Eighteen inches, priced by the drawer rather than by the box
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Eighteen is the first of the two awkward middles. Too narrow for a wide drawer bank to feel like a bargain, too wide to waste on a door and a shelf, and stocked with six part numbers that a price list sorts unhelpfully. Sort them a different way — by what each drawer in them costs — and the width makes immediate sense.
Six boxes, ranked by cost per drawer
Divide the displayed price by the number of drawers the box arrives with and a different ranking appears. It is a crude measure and it deliberately ignores the doors, which is the point: the doors on these boxes are nearly identical to one another, and the drawers are not.
| Part number | Displayed price | Drawers | Per drawer |
|---|---|---|---|
| GN DB18-4 | $799.50 | Four | $199.88 |
| GN DB18 | $646.75 | Three | $215.58 |
| GN B18 | $409.50 | One, over a door | $409.50 |
| GN FD18 | $559.00 | One file drawer, with storage above | $559.00 |
| GN B18FD | $373.75 | None — full-height door | — |
| GN B18FD-12D | $364.00 | None — full-height door, 12-inch depth | — |
The four-drawer bank is the cheapest drawer in the width and the dearest cabinet in it, which is exactly the kind of sentence a price column alone will never tell you. If drawers are what you are short of in the kitchen, this is the box; if they are not, everything above the middle of this table is money spent on mechanisms you will not use.
What each family gives you at an awkward width
The door boxes are conventional and good. GN B18 at $409.50 is the default eighteen and the one most slots want — a drawer for the small flat things, a door under it, a ¾-inch adjustable shelf 18 inches deep inside. GN B18FD at $373.75 drops the drawer for full height, and GN B18FD-12D at $364.00 does the same on a shallow box.
GN FD18 at $559.00 is what makes the number unusual. It is a filing cabinet wearing a kitchen door: rails inside for folders to hang from, built at this one width and at no other on the board. Drop paperwork into an ordinary deep drawer and within a week it is a pile; that is the whole difference, and it is the only reason to pay for one. Nobody publishes the rail spacing, so name your paper size when you order.
And eighteen is the width where a double waste pull-out stops being a compromise. GNK TC18 BLUM is $734.50, with GNK TC18FHD BLUM at the same price for the full-height-door box. That is $117.00 more than the 15-inch unit for two bins that are each actually worth having separately.
Where an eighteen belongs in the run
Three positions, in order of how often we draw them. Beside the dishwasher opening, where an eighteen and a twenty-one between them usually close whatever the sink base and the appliance leave. At the end of a run against a wall, where a single door has room to swing without meeting anything. And flanking a range, as a pair, where two eighteen-inch drawer banks give a cook more usable storage than one thirty-six would.
The position we would avoid is the middle of a long symmetrical wall. Eighteen inches of door between two twenty-fours is visible from the doorway — the eye reads door widths along a straight line before it reads anything else — and there is almost always a better place on the plan to put the remainder.
Common questions
- What is the price range at this width?
- A little over four hundred dollars separates the ends of it. GN B18FD-12D opens at $364.00, GN B18 sits in the middle at $409.50, GN DB18 is $646.75 and GN DB18-4 closes it at $799.50.
- Is a four-drawer base worth the extra over a three-drawer?
- GN DB18-4 is $152.75 more than GN DB18 and works out cheaper per drawer — $199.88 against $215.58. Buy it if sorting is the job; buy three drawers if something tall has to fit.
- What does GN FD18 do that a deep drawer does not?
- It carries rails, so folders hang rather than slump. The part displays at $559.00, this is the only width it is built in, and the rail spacing is not published — say which paper size you file before the order goes in.
- Is 18 inches wide enough for a double pull-out bin?
- Yes, and it is the narrowest width we would specify one at. GNK TC18 BLUM displays at $734.50. Check the unit’s stated minimum interior width against the box.
- Which 18-inch cabinet has the most storage?
- By volume, the full-height door box — nothing divides the interior. By usefulness, the drawer banks, because everything in a drawer comes to you rather than you reaching in after it.
