Repair or replace? The arithmetic behind every Galaxy Nickel loose part

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Every enquiry that reaches us from this page is the same question wearing different clothes. A forklift put a corner through a wall box. A dishwasher hose let go under a base. A mover’s strap did not miss a door. Each time, the customer wants to know whether it is cheaper to fix the cabinet or replace it — and that is arithmetic rather than judgment, because the answer sits in one ratio that barely moves across 183 carcass listings. So we work the ratio out first, then spend the rest of the page on the decisions it settles.

The one number: a box without doors is 64 cents of every cabinet dollar

Exploded diagram of a base cabinet labelling the expected service life of the box, door, finish, drawer box, hinges and slides
The box outlasts the door, the finish and the hardware — and it is also the two-thirds of the price. That is the whole repair question in one picture.

This page holds 273 line items: 183 cabinets sold as bare boxes, 78 shelves cut to cabinet codes, and a dozen small parts. The boxes carry the ordinary cabinet code with -BO on the end — a GNK-W2430-BO is the box of a GN W2430 wall, a GNK-B33-BO the box of a GN B33 base. What ships is assembled and finished, not flat: the ½″ solid wood carcass with its natural wood-veneer interior and face frame, and nothing at all hung on the front.

We priced all 183 of them against their complete cabinets. 168 have a direct counterpart on the grid, and the spread is remarkably tight: the median bare box is 64.3 per cent of the finished cabinet, and 160 of those 168 land between 63.5 and 65 per cent. Not a rule of thumb — a measured constant. Doors, hinges, drawer fronts, glides and the labour to hang them are roughly the last third of what a cabinet costs. Everything else is box.

FS33 33″ farm-sink base$572.00$815.75$243.7570%

Read the last row as the exception. On the farm-sink codes the box takes about 70 per cent rather than 64, so a box swap recovers less. The listings do not explain why and we will not invent a reason; check the pair before assuming the usual third. The cheapest box on the page is a GNK-W1215-BO at $110.50; the dearest is a GNK-VSD60SINGLE-BO vanity combo at $767.00.

Damaged box, good doors: the swap that recovers a third of the cabinet

This is the case the bare listings exist for, and the common one: a racked side, a split back, a bottom swollen by a slow leak, while the fronts came through untouched. The fronts move. Blum Compact Clip hinges are Quick-Release, so a door lifts off its mounting plate without a screwdriver, and a drawer front unclips from the Tandem glides the same way. Both go onto the new carcass, and you have paid for the broken half only.

On a 33″ base that is $406.25 instead of $633.75 — $227.50 kept; on a 36″ drawer base, $370.50. The rule that follows: if the fronts survived, buy the box. Now the three limits, because each of them cost somebody money last year.

  1. The listing means what it says. No doors, no drawer fronts, no hardware — hinges, mounting plates, glides and pulls are not in the carton. Whether the dovetailed drawer boxes ship with a drawer-base carcass is not stated anywhere we can point to, and we will not guess: ask before committing to any DB or VDB code, because a bank without boxes is a very different repair from a bank without fronts.
  2. Whole families have no bare listing at all. There is no carcass for any sink base from SB21 to SB42, none for the lazy susans, none for the pantries and oven cabinets, none for the 12″-deep bases, the base return angle or the diagonal sink base — and, easy to miss, none for any 39″-high wall. A W3639 or a WDC2439 is a whole-cabinet replacement however clean its doors are. Send the code before planning around a box that does not exist.
  3. If the door is what got hurt, a box is money spent on the wrong half. That case has its own section below, and the answer is not on this page.

One oddity that saves a call: a cabinet can have no carcass listing and still have a shelf. The base return angle is the clean example — no BRA24 box, but GNK-AS-BRA24 at $64.35 will replace its shelf. Parts availability is listing by listing, not family by family.

Damaged door, good box: the honest answer

Turn the ratio around and it stops being friendly. Doors and drawer fronts are not sold loose here, and neither are hinges or glides. The fronts are the missing third, and you cannot buy that third from the grid.

What we do instead is send the cabinet code and a photograph to the dealer channel and price a replacement front there. Usually it beats a whole cabinet — but it is quoted, not listed, and it takes a few days to come back. Plan the run around a temporary gap, not around a date nobody has given you.

Two things change the answer. If the door failed on its own in service — a joint opening, a panel splitting — that is a limited lifetime warranty conversation before it is a purchase, and it costs nothing to start. Transit damage is a delivery claim, which means photographing the carton and label the day the pallet lands, not the day the installer opens it. Neither is a reason to buy a box.

Shelves are priced by the cabinet they live in, and the packs do not discount

Order a replacement shelf by cabinet code, never by measuring the old one. The code is AS- plus the family and width, so GNK-AS-W30 fits any 30″ standard-depth wall and GNK-AS-B36 a 36″ base. Deep walls, corners, angled ends and lazy susans each carry their own part, finished on the visible faces and banded on the front edge so a replacement does not read as a patch. Price tracks area, and the range is wider than people expect.

GNK-AS-B2424″ base$59.15
GNK-AS-B3636″ base$110.50

Then the trap. Many shelves also list as two- and three-packs with a -2 or -3 suffix, and the packs do not discount — in places they cost more per shelf than singles. Three 18″ wall shelves bought as GNK-AS-W18-3 run $94.25, which is $31.42 each against $29.25 for GNK-AS-W18 on its own. A two-pack of the 30″ wall shelf is $97.50, or $48.75 each, against $45.50. Order the count you need; a pack buys you one line on the order and nothing else.

Clips are a separate line, priced linearly at 65 cents each, from GNK-AS-CLIP-1 to GNK-AS-CLIP-6 at $3.90. Four carry one shelf, so $2.60 restores a shelf and the six-pack leaves two spares. And before ordering an extra level rather than a replacement, look inside: a shelf only sits where the side was drilled for it.

The parts that cost less than one callback

The dozen small items on this page never win a comparison against a cabinet, because they are not competing with a cabinet. They compete with a return visit. Price a kitchen’s worth together: a touch-up kit at $62.40, a coil of edge banding at $7.15, a six-pack of shelf clips at $3.90, twenty stem bumpers at $13.00 and a ten-pack of Blum Compact restrictor clips at $11.70 — $98.15.

That is less than GNK-W1215-BO at $110.50 — the smallest box on the page — and under three per cent of a 10x10 kitchen at $3,500.00. Against one trip back across town to hide a scuff, seal a raw edge or stop a door swinging into a refrigerator handle, it is barely a purchase. Restrictor clips come in two forms — that ten-pack and GNK-BLUM-LSB-RES-CLIP-2PK at $3.90 — and which one fits depends on the hinge on your doors, so we confirm that rather than letting you guess.

One more item sits on the page with almost no description: GNK-PSC at $45.50. The listing gives the code and nothing else, so we will not tell you what is in it; describe what you are fixing and we will confirm whether it is the part. Anyone running one plan through a building should put the whole kit on the cabinet order rather than buying it twice — Captivating Pro exists for standing orders of exactly this shape.

Why a mid-tone grey cannot be matched at a paint counter

Six grey cabinet door shades arranged from light to near-black, each labelled with its depth
A depth ladder rather than an undertone chart — but the step from the second door to the third is mostly a change of colour, not of lightness. That is how a mis-mixed touch-up fails.

Touching up a white door is a brightness problem: get the value slightly wrong and the patch reads as a bright speck, annoying but legible as a repair. Grey fails differently in kind, not degree. At this depth the eye stops reading a mismatch as lighter-or-darker and starts reading it as a different colour, so a counter-mixed near-miss does not come back grey — it comes back faintly blue, faintly green, or a muddy brown that looks like dirt on the door. Anyone who has watched a “greige” sample dry out green knows the feeling.

So the factory kit at $62.40 is not a convenience here; it is the only option we will stand behind, because it is matched to the finish as sprayed. Treat it as chip-and-scuff repair — a nicked edge, an installer’s scrape. A door that needs more than that needs a door.

Lighting decides whether the repair passes, and here the advice inverts what the white-finish pages say. Let the patch cure, then judge it under the permanent fixtures, standing where people stand. Very warm 2700K bulbs flatten a mid-tone grey and dull the whole run, which hides a good patch and flatters a bad one; at 3000 to 4000K the finish holds its neutral and the truth shows. If the kitchen is still on paper, a $25.00 door sample under your own bulbs is the cheapest experiment on this list, and the shade guide explains what you are looking at.

The banding argument is the same one in a different place. Every filler, scribe and end panel trimmed on site leaves raw core along the cut, and the reflex is a white or woodgrain iron-on strip from the hardware aisle. On a grey run that strip is not a near-miss but a different colour entirely, at eye level, on the edge a visitor meets first. GNK-EDGE-BAND at $7.15 is coloured to the finish. Order the coil with the cabinets.

Boxes under your own doors: what the face frame decides for you

A mid-tone grey five-piece shaker door and drawer front in the Fabuwood Allure Galaxy line
The factory front, in the finish. Buy the box alone and this is the colour your own door gets held against.

The other steady buyer of bare boxes is the shop that makes its own fronts. The proposition is good: a pre-assembled, factory-finished ½″ solid wood carcass inside the KCMA-certified line and its warranty, at about two-thirds of the cabinet — GNK-B33-BO at $406.25, GNK-DB36-BO at $659.75, the 48″ lift-up GNK-W481224LU-BO at $481.00. You supply doors, fronts, hinges and glides — and settle the drawer-box question before cutting anything.

What comes with it is a commitment, easy to miss because these are full-overlay cabinets. Full overlay is not no overlay: a line of face frame shows around every door and drawer front, and on this finish that line is grey. Whatever you hang gets read against it in every photograph of the room.

So the near-grey front is the expensive mistake. A greige slab from another shop, a warm grey stain, or — the classic accident — a soft blue-grey like Horizon ordered as though it were a neutral: each puts two greys within a whisker of one another, and the eye does not read a whisker as a design choice. It reads a mistake nobody caught. Real distance reads as intended. Matte black, a natural white oak, a clean white, or the charcoal weight of Cobblestone — each makes the grey reveal look like a deliberate frame rather than a failed match.

If the front is going to be any kind of grey, order the complete cabinet and let the factory match it. Whatever the job, three things price it without a site visit: the code from the label inside the cabinet, a photograph, and the finish name. Send those and the arithmetic takes ten minutes.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to repair a kitchen cabinet or replace it?
It depends which half broke. A bare carcass costs about 64 per cent of the complete cabinet across the grid — a 33″ base is $406.25 as a box against $633.75 finished — so if the doors survived, buying the box saves roughly a third. If the doors are what broke, the box is the wrong purchase, because fronts are not sold loose on this page.
How much does a cabinet box without doors cost?
From $110.50 for a 12″ × 15″ wall box to $767.00 for a 60″ vanity combo, with 183 codes in between. The consistent figure is the ratio rather than the dollar: of the 168 boxes with a direct counterpart, 160 price between 63.5 and 65 per cent of the complete cabinet.
Which cabinets cannot be bought as a box only?
Sink bases from SB21 to SB42, the lazy susans, the pantries and oven cabinets, the 12″-deep bases, the base return angle, the diagonal sink base, and every 39″-high wall including the corner and blind versions. Those are whole-cabinet replacements. Send the code and we will confirm before you plan around it.
Do multi-packs of cabinet shelves cost less than buying singles?
No, and sometimes they cost more. A three-pack of the 18″ wall shelf is $94.25, or $31.42 a shelf, against $29.25 each for singles; a two-pack of the 30″ shelf works out at $48.75 against $45.50. Order the number you actually need. Clips are separate at 65 cents each, four per shelf.
Can I match grey cabinet paint at a hardware store for touch-ups?
We would not. A mid-tone grey that is slightly off does not look slightly off — it looks blue, green or brown, because at that depth the eye reads a mismatch as a different colour rather than a different brightness. The factory kit at $62.40 is matched to the finish as sprayed; judge the cured patch under the kitchen’s permanent lights.
Can I put custom doors on Fabuwood cabinet boxes?
Yes — order the cabinet code with -BO for the assembled, finished box and add doors, fronts, hinges and glides. Just remember the face frame shows around every opening in this finish, so a front with real contrast reads as intended while a near-grey reads as a matching error. If the front will be grey, buy the complete cabinet.
