Galaxy Horizon single door pantry cabinets: the longest stained door in the kitchen

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

A narrow pantry tower is, from the room, mostly one thing: a tall front. Nothing else in the kitchen puts so much of a single door at eye level, and on a stained finish that door carries the longest runs of visible grain in the room. A Fabuwood Galaxy Horizon single door pantry comes 15″ or 18″ wide, 12″ or 24″ deep, and 84″, 90″, 93″ or 96″ tall: sixteen units from $871.00 to $1,150.50. This page covers the front first, meaning the grain, the pull and the light, and prices all sixteen at the end.

Grain that runs from knee height to above your head

A wall of white painted shaker pantry cabinets with long brass bar pulls beside a stainless double wall oven, with a glass door to the right
Tall pantry doors in white paint, not this stain, but the geometry is the same: long doors, long vertical pulls, and a glass door right beside the end cabinet.

Every Galaxy door is a five-piece shaker: two vertical stiles and two horizontal rails in solid wood, ¾″ thick and 2½″ wide, framing a recessed centre panel. On a tall pantry door the stiles are the longest pieces of solid wood in the kitchen. Under a paint they are just two straight edges. Under this stain the grain inside them stays visible, so an uninterrupted stile several feet long becomes a strong vertical line of figure, and the veneer-faced centre panel between the stiles shows its own grain pattern.

That has two consequences. The good one is that a narrow tower looks taller and more like furniture than the same box painted, because the eye follows the grain up. The one to plan for is that a long piece of wood shows more natural variation along its length than a short one. Fabuwood says colour variation is normal on its stained finishes, and a door this size gives that variation more room to show. It is part of what a stain is. If a perfectly even tall surface matters more to you than grain, a painted Galaxy finish is the honest choice, at the same price.

A tall door beside short ones from the same order

The pantry rarely stands alone. It usually ends a run of base and wall cabinets whose doors are a fraction of its height, all from the same order and the same stain. Seen together, the tall door will not look exactly like the short ones next to it, and that is not a fault: it is a different size of wood, with a different stretch of grain, catching the light at a different height. Most people read this as the character of a stained kitchen rather than a mismatch.

Two habits keep it that way. Order the tower with the rest of the kitchen, not as an afterthought, so everything comes from the same production window. And look at the full run in daylight before judging any one door, since this grey-taupe reads cooler under an overcast sky and warmer in sun, and a tall door spans more of that light than any other.

The pull: length, height and metal

A short knob on a tall door looks lost and makes the door harder to open, because the hand pulls from one small point on a long leaf. The usual answer is a long bar or appliance pull mounted vertically on the stile opposite the hinges. How long and where it goes are design choices rather than catalog specs, so treat what follows as our advice.

  • Length: something in proportion to the door, often in the range of 12″ to 18″ on an 84″–96″ tower, and longer if the room uses appliance pulls elsewhere. Match the pull length to the fridge handle if the pantry sits next to it; the two will be read together.
  • Height: centre the pull around the height your hand naturally reaches when you stand in front of the tower, roughly where a wall-cabinet pull and a base-cabinet pull would sit if the door were split. Hold a strip of tape on the door before drilling anything.
  • Metal: Fabuwood photographs this finish with gold hardware and with copper accents, and both warm metals bring out the soft pink undertone it describes. Black or stainless reads cooler and suits a kitchen with black counters or a lot of steel. Test the actual pull against a door sample ($35.00) rather than a screen.
  • Hinge side: normally toward the nearest wall or the fridge, so the open door does not block the walkway. Decide it on the plan before the order goes in.

At the end of a run, beside a window or a glass door

Narrow pantries tend to end up at the ends of runs, which is where the window, the back door or the patio slider usually are. That means the tower gets more direct sun than most cabinets in the room, on its front and on its exposed side. Fabuwood’s warranty treats colour change from sunlight and UV as normal rather than a defect, and says colours may darken or lighten over time. For a tall stained piece beside a bright opening, plan for it: a sheer blind or UV film on the glass is cheaper than living with one sun-bleached side.

The exposed side needs a finished surface either way. The tall end skin, GH SK TALL, is $169.00 on the cabinet skin page, with GH SK T12D at $126.75 for the 12″-deep towers, and the tall pantry side panels start at $409.50 for the flat GH SPF TP1821 on the side panel page. On a stain, one detail matters more than on paint: the grain of the side should run vertically, the same way as the door stiles. Our guide to skin panels and gables explains why a horizontal grain on a tall side looks wrong even to people who cannot say why.

Where a tall stained door shows its use

A pantry door is opened more often than almost any other cabinet door, and always at the same spot. Over a few years that concentrates wear in three places. The edge of the stile beside the pull collects hand oils and the odd knock from a ring or a tin. The bottom rail takes the toe of a shoe, the vacuum head and the mop. And the face of the door around the pull picks up faint smudges where fingers miss the handle.

On a paint, those show as dull patches or chips of a different colour. On this stain they tend to show as a slight sheen change or a pale nick on an edge, with the grain still reading through, which is part of why stained kitchens are often described as aging gracefully. Care is simple and follows Fabuwood’s own guidance for its finishes: mild cleaners only, a damp cloth that is wrung out rather than wet, blot rather than rub when something spills, and never spray a cleaner straight onto the wood. Spray the cloth instead. Our care guide has the routine.

Small damage is a touch-up job. The touch-up kit in this finish is $62.40 and holds a stick, a marker and a scraper; Fabuwood does not make spray cans for its stained finishes, so there is no respray option to reach for. Keep the kit in the pantry itself, where the damage will happen, and treat marks while they are small.

All sixteen units, priced

The code reads width, depth and height in that order: GH TP152484 is 15″ wide, 24″ deep and 84″ tall. Displayed prices on the review date:

18″ × 24″$1,053.00$1,108.25$1,101.75$1,150.50

Two quirks are worth knowing. The full 24″ depth costs only $26.00 to $32.50 more than the 12″ box of the same width and height, so choose depth by what it will hold and by what stands beside it, not by price. And on the 18″ towers the 93″ height is a few dollars cheaper than the 90″, while on the 15″ towers the two cost the same, so if your ceiling allows either, the taller box costs nothing extra. How deep shelves behave in a narrow box, and what roll-outs cost, is covered on our roll-out drawer page and in the tall cabinet guide.

When the narrow tower is not the right box

If the gap is 24″ or more, the double door pantry gives a wider opening and a pair of doors. If the tall cabinet is for an appliance, the oven cabinet, double oven and combo oven pages cover the three 33″ towers. The full tall cabinet range is on its own page, everything else is in the collection, and a free 3D design shows the tower at full height against your ceiling before it is ordered.

Common questions

Does a stained pantry door show more grain variation than smaller doors?
It can, simply because it is a longer piece of wood. The stiles on a tall door run most of the cabinet’s height, and Fabuwood notes that colour variation is normal on its stained finishes. Order the tower with the rest of the kitchen and judge the run as a whole in daylight.
What size pull should go on a tall pantry door?
A long bar or appliance pull, mounted vertically on the stile opposite the hinges, often somewhere around 12″ to 18″ on an 84″–96″ tower. Match it to the fridge handle if the two stand together, and tape a mock-up to the door before drilling.
Will sun fade a tall stained cabinet next to a window?
Sunlight changes stained wood over time, and Fabuwood’s warranty does not treat that as a defect. A tower beside a window or glass door gets more sun than most cabinets, so a sheer blind or UV film is worth considering.
Which way should the grain run on a tall side panel?
Vertically, the same as the door stiles. On a stained finish a horizontal grain on the side of a tall cabinet is obvious from across the room.
How do I clean a tall stained cabinet door?
With a mild cleaner on a well-wrung cloth, working with the grain, and a dry cloth after. Blot spills rather than rubbing, and spray any cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the door. The edge beside the pull and the bottom rail need attention most often.
How much is a Galaxy Horizon single door pantry?
From $871.00 for the 15″ × 12″ × 84″ GH TP151284 to $1,150.50 for the 18″ × 24″ × 96″ GH TP182496. The 24″-deep version costs $26.00 to $32.50 more than the 12″, and every unit ships assembled.
