At forty-two inches the collection sells more range hoods than cabinets

Count the listings at this width and the ratio is the first surprise: eleven range hoods against six cabinets. Nothing else in the collection is stocked that way round. Forty-two inches is primarily an appliance dimension here, secondarily a corner and a sink, and only incidentally a cabinet — and it is also a wall cabinet height, which is what most people who type the number are actually thinking of.
Eleven hoods, six boxes
The hood list covers five models, several of them offered with a timber or walnut interior at no extra cost. The cabinet list covers three bases, one upper and two bathroom boxes. Side by side, at displayed prices on the review date:

The cheapest hood costs more than any three cabinets on that list put together. If a 42-inch hood is in the plan, it is not a line item — it is the plan’s largest single number after the appliances themselves, and everything above and beside it has to be drawn around it.
The other forty-two
Forty-two inches is also the tallest standard wall cabinet, and that is what most searches mean. A 42-inch-high upper takes the run to the ceiling in an eight-foot room, which removes the dust ledge and removes the option of a crown. Boxes at that height exist at nearly every width, from $282.75 for the 9-inch to $724.75 for the 39-inch, with the matching glazed fronts, fillers, skins and pilasters cut to suit.

One upper, and it opens the wrong way
GN W421224LU at $689.00 is a lift-up: 42 inches wide, 12 inches high, 24 inches deep, with a door that swings upward on a stay rather than outward on hinges. The depth is the clue — it is built to sit over a refrigerator or a wide appliance recess where a 12-inch-deep box would leave a shelf of dust in front of it.
Lift-ups need headroom above them and a hand free to close them, so they are a poor choice at eye level and a very good one above something you do not stand directly under. Check the ceiling clearance before specifying — the door travels well past the top of the box.
The two bathroom boxes
GN VSB42-34 at $542.75 is a 42-inch sink cabinet, 21 inches deep and 34 inches tall. GN VSD42 at $874.25 combines a bowl with a bank of drawers in a single box, which is the standard answer for a wide single-sink vanity and the reason this width survives in bathrooms where it has largely left kitchens.
Six side panels finish the ends, $269.75 for the flat version and $442.00 for the shaker, and a premium valance at $221.00 will close the gap under a wall-hung cabinet if the run needs it.
