Sized sideways: fitting a Galaxy Pistachio Green box to the refrigerator opening
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
The box over a refrigerator gets planned from the top down — how deep, how tall, what will live in it — and then goes wrong sideways. Its width has to match an opening that is set by the appliance plus the air the appliance asks for, its sides have to line up with whatever stands either side of the fridge, and one of those sides is where the fridge door hinges and swings. A Galaxy Pistachio Green refrigerator box comes in three widths, and the right one is decided by the fridge you are buying and by the space its doors need to open fully. This page works through that horizontal arithmetic, and through the one width of fridge these boxes cannot cover.
Three widths, set by the opening rather than the fridge
All the boxes on this page are 24 inches deep so they come forward to meet the appliance, and they are 30, 33 or 36 inches wide. The width you want is the width of the opening the fridge stands in — the space between the tall cabinet, panel or wall on one side and whatever is on the other — not the nominal width of the fridge itself. Manufacturers publish the opening they want for each model, and it is usually a little wider than the appliance, because a fridge needs a small gap at each side for air and for its doors. Take that figure from the installation guide for the model you are buying.
Then choose the box that fills the opening, so its two sides run straight up from the panels or cabinets either side of the fridge. If the opening is a fraction wider than the box, a thin scribe or filler closes it; if the opening is narrower than the box, the box will not go in. Round down, never up.
| Width | Heights stocked | Price range | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30″ | 15, 18, 21, 24″ | $351.00 – $497.25 | No 12″-high box at this width |
| 33″ | 12, 15, 18, 21, 24″ | $455.00 – $546.00 | Priced above the 36″ at four of five heights |
| 36″ | 12, 15, 18, 21, 24″ | $370.50 – $578.50 | The common width, and the widest two-door box |
That middle row deserves a straight explanation. On the review date the 33-inch box was displayed above the 36-inch one at every height except the tallest: GPG W331224 at $455.00 against GPG W361224 at $370.50; GPG W331524 at $461.50 against GPG W361524 at $403.00; GPG W331824 at $468.00 against GPG W361824 at $419.25; GPG W332124 at $497.25 against GPG W362124 at $487.50. Only at 24 inches high does it turn round — GPG W332424 at $546.00, GPG W362424 at $578.50. That is what the grid showed, and we would rather you knew it than found it.
It matters because a 33-inch opening is common for a 33-inch fridge. If yours is one, buy the 33 — a 36 will not fit a 33 opening, and the price difference is not a reason to change the room. But if you are still choosing the appliance and the wall could take either, the numbers lean slightly towards the 36-inch opening. Ask us to confirm the current figures before ordering either.
The side the fridge door hinges on
A refrigerator door does not just open; it swings through an arc from its hinge, and on many models the door has to go well past ninety degrees before the crisper drawers and shelves inside can be pulled straight out. If the hinge side of the fridge is tight against a wall or a deep tall cabinet, the door stops at ninety and the drawers catch on it. It is one of the most common complaints about fitted kitchens, and it is entirely a sideways problem.
Manufacturers state how much clearance the hinge side needs for full opening, and it varies a lot between models and between French-door and single-door designs. Find that figure before the layout is fixed, then check what is on the hinge side in your plan. A wall right there is the worst case. A tall cabinet is fine if its face stands back far enough, which it may not, since a tall cabinet is 24 inches deep and a fridge with doors is usually deeper. A finished end panel between fridge and wall gives you a known, fixed dimension to plan against.
The panel parts for a fridge surround are on the refrigerator end panel page: GPG REP1296, a 12- by 96-inch panel, at $224.25; GPG REP2496 at 24 by 96 inches, $295.75; the end cap that closes the panel’s front edge, GPG RFPEC, at $97.50; and two further refrigerator panels listed as GPG REP1-1/2 at $250.25 and GPG REP3 at $325.00. Which of them your opening needs depends on where the hinge sits and how far the fridge stands proud of the run, so send us the elevation and the fridge model and we will specify them rather than have you pick from a list.
Over a 42- or 48-inch fridge
The widest two-door box on this page is 36 inches. Built-in and side-by-side refrigerators at 42 and 48 inches wide have no 24-inch-deep two-door box to match them in this finish. What there is, is the lift-up: GPG W421224LU at $689.00 and GPG W481224LU at $747.50, both 24 inches deep and 12 inches high, on the lift-up wall page.
That changes the plan in two ways. First, the height: a lift-up is 12 inches tall, so over a tall built-in on a standard ceiling it may be exactly right, and over a shorter appliance it will leave a gap above that the crown or a filler has to close. Second, the door: a single front that lifts is a different thing to use from two doors that swing, especially at seven feet off the floor, and the exact mechanism is not described on the product page — ask us what ships before you design around it. For anything wider than 36 inches that is not a 42 or a 48, talk to us first; there is no stock box for it and the answer will be a combination we should draw together.
The fridge wall as the place the green goes

Here is a use of this finish that people do not always consider. A refrigerator wall — pantry, fridge with its deep box on top, pantry — is one tall, continuous block from floor to crown, and it is a very good place to put a colour. It is a single object, so the green reads as a deliberate piece of furniture rather than a coat spread across the room. It sits at the edge of the working kitchen rather than behind the range, so it frames the space without dominating the view. And it lets the uppers elsewhere stay light, in Frost or Linen, which share this box and price grid.
The appliance face sits in the middle of it, so think about how it looks there. Stainless is not a neutral mirror: it picks up the colours around it, and in a green surround it will read a touch cooler and greener than it does in a white one. That is usually pleasant with a greyed sage. A black or dark-finish fridge makes a stronger, more graphic contrast. A panel-ready fridge would disappear into the wall, but there are no refrigerator door panels on the parts list in this finish — if that is the look you want, ask us before you buy the appliance.
And a word on commitment, since green raises it. A green fridge wall is a contained decision: one elevation, one colour block, and a buyer walking through later sees a feature wall rather than a whole kitchen to reconsider. The broader question of whether green dates is argued in the green kitchen cabinets guide; the tall cabinets that make up the rest of the wall are on the tall cabinets page.
Ordering the box and its surround
Measure the opening at the top, the middle and the floor, because walls and tall cabinets are rarely perfectly plumb, and take the narrowest figure. Get the fridge’s installation guide and note the opening it wants and the hinge-side clearance. Then order the box, the panels, the end cap and any filler as one set, alongside the fridge decision rather than ahead of it. If the appliance is not chosen yet, tell us and we will hold the box back and ship everything else.
An extra deep shelf is available if you want one: AS-W3624D is $110.50 for the 36-inch box, and AS-W3024D and AS-W3324D are $78.00 each. Everything arrives pre-assembled in 7 days to 3 weeks. Send the fridge model and a sketch for a free 3D design and the elevation comes back with the opening, the hinge side and the panels drawn. Trade buyers use Captivating Pro, and the rest of the finish is on the collection page.
Common questions
- What size cabinet goes over a 36-inch refrigerator?
- The box that fills the opening, which for a 36-inch fridge is normally the 36-inch-wide, 24-inch-deep box. Take the opening width from the fridge’s installation guide rather than the appliance width, and never choose a box wider than the opening.
- Why is the 33-inch refrigerator cabinet more expensive than the 36-inch?
- On the review date the 33-inch box was displayed above the 36-inch at the 12, 15, 18 and 21-inch heights — for example $455.00 against $370.50 at 12 inches high. Only at 24 inches high was it cheaper. If your opening is 33 inches, buy the 33; ask us to confirm current prices.
- How much space does a refrigerator door need beside a wall?
- It depends on the model. Many fridges need the door to open well past 90 degrees before the drawers come out, which takes clearance on the hinge side. The installation guide gives the figure; plan the wall, panel or tall cabinet on that side around it.
- What cabinet goes over a 42- or 48-inch built-in fridge?
- In this finish, the 24-inch-deep lift-up: $689.00 at 42 inches wide and $747.50 at 48, both 12 inches high. There is no two-door 24-inch-deep box wider than 36 inches. Ask us to confirm the lift mechanism before designing around it.
- Does a stainless fridge work with green cabinets?
- Yes. Stainless reflects the colours around it, so in a green surround it reads slightly cooler and greener, which suits a greyed sage. A dark or black fridge gives more contrast. Look at a door sample next to the appliance finish if you can.
