Twenty-one inches: the hole in the middle of the glass ladder

Twenty-one inches is the last width on the wall with a single door, and one of only three between fifteen and thirty-six that offers one front and one front only. It is the sparsest of those three by a distance: the other two at least carry a corner or a deep appliance box, and this one carries nothing but the cabinet. The widths either side of it can be glazed or left open. This one cannot, and that is worth knowing before an elevation is signed off rather than after.
What the neighbouring widths have that this one does not
Set the standard thirty-inch height across five widths and the gap is obvious on sight.

There is no corner unit at twenty-one inches either, no blind, no refrigerator-depth box, no bottle lattice and no tray cabinet. Six doored boxes are the entire width, and the single-door wall page is where all six live.
The six boxes, and where the height steps are cheap
They run GN W2115 at $227.50, W2118 at $250.25, W2130 at $295.75, W2136 at $351.00, W2139 at $373.75 and W2142 at $416.00 on the review date. Two of those steps are worth noticing. Fifteen to eighteen inches of height costs $22.75. Eighteen to thirty costs $45.50 — twelve extra inches of cabinet for only twice what the three-inch step before it charged.
Above thirty the curve turns. Thirty-six to thirty-nine is $22.75, and thirty-nine to forty-two is $42.25, so the top of the ladder charges more per inch than the bottom of it does. Where the run is going to the ceiling regardless, that is simply the price of the plan. Where it is a genuine choice, thirty-six inches is where the value sits.
When the wall gives you twenty-one and the plan wants glass
Three ways out, in the order we would try them.
- Move the run three inches. A twenty-four-inch box takes GNK GDW2430 at $165.75 and costs $68.25 more than this width at the same height. If those three inches can come out of a filler at the end of the run, this is the cheapest fix on the list.
- Split the width. An eighteen and a twelve side by side give you an eighteen-inch position that can be glazed, and come to $500.50 at the standard height against $295.75 for the single box — dearer, with a stile down the middle, but the glass lands where you wanted it.
- Leave it solid and put the glass somewhere better. A glazed bay wants to be seen: at the end of a run, flanking a window, on the side facing the dining space. If the twenty-one-inch position is none of those, it never needed glass in the first place.
The same three apply if what you wanted was an open bay rather than a glazed one. What does not work is waiting to decide — every one of these options moves other cabinets, so it is a drawing-stage question. Where this width is genuinely the right cabinet
Above a twenty-one-inch base, which is a common width beside a dishwasher, so the stiles line up down the elevation. Hard against a tall cabinet, where a wider box would crowd it. And anywhere the wall arithmetic simply lands here — this is a real width with a full height ladder, not a compromise, and it is only a trap when a plan expects it to do something it was never built to do.
