Three inches apart: what twenty-one buys and what twenty-four buys

Nobody arrives at twenty-one inches because they wanted twenty-one inches. They arrive because a wall measured out at an awkward number and the drawing has to close. So the useful thing this page can do is put the two candidates side by side: the box you are looking at, and the box three inches wider that you could probably still fit. The money is close. The choice of cabinets is not.
The same cabinet, one step up the grid

Three dollars and twenty-five cents separates the two full-height-door bases. Nothing on this table costs more than $68.25 to widen. If the wall has the inches, the grid is not the reason to stay narrow.
What the narrower width simply does not have
This is where the step actually matters. Nothing here is a pantry — tall cabinets skip this width entirely and resume at 24. No glass front is cut for it. No corner box of any kind: no diagonal, no pie-cut, no blind, no lazy susan. No open no-door wall unit, no microwave base, no bench seat, no appliance garage, no LED floating shelf. All of those exist one step up.
The upper run tells the same story in a single detail. Every wall box at this width carries one door; every wall box at 24 inches carries two. Twenty-one inches is the last width the factory hangs a single door on, which is why a 21″ upper always swings further into the room than its neighbours and why a pair of them on the same wall rarely looks right.
In a bathroom the narrow width holds up much better
Four vanity boxes live here: a full-height door at $393.25, a drawer-over-door at $429.00, a drawer bank at $718.25 and a sink base at $422.50. That is the complete set of vanity configurations, which is more than some wider widths manage — there is no 30-inch vanity drawer bank at all, for instance.
A 21″ vanity box is 21″ deep and 34″ tall, so at this width the cabinet is as deep as it is wide. Two of them either side of a sink cabinet is the standard small-bathroom answer, and the drawer bank is worth its premium there for the same reason it is in a kitchen: you can see into a drawer.
Six accessories, and the cheapest useful one
