The door with no panel: what a glass front changes in a Galaxy Horizon run of uppers

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Prices quoted in this article were read off the grid on the review date; the live price grid on this page governs.

Take a Galaxy shaker door and remove its centre panel, and a glass front is what you have left: four rails and stiles around an opening. On a painted kitchen that makes little visual difference, because the frame and the panel are the same flat colour. On a Galaxy Horizon kitchen it makes a real one. The panel is the part of a stained door where the grain shows most, and the glass door is the one door in the run without it. This page covers what that means beside the solid doors, why glass belongs on the first order rather than as a later swap, where to put it relative to a window, and what each of the 20 sizes costs.

What is left of a stained shaker door when the centre goes

Fabuwood’s spec book describes the Galaxy door as a five-piece shaker: solid wood stiles and rails, ¾ inch thick and 2½ inches wide, joined by mortise and tenon around a recessed centre panel ⅜ inch thick. It calls that panel MDF/veneer, which means an MDF core faced with a wood veneer. That veneer is why grain shows through the stain on the centre of a solid door. In Fabuwood’s own photograph of its sample door, the panel’s grain looks more figured than the stiles around it; that is our reading of a photo, not a published spec.

A glass door keeps the frame and drops the panel. So the only stained surface it presents is the stiles and rails, around a pane. Next to solid doors, the glass door has the same colour on its frame and none of the figure in the middle. We have not been given the frame dimensions of the glass door, so we cannot tell you whether its rails match the solid door’s 2½ inches; ask us if the proportion matters to your drawing.

None of this is a problem. It is simply why a glass front reads slightly more linear and slightly lighter than its neighbours, even before anything goes behind it. Knowing that in advance means you will not mistake it for a mismatch when it arrives.

Twenty sizes, height by height

Five widths come in four heights, all in this stain: 15, 18, 24, 30 and 36 inches wide by 30, 36, 39 and 42 inches high. The table runs by height, because the height of a glass box is set by the run it sits in, and the width is then whatever the wall gives you.

Glass door wall cabinets, displayed prices on 2026-09-28. Codes are GHZ GDW + width + height. ⚠ = confirm before planning.

42″$139.75$162.50$234.00$279.50$321.75

Three of the 39-inch prices are lower than the 36-inch box of the same width, and the inversion is present in the list prices as well as the displayed ones. GHZ GDW2439 at $107.25 against GDW2436 at $201.50 is the clearest example. We cannot explain it, so we are flagging it: confirm those three figures with us before a quote depends on them. The 15- and 18-inch boxes at 39 inches step up normally.

The 39-inch height matters on this collection because the solid uppers, the fillers and the pilasters all come at 39 inches too, so a run built at that height can include glass without stepping. Read a code as width then height; how to read cabinet SKU codes explains the rest of the letters. The heights the glass has to match are on the wall cabinets page.

Order the glass with the run, not as a later swap

A common plan is to buy solid doors now and switch one or two to glass later. On a paint that is a small risk. On a stain it is a bigger one, and Fabuwood says as much. Its spec book says colour variation is normal on stained finishes, and its warranty says replacement cabinets may not match display samples or cabinets already installed. A glass front ordered a year after the kitchen will be a stained frame from a different run, hung between doors that have had a year of light.

The frame is also the part of the glass door that carries all of its colour, as above, and it sits at eye level in the most-looked-at section of the wall. So if glass is on the cards at all, put it on the first order. If you are undecided, settle the question before the order goes in rather than after it; that is the one point at which changing your mind costs nothing.

When the order arrives, open the glass doors’ boxes alongside the solid ones and look at them together before they are hung. If one frame looks noticeably different, it is easier to deal with on the floor than on the wall. The sample guide explains how to judge a stained part in your own light.

Glass beside a window: the frame gets the sun, the contents get the glare

A white shaker glass-front wall cabinet lit from inside with stemware, beside a window at dusk
A painted cabinet, shown for the placement. Glass uppers often sit next to the sink window, which puts their frames in the brightest light on the wall.

Glass uppers tend to flank the sink window, because the pair frames the window and the window lights what is inside. That also puts two stained frames beside the brightest surface in the room. Fabuwood’s warranty treats colour change from UV light and sunlight as outside its cover, and notes that colours may darken or lighten over time. A frame that catches afternoon sun every day for years is more exposed than the doors further along the wall.

The answer is not to avoid the window, which is often the right place for glass. It is to look at the light before you commit. If the window faces south or west and throws direct sun across the cabinet, plan a blind or ask your glazier about UV-reducing film or glass, as you would to protect a wood floor. If it faces north, the frame will see soft light and the question mostly goes away.

Window light also changes how this finish reads through the day. Homeowners describe it as looking cooler and a little dull on an overcast day and warmer in the sun. Next to a window, the glass frames will show that range most clearly, and at dusk, when the interior lights come on, the grey-taupe frame is lit from behind by the cabinet and from the front by the room. Hold a door sample in that spot in the morning and after dark before choosing between clear and textured glass; the glass buying guide covers the glass types.

What goes on the order beside the glass box

  1. Written confirmation of what each glass line ships as: frame or complete cabinet, glass included or not, glass type and mullion pattern.
  2. Confirmation of any 39-inch price you are relying on.
  3. Lighting, if the box will be looked into at night. Puck sets are sold by cabinet width: GHZ LED W15 at $91.00, LED W24 at $113.75, LED W30 at $130.00, LED W36 at $146.25. A driver, GHZ LED DRIVER, is $204.75, on the cabinet accessories page.
  4. A spare shelf or two, so the bays can be set to what goes in them. Two-packs are AS-W30-2 at $97.50 and AS-W36-2 at $130.00 on the loose parts page.
  5. Shading for any window that sends direct sun across the frames.

The corner version has its own page, diagonal corner glass cabinets, and the tall two-door unit that stands on the worktop is on double door glass cabinets. Solid two-door uppers to line up with are on the double door wall page. Everything in the collection is on the collection page, and for a whole wall, the free 3D design service will place the glass, draw it in the run and price it.

Common questions

Will a glass cabinet door match my solid stained doors?
The frame is the same stain, but a glass door has no centre panel, and on a solid Galaxy door that veneered panel is where the grain shows most. So a glass front reads slightly plainer and more linear than its neighbours. Fabuwood also says colour variation between stained parts is normal.
Can I add glass cabinet doors later?
You can, but on a stain the later part may not match. Fabuwood’s warranty says replacement cabinets may not match cabinets already installed. If glass is likely, put it on the first order.
Is the glass included with the glass door cabinet?
Confirm it for each line. The glass lines describe a frame prepped to accept glass and price well under the solid cabinet of the same size, so ask whether each ships as a complete cabinet or as a frame for a separately bought box, and whether the glass is included or glazed locally.
What sizes do glass door wall cabinets come in?
Widths of 15, 18, 24, 30 and 36 inches in heights of 30, 36, 39 and 42 inches, from $97.50 (15″ × 30″) to $321.75 (36″ × 42″). Three 39-inch prices sit below their 36-inch equivalents; confirm them before planning.
Is it OK to put a glass cabinet next to a window?
Often it is the best place. Just check the sun: Fabuwood’s warranty does not cover colour change from sunlight or UV, and a frame beside a south- or west-facing window gets more of it than the rest of the run. A blind or UV-reducing film handles strong sun.
