Two shallow pockets beside a trap, and what to do with them

Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets

Twenty-one inches is the narrowest cabinet in this collection built to take a basin, and buyers arrive here expecting a small vanity with a small cupboard in it. What they get is a small vanity with almost no cupboard in it, because the waste and its two stop valves have been given the middle of the box and the shelf has gone to make room for them. The useful question at this width is not which cabinet to buy — there are four and they are easy enough to tell apart — but what can be done about the space the plumbing leaves behind.

The four boxes, and the only one with a hole in it

All four share a carcass: 21 inches wide, 21 deep, 34 tall. Three of them are storage cabinets with a solid floor and a shelf. One has neither, and it is the only one a plumber can work in.

GN VB21-34Drawer over doorNo$429.00
GN VDB21-34Full drawer stackNo$718.25

Note how little separates the first three. Thirty-five dollars seventy-five covers the whole spread across them, and only $29.25 stands between the plain cupboard and the box a plumber can actually work in — which means the price offers no protection at all against ordering the wrong one. Read the code, not the figure.

What is actually left in there

Take 21 inches, remove a stile at each side and you are planning around a clear opening a good deal narrower than the label. Down the middle of that opening runs the waste from the basin, with two stop valves behind it. What survives is two shallow pockets, one either side of the plumbing, each of them tall but blocked at the back and wet at the bottom whenever anything leaks.

That is enough for spare rolls and a bottle of cleaner. It is not enough for towels, a hairdryer, a bin, or anything you want to find quickly in the morning. In a powder room this is fine, because a powder room has nothing to store. In any bathroom that is used for getting ready, plan the real storage somewhere other than under the bowl.

The three parts that recover some of it

This collection sells three things aimed squarely at the space around a trap. None of them is expensive relative to the cabinet, and one of them is the best value fitting in the bath list.

Sink-base fittings in this finish, with what each one recovers
PartDisplayed priceWhat it gets back
GNK TILTOUT 11″$162.50The dead false front above the bowl — brushes, razors, a tube of paste
GNK TILTOUT 14″$162.50The same, on a wider front where the cabinet allows it
GNK UNDER SINK MAT$156.00Nothing, until something leaks — then it saves the cabinet floor

The tilt-out tray is the one to take seriously. The strip of front above a basin is not a drawer and never can be — the bowl is behind it — so it is fitted as a dummy panel on nearly every vanity ever built. A tilt-out hinges that panel forward onto a shallow tray, and it is the only storage you will ever get from the top eight inches of a sink cabinet. A third size, GNK TILTOUT 24″, exists at the same $162.50 for wider fronts. Sizes are matched to the front you actually have, so confirm the published dimension for your cabinet before ordering one.

Three more inches, for sixteen dollars

GN VSB24-34, the next sink base up, displays at $438.75 — $16.25 more than this one. It is the cheapest three inches in the bath range and nearly all of it goes to the basin, which is where regret about a narrow vanity actually shows up. Nobody has ever complained that the cupboard beneath their sink was too small; they complain that they splash the wall every morning.

So take the 24 where the wall allows it and this one where it does not. Note that a box at this size sticks out from the wall as far as it runs along it, so in a room under five feet across the constraint is usually the bathroom door rather than the cabinet — swing it open on the drawing and see whether it clears the counter corner before you settle the width.

The part that fits three of these four boxes

This collection lists roll-out trays by opening width, and at twenty-one inches there are two: GNK ROD-B21 BLUM E at $204.75 for the standard height and GNK ROD-B21 BLUM H at $253.50 for the high-sided version. On a bath carcass they are the cheapest useful thing you can put inside a cabinet, and at 21 inches deep the tray comes almost entirely out of the box when you pull it.

They belong in the door base, not the sink base. GN VB21FD is an unobstructed cupboard with a solid floor, and a pair of trays turns its one deep shelf into two that come to meet you — which in a small bathroom is the difference between storing towels and rummaging for them. In GN VSB21-34 the waste is standing in the middle of exactly the space a tray needs to travel through, so a full-width roll-out will not run.

That is the shape of the whole width, really. The cabinet that takes plumbing takes almost nothing else, and the cabinets that take fittings cannot take a basin. If the bathroom has room for two boxes, buy a sink base and a door base, put the trays in the second one, and you have solved the storage that this width cannot solve on its own.

Common questions

How narrow can a bathroom vanity with a basin be?
Twenty-one inches here, which buys GN VSB21-34 at $422.50. Every narrower bath box in the collection ships with a solid floor and no plumbing preparation at all, so this is the first one that can honestly be called a vanity.
How much can you keep under a bathroom basin?
Less than the cabinet size implies. Once the waste and the valves have taken the centre, what is left is a tall pocket on either flank — fine for spare rolls and a bottle of cleaner, and not a home for anything you need in a hurry.
What is a sink tilt-out tray?
A hinge kit that turns the dummy panel above a basin into a shallow forward-tipping tray. In this finish they display at $162.50 in 11-inch, 14-inch and 24-inch versions, and they are the only way to get storage out of the top of a sink cabinet.
Can I use a 21 inch storage cabinet as a vanity?
Not without cutting a cabinet that was never built to be cut. GN VB21FD and GN VB21-34 have an intact floor and a shelf where the trap needs to go; only GN VSB21-34 ships prepared for plumbing, and it costs $29.25 more than the cheapest of them.
Is a 24 inch vanity worth it over a 21?
For $16.25 more, almost always. The three inches go to the basin rather than the cupboard, and bowl size is what people notice every day at a narrow vanity.
