Galaxy Horizon double oven cabinets: re-housing the ovens you already own

Prices quoted in this article were read off the grid on the review date; the live price grid on this page governs.

Double wall ovens are among the most expensive appliances in a kitchen, and they are often in perfectly good working order when the cabinets around them are not. Many remodels keep them. That turns the cabinet order into a fitting problem: a new tower has to accept appliances that already exist, wired where they already are. A Fabuwood Galaxy Horizon double oven cabinet is 33″ wide in four heights, GH OC3384D to GH OC3396D, at $1,599.00 to $1,748.50. This page is written for the kitchen where the ovens stay and everything around them changes.

Keep them, or replace them with the cabinets?

Start with an honest look at the ovens. If they are relatively recent, heat evenly, have door seals in good shape and suit the way you cook, keeping them is sensible: re-housing a working pair costs a fraction of a new pair. If they are old enough that parts are hard to find, or one cavity is already unreliable, replacing them at the same time as the cabinets avoids a second, messier job later, because swapping a double oven out of a finished tower means disturbing the new trim around it.

The model and serial plate, usually visible on the frame when the lower oven door is open, tells you what you have. Write the model number down before anything else; every step below depends on it.

Four things to check before ordering the new tower

Each of these comes from the existing kitchen, not from a catalog, and each can stop a job if it is discovered on install day.

The existing-oven checks, in the order to do them
CheckWhere the answer comes fromWhy it matters
The ovens’ required cutoutThe installation guide for your model number (usually downloadable from the maker)The new tower’s opening has to suit it. We confirm the fit from the model number; we never guess a cutout
Where the power supply comes inLook behind or below the existing ovens, or ask an electricianThe junction box has to land where the new cabinet and the oven’s cable can reach it
The existing tower’s height and the ceiling above itA tape measure, and a look for a soffitSets which of the four new heights will fit, and whether crown or a filler closes the gap
Access into the roomDoorways, corners and stairs between the delivery point and the kitchenA tall assembled tower has to reach the wall, and the ovens have to leave and come back

The first is the one to send us. With the oven model number we can confirm that the ovens suit the 33″ tower before it is ordered, and point out anything the installation guide asks the cabinet to provide. If the ovens are an unusual width or an older model with a non-standard cutout, that is the moment to find out, not when the old tower is already in a skip.

Matching the new height to the old tower and the room

The new tower comes in 84″, 90″, 93″ and 96″. The old one may not match any of them exactly, especially if it was site-built or topped with a soffit. Choose the new height from the room, not from the old box: it should line up with the other tall cabinets and with the tops of the wall cabinets or the crown around it. If the new tower is shorter than the old one, the wall above it will need patching and painting where the old box stood; if it is taller, check it can be tilted upright under the ceiling, since a tall box needs a little more than its own height to stand up. The dimensions checklist lists the ceiling measurements to take.

One more point: changing the tower height does not by itself change where your ovens sit. The oven position is set by the cabinet design, and a taller cabinet usually adds space above the opening. If the old top oven sat at a height you liked, confirm with us where the new opening places it before ordering.

The swap, in order

This is the sequence we recommend. It keeps the ovens safe and the time without an oven short.

  1. Confirm the fit and the height with us, then order the tower with the rest of the kitchen. Galaxy delivers in about two weeks.
  2. Have an electrician switch off the oven circuit at the panel and disconnect the ovens. Hard-wired appliances are not a DIY disconnection.
  3. Remove the ovens with at least two people. A double wall oven is heavy, and most of the weight is at the back; take the doors off first if the installation guide allows, and protect the floor.
  4. Store the ovens upright, somewhere dry, with their doors and trim kits together.
  5. Remove the old tower, make good the wall and floor, and check the junction box position against the new cabinet.
  6. Set, level and fix the new tower, then fit fillers, end skin and crown so the tower is finished before the ovens go back in.
  7. Reinstall and reconnect the ovens (electrician again), then adjust the cabinet doors and drawers around them.

If the old ovens turn out not to fit

Sometimes the model number answers the question the other way. Older double wall ovens, and some made for the European market or for custom cabinetry, need openings a standard tower does not provide. When that happens there are only two honest options: replace the ovens, or build a custom opening on site that meets the old appliance’s installation guide. We will tell you which applies before anything is ordered.

What we advise against is cutting or packing out a factory cabinet to suit an appliance it was not built for. The opening, the fixing points and the clearances the oven maker requires all depend on the cabinet around the oven, and improvising them in a tall box that holds two heavy, hot appliances is the wrong place to save money.

If the ovens are being replaced, buy them before the cabinet, just as for a new kitchen. Wall ovens are sold in several nominal widths, so choose the model, download its installation guide and send us the model number; the tower is confirmed against it. Delivery timing then works in your favour, because Galaxy ships in about two weeks and new appliances can be ordered to arrive in the same window.

New stained cabinets around appliances that are not new

A double oven tower in white paint, not this stain. In a remodel, the ovens are often the one thing in this picture that stays.

Kept appliances look older next to new cabinetry, and a light grey-taupe is kinder to that than a bright white. It sits closer in value to brushed steel, so a used stainless door looks less out of place in it than in a crisp white frame, and Fabuwood itself shows this finish with stainless steel. If the ovens are black or white rather than stainless, bring a photo of them when you look at a door sample ($35.00): the finish reads cooler beside black glass and warmer beside white enamel, and it is worth seeing both before deciding.

The tower’s side needs a finished surface if it ends a run: GH SK TALL at $169.00 on the cabinet skin page. Fillers between the tower and a wall or fridge are on the filler page, from $84.50 for the 3″ × 96″ tall filler. Our guide to end panels and fillers explains where each is needed.

The four double oven towers, priced

HeightSKUPrice
84″GH OC3384D$1,599.00
90″GH OC3390D$1,673.75
93″GH OC3393D$1,677.00
96″GH OC3396D$1,748.50

Each is 33″ wide and ships assembled. If the ovens are being replaced after all, and one oven plus a microwave would do, the combo oven cabinet takes that pair; a single oven goes in the oven cabinet. Pantries that share the wall are on the single door and double door pantry pages. Common questions

Can I keep my double wall oven when replacing the cabinets?
Usually, yes, if the ovens’ required cutout suits the new tower. Send us the model number from the oven’s data plate and we will confirm the fit before you order. Older or unusual ovens are the ones to check carefully.
Where do I find my wall oven’s model number?
On the model and serial plate, usually on the oven frame, visible when the lower door is open. The installation guide for that model gives the cutout and electrical requirements.
Who should remove and reinstall a wall oven?
An electrician should disconnect and reconnect it, because wall ovens are typically hard-wired. Lifting it out takes at least two people; keep the trim kit and fixings with the ovens.
Will a taller cabinet put my ovens higher?
Not necessarily. The oven opening position is set by the cabinet design, and extra cabinet height usually goes above it. Confirm with us where the opening sits before choosing the height.
What if my old wall ovens do not fit the new cabinet?
Then the choice is to replace the ovens or have a custom opening built to the old appliance’s installation guide. We check the fit from the model number before ordering, and we advise against cutting or packing out a factory tower to suit an appliance it was not built for.
How much is a Galaxy Horizon double oven cabinet?
GH OC3384D is $1,599.00, GH OC3390D is $1,673.75, GH OC3393D is $1,677.00 and GH OC3396D is $1,748.50. All are 33″ wide and ship assembled.
