Galaxy Linen Base Cabinets

Every kitchen has a clean zone at the sink, a cook zone at the range, a prep-and-storage stretch between them, at least one corner, and two ends where the run meets a wall or an appliance. Each wants a different family of cabinet, and the fastest route to a good run is to assign the family to the zone first and pick widths second; the widths step in 3″ increments, so the second decision is easy once the first is made.

Notice that the door base appears in only two zones, and in one of them only because a pull-out needs a door to hide behind. In a kitchen that is drawn well, most of the run is drawers, and the double-door bases at 24″ and wider are what you buy where a drawer bank would cost more than the zone deserves.

The number that decides most of a base run is the premium a three-drawer bank carries over a door base of the same width. It is not a flat amount. It shrinks as the box gets wider, because a set of Blum Tandem glides and a dovetailed drawer box cost roughly the same whether the drawer is 12″ or 36″ across. So the premium is steepest exactly where a drawer bank is least useful — a 12″ drawer is a spice rack — and settles at about half again from 24″ up, where the drawers are big enough for pans and plates. The 36″ width most shoppers search for by name is the clearest case — GL B36 at $676.00 against GL DB36 at $1,030.25 — and the bank is the better cabinet in a prep zone. So: spend on drawers at 24″ to 36″ between sink and range, use the 15″ and 18″ four-drawer banks beside the cooktop where their shallow tiers earn the money, and let narrow single-door boxes close out the ends. Every dollar figure on this page is the discounted number the grid showed at review; the grid is the price of record, and if it has moved the ratios will not have.

Size the sink base from the sink, not from the run, and choose the sink before the cabinet order goes in — a late change here is a new cabinet, not a trim. The working rule is a cabinet about 3″ wider than the sink’s outside dimension, because the face-frame stiles and clips take that space: a 33″ sink goes in a 36″ sink base, a 30″ sink in a 33″. Standard sink bases run 21″ to 42″ in 3″ steps (GL SB21 at $386.75 up to GL SB42 at $572.00), and the 33″ and 36″ widths also come with one false front across the top — GL SB33SDF and GL SB36SDF, at the same price as the two-front version. The single front is a styling call: one uninterrupted rail on the most-looked-at door in the kitchen.

An apron-front sink needs a farm sink base — GL FS30, FS33 or FS36, all between $806.00 and $825.50 — with the front cut down for the apron and the sink’s drawing confirming the width. A corner sink needs the diagonal sink base, GL DSB36 at $617.50, with a matching diagonal front and floor sold separately for a site-built alternative.

The color detail in this zone is the dishwasher: a white or stainless unit between two beige boxes is a hard break in the run, at the spot people stand most. If the machine is panel-ready, a matching door panel from the trim and panel range makes the run continuous; if not, accept the break and match the widths on either side of it so it sits symmetrically.

Every L and U has at least one base corner, and four cabinets can occupy it. Each buys a different amount of reachable storage for a different footprint on the two walls, and the question people type into a search box — Susan or blind — is really a question about what the corner will hold.

The pattern to read off that table: the blind corner is the cheapest by several hundred dollars, and the difference buys back the third of the cabinet you cannot reach. If the corner holds anything used weekly, the Susan pays for itself in not kneeling. If it holds the roasting pan and the stock pot, the blind box is fine and the money is better spent on a drawer bank in the prep zone.

The counter touches every base in the run, which makes it the base page’s color question. Shoppers arrive here calling this finish a cream shaker or an off-white, and from across a bright room that is fair; up close, against white trim or white quartz, it reads as what it is — a warm beige with a touch of greige. That undertone chooses the counter. Cream quartz, butcher block, travertine and stone with beige movement hand the warmth back up; a cool gray slab takes it away, and is the usual reason the finish gets called muddy.

A run has to land on a wall, turn a corner into a peninsula, or stop against an appliance, and the pieces that do that are the ones nobody draws first and everybody needs. The narrow single-door bases (GL B12 $364.00, B15 $377.00, B18 $409.50, B21 $432.25) close out a run so the final box and a small filler meet the wall length. The 9″ width exists only as a full-height door, GL B09FD at $273.00, for the last few inches beside a range or a fridge.

If you searched for 12 inch deep base cabinets, this is where they live. The full-height door bases run the whole width range as single and double-door versions, GL B09FD through GL B39FD, and the same codes with a -12D suffix are the shallow boxes — GL B12FD-12D at $321.75 through GL B36FD-12D at $477.75 — for the back side of a peninsula, a desk return, or a run down an aisle that cannot spare 24″. Dropping the top drawer saves $33 to $36 at the single-door widths and more on the wide two-door boxes, so specify FD for what goes inside, not for the saving.

Where a run turns, the return angle and transition pieces handle it — GL BTR12 and BTL12 ($419.25, handed) step the run back, GL BRA24 ($588.25) turns it — and where it becomes a window seat, the drawer bench seats (GL DBS24 to DBS36, $338.00 to $425.75) are the low drawer cabinets built for it. The color note here is exposed sides. Any base that ends beside a white or stainless appliance, or at the open end of a peninsula, shows its side, and a side panel in the same beige keeps that side in the door’s warm tone rather than raw veneer.
