Thirty-nine inches is a common height and a rare width — telling the two apart

There are two thirty-nines in this catalog and they are nowhere near the same size of thing. One is a height — the third rung of the standard wall ladder, available in almost every width, with glazed fronts, fillers, skins and pilasters cut to match it. The other is a width, and it is one of the thinnest sections of the whole collection: eight boxes, four departments empty, one accessory. Work out which one you are after before you read any further.
As a height, it is everywhere
Wall cabinets come 30, 36, 39 and 42 inches tall. The 39-inch rung exists for the ceiling that is not quite nine feet: it takes the run higher than a 36 without the 42-inch box that can crowd an eight-foot room. Almost every wall width offers it — from the 9-inch box at $256.75 through the 30-inch at $503.75 to the 39-inch at $633.75.
The supporting parts are cut for it too, which is the real signal that the height is a standard rather than a special. A glazed front at this height is $107.25 to $146.25 depending on the box; a wall filler is $71.50; a 3-inch overlay filler $87.75 and the 6-inch $156.00; the end skin $50.05 and the pilaster $224.25. None of that exists for a height the factory treats as an exception.
As a width, it is eight boxes
Four bases and four wall units. That is the entire list, and every one of them is a run-ender or a corner.

GN W3939 is the one box that is both thirty-nines at once — 39 inches wide and 39 inches tall, at $633.75. It is a useful thing to say out loud on the phone, because a code with the number twice is the one most often written down wrong.
Three ways to cover thirty-nine inches of wall
Since so little is built here, the practical question is whether to use the width at all. Three options, all priced from the base list:
- One 39-inch box. GN B39FD at $526.50, or GN B39 at $718.25 if you want the drawer across the top. One cabinet, one continuous door line, no joints.
- A 36-inch box and a filler. GN B36FD at $490.75 plus GN BF3, the 3-inch base filler, at $26.00 — $516.75 all in, and $9.75 cheaper than the single. You gain nothing in storage and you add a visible strip.
- Two boxes. GN B24FD at $403.00 beside GN B15FD at $341.25 comes to $744.25, or a 21 and an 18 to $773.50. Both cost more than the single and hold less, because you have bought a second face and a second set of sides.
The single box wins on storage every time and on price against the split. The filler route only makes sense when the run needs clearance rather than storage — beside a range, against a door casing, or at an inside corner where two doors would otherwise foul each other.

- Thirty, 36, 39 and 42 inches, all of them 12 inches deep. The 39-inch height suits a ceiling between eight and nine feet, where a 42 would sit too close and a 36 leaves an awkward gap.
