Eighteen inches and the pair test: two of them against one thirty-six

Eighteen inches is half of thirty-six, which is why this width gets bought in twos: a pair flanking a range, a pair either side of a window, a pair of pantries bracketing a fridge. Before you draw that, it is worth knowing what the second box costs you. In every family here except one, buying the pair is more expensive than buying the single — and the exception is the one nobody predicts.
What the second box costs, family by family

The pattern is the face. Two cabinets means two carcasses, two sets of hinges and twice the finishing labour, and that lands hardest on the cheap boxes: the full-height-door base costs 52% more as a pair. Glass escapes because a glazed front is priced on glass area and framing, and two 18″ fronts contain the same glass as one 36″ pair of doors.
Three times the pair is still right
Symmetry around an appliance. A 36″ range with a 36″ hood above it wants matching columns either side, and two 18s give you that where a single box cannot. Door swing: an 18″ door needs half the arc of a 36″ pair — in a galley under four feet wide, that is the difference between a working kitchen and a hallway. And access, because two 18″ pantries mean two shallow doors rather than one wide one hiding a deep corner.
What does not justify the premium is storage. A single wide box holds more than two narrow ones of the same total width, every time, because you lose two stiles and a side panel to the split. If the run is plain and the width is free, take the 36-inch box.
The boxes that exist at 18 and nowhere near it
GN FD18 at $559.00 is a file drawer base — two deep drawers built to take hanging folders, and the only cabinet in the collection designed for paper rather than food. It is the reason an 18″ run turns up in home offices and at the end of a kitchen desk.
Above it, GN WD1848 through WD1860, $796.25 to $926.25, are wall cabinets built 48 to 60 inches tall with drawers underneath shelves — a counter-to-ceiling column only 12 inches deep. Pair GN WD1860 with GNK GDWD1860 at $188.50 and you have a glazed 60-inch tower for $1,114.75. That combination exists at this width only.
The inserts nobody else gets
