breaks the plane. Two 18″ single-door pantries side by side do the same with a face frame between them — and cost more, as the next section shows.

Here is the pantry range read as a set of steps. Each row changes one dimension and holds the other two; Linen is quoted on request, so the last column is the size of the step, not a price.

Read down the last column. Doubling the depth of a pantry barely moves the quote — it adds a wider side panel and a deeper shelf and nothing else. Adding a foot of height on a narrow tower adds about a tenth; on a wide one, more, because the doors grow with it. Every step up in width is the big one, because width is where the doors, the shelves and the frame all get bigger together. The odd rows in Fabuwood’s list — a 93″ height that is sometimes priced above the 96″ — are catalog quirks. Linen is quoted on request, so the steps between rows are the part worth remembering.

The consequence for single door vs double door: two 18″ towers against one 36″ two-door is GL TP181284 twice against one GL TP361284. The pair costs about 22% more and gives you two face frames, four hinges and two separate interiors. Sometimes that is exactly right — one for food, one for brooms — but it is not the cheaper way to fill 36″ of wall.

Because depth is nearly free, it should be decided entirely on what goes inside. A 24″-deep pantry stands flush with the base run and holds about twice as much, but anything behind the front row is out of sight until you add roll-outs. A 12″-deep pantry holds one row of cans and jars and shows you every one of them. For everyday food, the shallow tower is usually the more useful cabinet; for small appliances, bulk and brooms, the deep one is the only cabinet.

Two layout consequences follow. A 24″-deep tower stands flush with the base run, so the toe kick continues under it without a step — order the toe kick length to include the tower. A 12″-deep tower beside 24″ bases leaves a 12″ step in the run, and that step shows the tower’s side; in a beige finish that exposed side wants a matching tall side panel or it reads as a raw edge in the most visible spot in the kitchen.

If you go deep, decide the roll-outs at the same time. Fitting pull-out shelving after a loaded 96″ tower is standing in place means drilling into it, and the roll-out drawers and pull-outs are sized to the cabinet width you order. The oven cabinets are all 33″ wide and 24″ deep, at 84″, 90″, 93″ and 96″ high, with the letter at the end telling you the cutout. Single oven (GL OC3384S at 84″) has one appliance opening with storage above and below. Double oven (GL OC3384D) has two stacked openings. Combo oven (GL OC3384C) has an oven opening with a microwave or warming-drawer opening above. Going from 84″ to 96″ adds roughly a tenth in each of the three families, and the single is, oddly, the most expensive of the three at every height — the list is the list.

Each cutout is cut for one specific appliance, so the model number comes before the cabinet order; a late change of oven is a different cabinet, not a trim adjustment. The same is true of the base alternative: GL BOC30, a 30″ base oven cabinet for a single oven under a cooktop, and the base microwave cabinets GL BMC24 and GL BMC30 for a drawer-style or under-counter unit. In a beige kitchen the base route has one merit the tower does not: it keeps a stainless appliance low, out of the eye-level band where the color is judged.

Four heights, three ceilings. On an 8′ ceiling, 84″ leaves a foot of gap above the tower; 90″ leaves six inches and lines up with 36″ uppers; 96″ meets the ceiling with nothing to dust. A 93″ tower is in the list for ceilings that will not quite take 96″ with crown on top — confirm the exact opening before choosing it. On a 9′ ceiling, 96″ with crown is the usual answer and the tower lines up with 42″ uppers.

Whatever the height, the tower and the wall cabinets beside it should share a top line. In a beige this matters a little more than in a white, because a tower that stands proud of the uppers by a couple of inches is a step in the largest plane of color in the room, and the eye goes straight to it. Crown and the tall filler that closes the tower to a wall are both painted to match and both are ordered against the tower height.

A pre-assembled tall cabinet is also the heaviest carton on the truck, and the one that has to make the turn into the kitchen in one piece. Measure the door, the hall and the corner; then plan for the tower to be set plumb and fixed to studs before anything goes in it, because a loaded 96″ box is not something you adjust afterwards.
