Finishing the vanity: the parts checklist to run before a bathroom order goes in

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

A cabinet quote is a list of boxes. An installed vanity is boxes plus the small parts that make them look built in rather than delivered, and those parts are where orders go wrong — not because they are expensive, but because nobody thinks of them until the fitter asks. This department holds 49 listings, and a shopper who reads it as 49 different products will buy the wrong things and miss the right ones. So read it as a checklist instead. Below, in the order a quote is actually built: what the room sees from the doorway, what the box stands on, what happens under the bowl, what hangs on the inside of a door, where ornament belongs, and then the five lines a vanity order needs that this page does not sell at all.

What is in the Galaxy Nickel vanity accessories department, and what is not

Start with the inventory, because the listing count is misleading. Forty-two of the 49 lines are the same part in six code spellings and seven sizes, and the remaining seven are genuinely seven different things. Grouped by the job each does:

Two warnings about the store titles before you shop, both of which will save money. The listings that say "Side Panel" are not end panels — they are platforms the vanity stands on, and nothing in that group of 42 will cover an exposed cabinet side. And the listing that says "Garbage Pull-Out" holds no bin: the code reads V for vanity, GO for grooming organiser, 12 for the width and FD for the full-height door it travels with, and the photographs show stainless canisters, lined shelves and a receptacle block. The part that actually takes a bin is the U-shaped one. Reading the code rather than the title is a habit worth acquiring before any of this is ordered.

Notice, too, what is absent. There are no toe kicks, no fillers, no scribe moulding and no decorative end panels in this department — those exist, but they live with the kitchen parts under cabinet accessories and decorative accessories, and a bathroom run needing a 2″ filler beside a wall will find it there.

First: does any side of this vanity face the room?

Diagram showing where an end panel, a filler and scribe molding sit on a cabinet run
End panel, filler, scribe — the three finishing parts. Only one of the three is a bathroom problem, and it is the one this department does not stock.

This is the question to answer before any other, because it is the one most commonly missed and the only one that cannot be fixed after delivery without a second order. A vanity that runs wall to wall needs nothing. A vanity that stops in open floor — in a doorway, beside a bath, at the end of a short run — has a side that people see, and an unfinished cabinet side is raw veneer. In a kitchen it hides behind a dishwasher. In a bathroom, at two feet, it does not hide at all.

The awkward part is that the fix is not on this page. Search the department for a panel and you will find 42 listings with "Side Panel" in the title, all of which are platforms; none is a sheet for a cabinet end. A finished end for a vanity is quoted against the height and depth of the box it dresses — and since every bath cabinet here is the same 34″ and 21″, a part priced by vanity width, as all 42 of these are, cannot be it. Tell us which side is exposed when you send the order and it goes on as its own line. The end panel, filler and scribe guide explains the three parts and which one you are asking for.

Who needs it: anyone whose vanity ends in open floor, and anyone putting a vanity in a powder room seen from a hallway, where both ends may show. Who does not: a vanity in an alcove, or one that runs to the wall at both ends, which is most hall baths.

Second: toe kick, plinth, or feet

A vanity arrives with a ¾″ plywood toe kick recessed into the bottom of the box, finished, ready to install. You can stop there and most people should. The alternative is to stand the whole cabinet on a platform — one of those 42 listings — which lifts the box, removes the recess and turns it into a piece of furniture standing on the floor. Flat platforms are GN SPF and GN VPF, $217.75 at 24″ rising to $321.75 at 60″. Footed ones come with the turned foot already fitted, taper on the TF codes and cove on the CF ones, $386.75 at 24″ to $490.75 at 60″. Neither the profile nor the foot shape changes the figure, so pick by what the room already has rather than by price — there is nothing to save.

Who needs it: a powder room or guest bath, where the vanity is looked at for a minute and the furniture read is the entire effect, and a primary bath where the platform is a small fraction of a large bill. Who does not: a children’s bath, a rental, or any bathroom that gets mopped rather than wiped. A plinth stands in every splash and every mop stroke where a toe kick sits in shadow — on a painted cabinet that becomes a maintenance line at ankle height, and on this depth of gray a dried water mark at floor level shows more readily than it would on a white one.

Two pieces of arithmetic to settle before ordering. A platform raises the finished counter height, so it has to be decided before the fabricator templates the top, not after — a vanity that measures 34″ in the catalogue does not measure 34″ once it is standing on something. And the loose bun feet, GN TBF and GN CBF at $42.90 each, exist only for a flat platform you already own or already bought; the footed platforms arrive with theirs fitted, so buying both is buying the same thing twice.

Third: under the bowl, where the plumber has the final say

The cabinet under a basin is the one with the most wasted volume and the fewest options, which is why three of the seven real parts here live in it. All three are decided by where the drain and the stops sit, so none of them should be ordered before someone has looked at the wall.

Who needs this group: a family bath needs the bin pull-out; a narrow bath with no drawers needs the organiser; two adults sharing a primary bath on the same schedule are the only household we would put the powered tower in front of. Who does not: a powder room. That cabinet holds a spare roll or two and a cloth; spending $659.75 to divide them into six compartments is a budget better aimed at the mirror and the lighting.

The bin that gets off the floor — GN UVTCPO-30 BLUM, $646.75

A carrier notched in a U so its two arms pass either side of the trap, riding Blum runners in a 30″ sink base with a waste bin aboard. It is dearer than the cabinet housing it, and still the first line we would add to a family bathroom, because a bin standing on tile is the thing guests notice and children kick. The drain has to be roughed in high and to one side; low and centred will not clear.

Bins in a narrow cabinet — GN VOPO-24 BLUM, $659.75

Six reversible bins fitted into a 24″ sink base, for the bathroom too narrow to spare any width for a drawer stack. It earns its keep where three children share one cabinet and a bin each stops the arguments; in a room used twice a month it is compartments looking for contents.

Hot tools with an outlet — GN VGO12FD BLUM, $1,556.75

Despite the store title, this is the grooming tower. Twelve inches of full-door pull-out fitted with steel canisters, non-slip shelving and — the listings say — power inside the carcass, so a dryer goes away without being unplugged. Two things travel with it: a cabinet of its own, GN VB12FD at $328.25, and an electrician on site while the wall is still open, since the circuit feeding it must be GFCI-protected. Get the power specification written onto the order. Listing wording is inconsistent, and at this figure a verbal assurance is not enough.

Fourth: the inside of the door, and the retrofit nobody plans for

GN VASR-30, $240.50, is a rack that mounts on the inside of a door in a 30″ vanity and holds a hairdryer and a straightener in steel bins on a maple frame. It is the least glamorous line in the department and the one we recommend most often, for one reason: it is the only part here that can be added to a vanity that is already installed, tiled around and plumbed in. Everything else on this checklist has to be decided before delivery.

Who needs it: any household that owns hot tools and did not buy a drawer stack, which is most hall bathrooms; anyone whose bathroom is finished and whose storage turned out to be wrong. Who does not: a bathroom with a proper drawer base beside the bowl, where the tools already have a home. Choose the door it hangs on with the same care as combo handing — it wants the door that opens into clear floor, and it costs the cabinet a little door clearance, so a rack on the door nearest a toilet is a rack that hits the toilet. The rack page prices it against the drawer combo you might have bought instead.

Fifth: ornament, and the one place it belongs

Mid-tone gray shaker cabinet door in the Fabuwood Allure Galaxy line
The door every part on this list attaches to. An applied onlay reads as relief on a mid-tone because the shadow it throws is darker than the paint — on a white door the same shadow is the loudest thing in the room.

GN VDO, $425.75, is a carved onlay applied to a door face. It is the most divisive line in the department and the rule we give is a strict one: one piece, in one room, on a vanity that is already standing on feet, where nothing else in the bathroom is decorated. Never repeated down a run, and never in a family bathroom, where an applied edge is a thing to be knocked off and a chip on a painted door shows as a pale line.

The finish makes a small difference here and it is in this part’s favour. An onlay works by casting a shadow, and on a mid-tone gray that shadow sits close enough to the paint to read as relief; on a bright white the same shadow is the highest-contrast thing on the door and pulls the eye harder than the ornament deserves. If you want ornament on a painted bathroom door, this depth of colour is a good one to want it on. One unresolved question before you buy: no specification we can point to says whether the piece arrives finished or bare. Put it to us in writing. Matching a factory paint on site is possible, but it is a decision to make with your eyes open rather than to discover on delivery. The onlay page sets out where it works and where it fights the door, and the colour guide shows the door it is going on.

Last: five lines this department does not sell you

Run this list against the quote before it goes in. Each of these is needed by a finished bathroom and none of them is on this page — which is the single most useful thing a checklist can tell you.

  1. A finished end, if any cabinet side faces the room. Quoted against the cabinet, not stocked as an accessory, and emphatically not one of the 42 "side panel" listings.
  2. A filler, where the run meets a wall that is not square. Fillers and scribe live with the kitchen cabinet accessories, in the same finish.
  3. The countertop, the basin and the faucet. Yours to choose and yours to budget — templated by a fabricator after the cabinets are installed, not before.
  4. Pulls and knobs. Cabinet doors ship undrilled. On a gray run the metal does real work: brushed nickel and brass both sit well, matte black reads graphic, and the choice is easier made beside the countertop sample than alone.
  5. The mirror, the lighting and the extractor. Not cabinetry, but the extractor in particular is the cheapest protection a painted box in a wet room will ever get, and the bulb temperature decides how the finish reads — 3000K to 4000K keeps a mid-tone gray crisp.

Each of the seven pages below picks up one line from this checklist and works it through: fit checks, the questions for the plumber or the electrician, and a plain verdict on whether the part repays its price in a bathroom like yours. For the boxes themselves, see the vanities page; the full colour story and the kitchen side of this finish are on the collection page. Want the room laid out with every line already counted? Send us the measurements — the drawing costs nothing. Trade buyers specifying bathrooms in quantity are better served through Captivating Pro.

Side Panel

Every plinth code in the range, sorted by the cabinet width each is built for, with the cabinet-plus-platform total at each one and the finished-height sum to do before templating.

Bun Feet

Taper or cove, $42.90 each, and the only situation in which buying them separately makes sense.

U-Shaped Sink Base

How the U-shaped carrier clears a trap, which rough-in positions it works with, and what to photograph before ordering.

Organizer Pull-Out

Six bins in a 24″ sink base. Three ways to fit out that cabinet, costed, and what the bins actually hold.

Garbage Pull-Out

The powered tower hiding behind a wrong title — the households it repays, and what your electrician has to do first.

Appliance Storage Rack

The only line here that can be added after tiling. Door choice, clearance loss, and how it compares with buying a drawer combo instead.

Decorative Onlay

One place for ornament on a painted vanity door, the shadow it throws on a mid-tone, and the finish question to ask before it is glued.

Common questions

What accessories do I actually need for a bathroom vanity?
Most vanities need none of them. Work down four questions instead: does a side face the room (then you need a finished end, quoted separately), does the room want the furniture look (a platform), is there a bin on the floor (the U-shaped pull-out), and does anyone own a hairdryer with nowhere to put it (the door rack). If all four answers are no, order the cabinets and stop.
Are the Fabuwood "side panel" listings end panels for an exposed cabinet side?
No. All 42 of them are vanity platforms — low plinths, flat or with turned feet already fitted — priced by vanity width. A finished end is priced against a cabinet's height and depth, and since every bath box here is the same 34″ and 21″, a part priced by width cannot be one. Tell us which side is exposed and it goes on the order as its own line.
Should a bathroom vanity sit on a platform or keep its toe kick?
Platform for a powder room or guest bath, where the vanity is looked at more than used. Toe kick for a children's bath, a rental, or any bathroom that gets mopped — a plinth stands in every splash where a recessed kick sits in shadow. And decide before the countertop is templated, because a platform changes the finished height.
How much does a vanity platform cost?
Flat platforms run $217.75 at 24″ to $321.75 at 60″, with the bath-tall TP1821 size at $409.50. Footed ones, with the taper or cove foot already fitted, run $386.75 to $490.75, and $578.50 for TP1821. Shaker and Vera profiles cost the same, as do the two foot shapes. Loose bun feet are $42.90 each and only make sense under a flat platform you already have.
Which vanity accessory hides the bathroom bin?
GN UVTCPO-30 BLUM, $646.75 — a pull-out notched in a U so it travels round the trap inside a 30″ sink base. The listing titled "Garbage Pull-Out" is not it: that code is a grooming organiser with canisters, shelves and a receptacle, at $1,556.75, and it holds no bin at all.
Can I add vanity storage after the bathroom is finished?
One part on this page retrofits: the door-mounted storage rack, GN VASR-30 at $240.50, which mounts inside the door of a 30″ vanity and takes a hairdryer and a straightener. Everything else — platforms, pull-outs, the powered tower, the onlay — has to be decided before the cabinets are delivered and the top is templated.
What is not included when you order vanity cabinets?
The countertop, the basin, the faucet, the pulls, and a finished end if a cabinet side faces the room. Fillers and scribe moulding are stocked with the kitchen accessories rather than here. Cabinets ship pre-assembled and undrilled for hardware, in seven days to three weeks.
