A navy vanity as the darkest thing in a pale bathroom: planning Galaxy Indigo by contrast, light and face

In most bathrooms the floor is pale, the top is pale, the tile is pale, and a navy vanity is the one dark block between them. That single fact decides more about how the room turns out than the width or the bowl count, so this page is organised around it. It starts with what Fabuwood Galaxy Indigo really looks like off the screen, then works through the three bands of value a bathroom stacks up, the bulb that makes or breaks a blue paint, the choice of box by the face it shows, four builds with codes and displayed prices, what a saturated paint shows in a wet room, and how to tie it to a kitchen that already has blue in it.
What colour Galaxy Indigo actually is, off the screen
Expect a quieter blue than the name suggests. Sampled from the swatch, the door averages about #404754: a navy with a good deal of gray in it, closer to slate than to a marine or royal blue, and some way off black. It is a flat, opaque paint with no grain showing, in a low sheen. Fabuwood describes it as a deep navy with violet undertones, and that is fair within limits — under a warm bulb the colour can lean faintly toward violet, but in daylight nobody reads it as purple.
Two things to discount before buying. Photographs, including the room shots on this page, almost always show navy cabinetry brighter and bluer than it is, because cameras lift dark colours. And the collection copy mentions polished surfaces; the Galaxy door is not a high-gloss finish, and you should expect a soft, low-reflection face that does not mirror the sconces. The only fair judgment is the Indigo door sample, which displays at $35.00, held where the cabinet will stand.
Floor, box, top: the three bands of value in a navy bathroom

Look at a bathroom from the doorway and it resolves into horizontal stripes: floor, cabinet, counter, wall. With a pale box those stripes blur together and nobody notices. With a navy one the cabinet becomes a band of dark between two others, and the question is whether the bands either side of it are light enough to frame it. When they are, the vanity looks crisp and intentional. When the floor or the top is also dark, the dark bands merge into one heavy mass and the room feels smaller than it is.
| Around the box | What happens | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| White or marble-look hex floor, white quartz top | The navy is framed top and bottom; the shaker frame lines read clearly | The classic, and the safest in a small room |
| Pale white oak or oak-look plank floor | Warm wood under a cool-leaning navy; the box looks more like furniture | Our favourite in a larger bath |
| Mid-gray porcelain floor | Two cool mid-to-dark values meet at the toe kick and soften into each other | Workable if the top is bright white |
| Charcoal or slate tile floor | The toe kick disappears; the box appears to float, or to sink | Only with a very light top and wall |
| Dark soapstone or black quartz top | Box and counter read as one dark slab | Avoid; save dark stone for a pale cabinet |
| Cream or warm-white quartz top | Softer contrast; pulls the navy toward its warmer, violet side | Good with brass, less crisp than white |
Patterned cement or encaustic tile is the one floor that plays by different rules: if it carries a blue close to this one, the vanity looks planned from it; if its blue is brighter or greener, the two argue. Take the door sample to the tile showroom. The wall is the fourth band, and in a small bath a pale wall is what stops the navy from dominating; a navy wall behind the cabinet is a bold look that needs a big window. The guide to matching cabinets with counters, tile and floor works the same method in more detail.
Why a navy cabinet turns purple or muddy under the wrong bulb
Pale finishes forgive lighting; saturated ones do not. A very warm 2700K lamp is yellow-heavy, and yellow light falling on a grayed navy does two things at once: it dulls the blue toward a muddy charcoal and it exaggerates whatever red is in the pigment, which is where the violet cast Fabuwood mentions comes from. Very cool light above about 4000K goes the other way and makes the box look steely and cold beside warm skin tones in the mirror.
The middle usually works best. Lamps around 3000K to 3500K, with a colour-rendering index of 90 or higher printed on the box, keep this paint recognisably navy. Side sconces at face height light the front of the cabinet more evenly than a single bar above the mirror, which throws the lower drawers into shadow. And a windowless bath has no daylight to average things out, so whatever the fixture does to the door is the colour you live with.
Doors, drawers or a false front: choosing the box by the face it shows

On a white vanity the face barely registers. On navy it is most of the design, because every frame edge, reveal and pull stands out against the dark. So before thinking about widths, decide what you want the front of the cabinet to look like, then pick the family that gives it. All of them share one height, one depth and the same five-piece door; prices below are for the box alone.
| Family | Face | Widths and price | Reads as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-height door base | One tall door, no drawer | 12″–36″, $328.25–$490.75 | The calmest block of colour; the fewest pulls |
| Vanity base | One drawer over one door | 12″–30″, $364.00–$555.75 | A small companion piece with a single horizontal line |
| Sink base | Two doors under a false front | 21″–42″, $422.50–$542.75 | Symmetrical and simple; the false front carries no pull |
| Drawer base | A stack of drawers | 12″–27″ and 33″, $601.25–$877.50 | A ladder of pulls; the most furniture-like face |
| Sink and drawer combo | Doors beside a drawer stack, one carcass | 30″–60″, $757.25–$1,196.00 | Busy and practical; no seam under the top |
| Vanity wall cabinet | One door, 24″ × 30″, 12″ deep | $490.75 | Carries the colour above the counter |
Metal is the other half of the face. Brass and warm gold are the classic partner for navy and the reason the look became popular: warm metal on a cool-leaning blue is the strongest contrast you can buy at that size. Polished or brushed nickel is crisper and cooler and keeps a navy bath looking tailored rather than traditional. Matte black is close in value to this paint, so black pulls recede and the face reads as one plain panel — a legitimate choice for a minimal room, a waste of the shaker frame otherwise. Pulls are priced apart from the boxes in the listings; confirm with your designer what your quote includes.
Four Indigo vanity builds, from a powder room to a shared bath
These are the arrangements we draw most often in this colour, chosen for how much dark each room can carry rather than for the widest box that fits. Every figure is cabinets only; the top, basins, taps and pulls are extra.
- Powder room, one small block: GI VSB24-34 at $438.75, or GI VSB21-34 at $422.50 where the wall is tight. Two doors, one false front, nothing else. In a room this small the navy is the whole scheme, so keep the floor and the wall light.
- Hall bath, 36″: GI VSD36DL or GI VSD36DR at $783.25. Drawers for the daily clutter beside a sink bay; the handing letter is where the drawer stack sits, so pick it by where the drain stub already is.
- A 48″ wall: GI VSD48 in one piece at $975.00, or GI VSB30-34 beside GI VDB18-34 at $1,134.25. The one-piece keeps a single uninterrupted navy front; the two-piece gives a deeper drawer stack and a visible seam, which on a dark paint shows more than it would on white.
- Two people at 60″: GI VSD60DOUBLE at $1,046.50 gives two basins; GI VSD60SINGLE at $1,196.00 gives one basin between two drawer banks. Wider than that, two GI VSB30-34 around a GI VDB12-34 come to $1,524.25 across 72″.
The pale-upper version is worth knowing. A navy box with a navy 24″ vanity wall cabinet over the toilet doubles the dark in the room, which suits a large bath and crowds a small one. The same GI WVS2430 shape can be ordered from Frost, Dove or Linen instead — Galaxy prices its painted finishes alike — so navy stays below the counter and a white sits above it. That is the bathroom version of the navy-island, white-perimeter kitchen, and it keeps a windowless room from closing in.
Does a navy vanity show dust and water? What this paint reveals
Dark paint and a sink live uneasily together, and it is better to know what you are signing up for. The marks that show on this finish are the pale ones: toothpaste spatter on the false front, dried soap and hard-water drips on the toe kick, talc and dust on the top rail of each door and along the bottom edge of the recessed panel, where it collects. A chip shows as a light fleck rather than disappearing, and the drawer edges and the corner by the bowl take most of the knocks.
What it hides is the thing that ruins a white vanity: fingerprints, smudges from damp hands and the grayish film that builds up around the pulls. On balance, a navy box needs a quick wipe more often and a real clean less often than a white one. Use a soft cloth, water with a little mild soap, and dry it straight afterwards; skip abrasive pads and harsh sprays, which can burnish a low-sheen paint into shiny patches that show on a dark colour. The guides to caring for painted cabinets and matte finishes go further. For a chip, ask your designer about a factory touch-up rather than matching a hardware-store navy by eye.
Echoing a navy kitchen island, or the only blue in a white house
Indigo is the go-to island colour in the Galaxy range, so a good share of the people ordering this vanity already have, or are about to have, the same paint in the kitchen. Ordering the bath in the same finish gives you the same door and the same paint, and the two rooms read as one house. What they will not share is light: the kitchen island sits under daylight and pendants, the vanity under one bathroom fixture, and the same navy can look a shade warmer or darker from room to room. That is normal, and the bulb advice above is the fix, not a different finish.
If the rest of the house is white, the vanity becomes the single colour in it. That works best when one thing carries across: the same brass or nickel on the vanity as on the kitchen hardware and the door levers, so the navy looks like part of a plan. The Frost versus Dove comparison covers which white sits better beside Indigo, and the Indigo kitchen collection has the base and island boxes if the bathroom turns out to be the first room of several.
Sizes, construction and what ships with the box
Every base in this family is 34½″ tall — the -34 in the code — and 21″ deep, so order a 22″ top rather than a kitchen-depth slab. There is no lowered accessible vanity base in this finish. The boxes are ½″ veneered plywood with a five-piece door around a ⅜″ MDF centre panel, which is the right substrate under a paint like this one; drawers are ⅝″ solid wood with dovetail joints on Blum soft-close runners, and the hinges are Blum soft-close as well.
Everything ships pre-assembled, typically in 2 weeks, under a limited lifetime warranty. A side that faces the room needs finishing in the same navy: the listings describe a finished-side option at $96 per side, and the platforms and feet are on the vanity accessories page; confirm on the quote which route you are taking. The full range is on the vanities page. Send a wall width and a photo to our design service and a free layout comes back in 24–48 hours; contractors ordering bathrooms regularly should look at Captivating Pro, which carries trade pricing.
Common questions
- Is Galaxy Indigo a true navy, or closer to black or purple?
- It is a muted, grayed navy, about #404754 from the swatch — darker and quieter than a royal or marine blue, but clearly blue rather than black. Under a very warm bulb it can lean faintly violet. The $35.00 door sample, viewed under your own bathroom lights, is the reliable check.
- What countertop and floor go with a navy vanity?
- Light on both sides of it: a white or marble-look quartz top and a pale floor — white hex tile or light oak — frame the navy and keep a small room open. Avoid a dark top, which merges with the box into one heavy slab.
- Brass or nickel pulls on navy bathroom cabinetry?
- Brass or warm gold is the classic, highest-contrast choice and suits a traditional or transitional room. Nickel is cooler and more tailored. Matte black sits close to this paint in value, so it nearly disappears — fine for a minimal look, less so if you want the shaker frame to show.
- Why does my navy cabinet sample look purple?
- Usually the bulb. Very warm light around 2700K exaggerates the violet undertone in this paint and dulls the blue. Lamps at 3000K–3500K with a CRI of 90 or more keep it reading as navy.
- How much is a 36-inch Indigo vanity, cabinet only?
- The 36″ sink-and-drawer combo, GI VSD36DL or GI VSD36DR, displays at $783.25. A plain 36″ sink base, GI VSB36-34, is $490.75 and has doors only. Tops, basins, taps and pulls are extra.
- Does a dark vanity show dust and toothpaste?
- The pale marks do: toothpaste, soap residue, hard-water drips and dust on the door rails. Fingerprints and damp-hand smudges show far less than on white. Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap, then dry.
