A plank with its own colour and its own light: choosing a floating shelf for a Galaxy Pistachio Green kitchen
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Every other part filed with the Galaxy Pistachio Green trim arrives in the green. Most of the floating shelves do not have to. Of the 22 shelves on this page, 21 are lit planks sold in three surfaces — Standard, Timber and Walnut — and the last is bare stainless steel. That makes this the one decorative purchase where you choose a second material to sit on the sage, and it is also, by the store’s own listing, a light fitting. Both of those decide more about how the shelf looks in the room than its length does.
Three surfaces on the same lit plank, and what each costs
The lit shelves run in seven widths from 24 to 60 inches. Standard and Timber are priced identically at every width. Walnut carries a surcharge that wanders between $71.50 and $146.25 rather than scaling with length. These are the live figures:
| Width | Standard | Timber | Walnut | Walnut surcharge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24″ — GPG LED FLS24 | $487.50 | $487.50 | $585.00 | $97.50 |
| 30″ — GPG LED FLS30 | $539.50 | $539.50 | $646.75 | $107.25 |
| 36″ — GPG LED FLS36 | $617.50 | $617.50 | $715.00 | $97.50 |
| 42″ — GPG LED FLS42 | $656.50 | $656.50 | $780.00 | $123.50 |
| 48″ — GPG LED FLS48 | $698.75 | $698.75 | $845.00 | $146.25 |
| 54″ — GPG LED FLS54 | $861.25 | $861.25 | $968.50 | $107.25 |
| 60″ — GPG LED FLS60 | $1,027.00 | $1,027.00 | $1,098.50 | $71.50 |
The word to query before you order is Standard. The titles do not say what it is — a painted plank in the cabinet colour, a neutral wood, or something else — and we would rather tell you that than guess. If you want a shelf that disappears into the run, ask whether Standard is the green; if you want a shelf that shows up against it, Timber or Walnut is the certain route. Timber and Walnut are also the two accent options on the wall-mount hoods in this finish, so a shelf can be matched to a wood hood by name.
Honey or dark brown: which wood tone a grey-sage wants beside it

This green is not a bright one. Sampled off the swatch it averages a greyed sage, and a colour with that much grey in it takes on the temperature of whatever sits next to it. That is what makes the plank choice matter more here than on a white kitchen, where almost any wood simply reads as wood.
A honey-toned wood — which is what Timber is, if the shelf follows Galaxy’s Timber stain — pushes the sage warmer and softer. The pair reads as garden-and-oak, relaxed and rather traditional, and it sits close to the warm-wood pairing our own green guide leans on. Walnut does the opposite job. Its depth sits below the green in value, so the shelf reads as a dark line drawn across the wall and the sage looks lighter and cooler by comparison. That is more graphic, and it suits black or aged-brass hardware better than polished brass.
The honest constraint is the rest of the room. A kitchen can usually carry two woods — the floor and one more — before the third starts to look like an accident. If there is a white oak floor and a butcher-block island top already on the plan, a third tone on the wall is one too many; pick the shelf to match one of them, or let it be the one element in Standard. Oak, walnut and the other species are compared side by side, and how a whole palette gets built around the cabinets is its own guide.
The same code is listed twice: once as a shelf, once as a light bar
Here is something the product grid shows but nobody points out. Every lit shelf code on this page — GPG LED FLS24 through FLS60, in all three surfaces — appears a second time on the cabinet accessories list under a different name: undercabinet LED light bar. Same code, same price. The store is telling you, in its own filing, that this plank lights the counter underneath it.
That changes how to plan one. A shelf over a prep counter is not only a place to stand jars; it is the task light for the surface below, doing the job a puck set under an upper cabinet would do. So hang it where you need light on the worktop, not only where the wall looks empty — over the chopping zone, the coffee station, the stretch of counter between the sink and the range. A shelf hung over a stretch nobody works at is a lamp pointed at nothing.
Three things are not published and are worth a call before the wall is closed: the light output and colour temperature, whether a driver comes with the shelf or the separate GPG LED DRIVER at $204.75 is needed, and whether the GPG LED WLS SWITCH at $221.00 will run it on the same circuit as the rest of the cabinet lighting. Whatever the answers, the power has to arrive at the shelf line before the drywall does, which makes this a decision for the rough-in, not for the week of install.
Forty-eight inches is the cheapest per inch, and one plank beats two
Divide each price by its width and the lit range is not linear. The 24-inch shelf costs $20.31 an inch. The cost per inch then falls steadily to the 48-inch shelf at about $14.56, and rises again: $15.95 at 54, $17.12 at 60. If the wall allows it, 48 inches is where the money works hardest.
It follows that one long plank is cheaper than two short ones covering the same run. Two 24-inch shelves come to $975.00 against $698.75 for a single 48. Two 30s come to $1,079.00 against $1,027.00 for a single 60. The pairs only make sense where there is a reason to break the line — a window between them, a hood between them, or two different heights on purpose.
- Over a 36-inch range of counter between two uppers: the 36-inch shelf, $617.50, fills the gap without overhanging the doors either side.
- On a blank wall at the end of a run: a 48-inch shelf at $698.75, set so its end lines up with the side of the last upper.
- Across a window return or a short wall: 24 or 30 inches, and accept the higher rate per inch because the wall sets the length.
- The full 60 only where the counter under it is at least that long and genuinely used — a 60-inch light bar over a 42-inch stretch lights the edge of the floor.
The 54 and 60 are also where Walnut is proportionally cheapest — its surcharge drops to $71.50 on the 60. If a long dark plank is the look, the long one is the one to buy.
The one shelf that belongs beside a burner
GPG SSFLS36 is the odd part out: a 36-inch stainless steel shelf at $510.25, unlit, one width only. It is $107.25 less than the 36-inch lit plank, and it is the only shelf on this page to put within reach of a cooktop, where heat and airborne grease will reach anything left on it. Steel wipes clean; a wood or painted plank beside a range needs washing rather than wiping.
Against this green, steel reads as equipment rather than as furniture, which is usually right beside a range and usually wrong anywhere else. If the hood is a painted surround, one steel shelf each side is a professional-kitchen look; if the hood is one of the wood-accent models, a matching Timber or Walnut plank further along the wall will sit better than steel. The hood page shows what the range wall will be built around.
Four answers to have before the shelf is ordered
- What Standard means, if you are considering it — the cabinet green, or a neutral.
- The rated load and bracket type. Neither is on our list; if anything heavier than glassware and a few bowls is going up, get the answer in writing, and have blocking put in at the shelf line while the wall is open.
- The power arrangement: driver included or not, switch compatibility, and where the feed comes through the wall.
- The shelf against a run of boxes. Where the cabinets continue across the wall, an open shelf wall cabinet with a finished interior lines up with the run by construction and carries its load on the cabinet rail. The plank earns its place where there is no run to join.
Send the wall through the free 3D design service and a designer replies within one business day, with the shelf line, the light and the power point drawn in within 24 to 48 hours. Trade buyers pricing several kitchens start at Captivating Pro. The rest of the trim list is on the decorative accessories page.
Common questions
- What wood shelf goes best with sage green cabinets?
- A honey-toned wood such as Galaxy’s Timber warms a grey-sage and reads soft and traditional; walnut sits darker than the green and reads as a crisp line that makes the sage look lighter and cooler. Match the shelf to one wood already in the room — floor or counter — rather than adding a third tone.
- Do these floating shelves have lights built in?
- Twenty-one of the twenty-two do. The same GPG LED FLS codes are also listed on the cabinet accessories page as undercabinet LED light bars, so the shelf doubles as the task light for the counter below. Light output, colour temperature and whether a driver is included are not published — ask before the wall is closed.
- What size floating shelf is the best value?
- The 48-inch lit shelf at $698.75 costs about $14.56 an inch, the lowest of the seven widths; the 24-inch is $20.31 an inch. One long shelf is also cheaper than two short ones: two 24s are $975.00, a single 48 is $698.75.
- How much more is the walnut floating shelf?
- Between $71.50 and $146.25 over Standard or Timber, depending on width: $97.50 at 24 inches, $123.50 at 42, $146.25 at 48 and only $71.50 at 60. Standard and Timber cost the same at every width.
- Can I put a floating shelf next to the range?
- Use the stainless one there. GPG SSFLS36 is 36 inches, $510.25, unlit, and wipes clean of the grease that settles near a cooktop. A wood or painted plank beside a burner will need washing, not wiping.
- What does "Standard" mean on the lit shelves?
- The product titles do not say, so we will not guess. If you want the shelf to disappear into the green, ask whether Standard is the cabinet finish before ordering; if you want contrast, Timber or Walnut is the certain choice.
