What the extra six inches of a 30-inch pantry buy
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Most people arrive at a 30-inch pantry from a 24, and the question is always the same: is another half a foot of shelf worth another two hundred dollars. Usually yes — but the reason is not the shelf area, it is that this is the first width where a pantry stops competing with the rest of the kitchen for storage and starts absorbing it.
The case for going wide
A 30" double-door box takes a full-size shelf run in each bay, holds bulk packs side by side rather than stacked, and swallows the small-appliance overflow that otherwise colonises a base cabinet. In a kitchen with no walk-in, one of these does the work of the closet somebody removed.
It is the wrong buy in a room where it has to stand alone in a walkway. At 24" deep with the doors open, this unit commits about three feet of floor in front of it. In a galley, take the 12"-deep version and the loss of capacity, or move the pantry to the end wall.
Height is cheap at 15 inches and expensive at 30
This is the finding people do not expect. The cost of taking a pantry from 84" to 96" is not a fixed trim charge — it scales hard with width, and 30" is where the curve bends.
| Width | At 84" | At 96" | The extra foot costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15" | $871.00 | $955.50 | $84.50 |
| 18" | $1,020.50 | $1,121.25 | $100.75 |
| 24" | $1,241.50 | $1,365.00 | $123.50 |
| 30" | $1,443.00 | $1,781.00 | $338.00 |
| 36" | $1,677.00 | $2,314.00 | $637.00 |
What is on the shelf at this width
Eight double-door pantries, TP301284 to TP302496, in 12" and 24" depths and the four heights. Displayed prices run $1,443.00 to $1,807.00. There is no oven cabinet, no drawer configuration and no half-height unit at 30" — if the plan calls for a built-in oven, that is a 33" cabinet and a different page.
Depth adds $32.50 at 84" and $26.00 at 96", so as with every tall width the depth decision is a room decision and not a money one. Two doors at 15" each keep the swing modest for a box this size.
Two errors worth avoiding
Buying 30" and then filling it with shelves at even spacing. A wide pantry rewards zoning: one bay with close shelves for cans and jars, one bay left tall for cereal, oil and small appliances, and the bottom of both left open for a bin or a crate. Even spacing turns a 30" cabinet into a wall of half-empty shelves.
The other error is symmetry. Designers like to centre a tall unit on a wall. In practice a pantry works better beside the refrigerator, so that unloading groceries is one turn instead of a walk — even if the elevation looks less balanced on paper.
Common questions
- Is a 30 inch pantry cabinet worth it over a 24?
- At 84" tall the step from 24" to 30" costs about $201.50 and buys 25% more shelf. If the wall has the room and the walkway has the clearance, it is the better value per inch. If either is tight, it is not.
- How much does a 30 inch tall pantry cabinet cost?
- Between $1,443.00 and $1,807.00 displayed, depending on depth and height. The height choice moves the number far more here than it does on the narrow widths.
- How deep should a pantry cabinet be?
- Twelve inches if you want everything visible and the cabinet to sit in line with wall units; twenty-four if you want capacity and can accept a back row you will forget. In a walkway, take the shallow one.
- Can a 30 inch pantry replace a closet pantry?
- In everyday use, largely yes — it holds a comparable amount and puts it all within reach of one step. What it will not do is store the ladder, the cooler and the paper towels for the year the way a walk-in does.
- What sizes of tall pantry cabinets are available?
- Fifteen, eighteen, twenty-four, thirty and thirty-six inches wide, in 12" and 24" depths. There is no 21" or 27" pantry, and 33" is reserved for oven cabinets.
