Twenty-one inches: why retrofitting roll-outs costs more than buying drawers
Reviewed September 2026 · Captivating Cabinets
Twenty-one is where two of the most common questions in a cabinet order collide. Three of the six boxes made at this width are priced within thirteen dollars of one another, so the price list gives you no help choosing between them. And it is the last narrow width, which makes it the right place to settle whether you buy drawers from the factory or add roll-out shelves to a door box later.
Three cabinets, thirteen dollars apart, and nothing else in common
GN SB21 is $386.75, GN B21FD-12D is $390.00 and GN B21FD is $399.75. A spreadsheet sorted by price puts them in a row and implies a choice. There is no choice: they do unrelated jobs.
- GN SB21, $386.75 — a sink base. No shelf, no drawer, doors that clear the trap. It is the narrowest sink box made and it is for a prep or bar bowl, not the kitchen sink; a standard double needs 33 or 36 inches.
- GN B21FD-12D, $390.00 — a full-height door on a twelve-inch-deep box. Depth, not width, is what you are buying; it goes on the back of a peninsula or along a walkway.
- GN B21FD, $399.75 — a full-height door at full depth. Twenty-one inches of uninterrupted height for trays, boards and tall flat things.
The other three are GN B21 at $432.25, the standard drawer-over-door box and the default for this width; GN DB21 at $672.75, three dovetailed drawers; and GN DB21-4 at $832.00, the same box split four ways.
Roll-outs later, or drawers now
This is the question people ask on every narrow width and it has a clean answer at twenty-one. A roll-out drawer is a tray on runners that sits behind a door; a drawer bank is a set of fronts with no door in front of them. Price them both.
| Route | Parts | Displayed total |
|---|---|---|
| Door box plus two roll-outs | GN B21 $432.25 · GNK ROD-B21 BLUM E $204.75 × 2 | $841.75 |
| Door box plus two high-sided roll-outs | GN B21 $432.25 · GNK ROD-B21 BLUM H $253.50 × 2 | $939.25 |
| Full-height door box plus two roll-outs | GN B21FD $399.75 · GNK ROD-B21 BLUM E $204.75 × 2 | $809.25 |
| Factory drawer bank | GN DB21 | $672.75 |
The drawer bank is $136.50 to $266.50 cheaper than every retrofit, and it is also the better object: three fronts you grab directly instead of a door you open first, dovetailed solid-wood boxes rather than trays, and a face that lines up with the drawer line running along the rest of the kitchen. Roll-outs are the right answer for a cabinet you already own. For a cabinet you are about to order, they are the expensive way to get something worse.
Where twenty-one lands on a real wall
Most often beside the dishwasher. A sink base takes 33 or 36 inches, the appliance takes 24, and twenty-one is frequently the remainder on the short side of the run. GN B21 at $432.25 is the box we draw there by default, because the top drawer holds the tea towels and the cutlery that a sink run needs within a step.
The other place is a drinks or coffee station: GN SB21 with a small bowl, a drawer bank beside it, and four feet of wall doing a job the main kitchen no longer has to. If that is the plan, the sink’s own published minimum cabinet width settles the box, not the bowl dimension — and if the two numbers are within an inch of each other, step up to a 24.
Common questions
- Is it cheaper to add roll-out shelves or buy a drawer base?
- Buy the drawer base. GN DB21 is $672.75; the same cabinet as a door box with two roll-outs added is $841.75, and with high-sided roll-outs $939.25. Roll-outs are for cabinets you already own.
- How much is a 21-inch roll-out drawer?
- GNK ROD-B21 BLUM E, the standard height, displays at $204.75. The high-sided version, GNK ROD-B21 BLUM H, is $253.50.
- What size sink fits a 21-inch sink base?
- A prep or bar bowl. It is the narrowest sink base made, at $386.75, and it will not take the sink most kitchens install. Work from the sink maker’s minimum cabinet width, and if it is close, go wider.
- Why are three of the 21-inch cabinets almost the same price?
- Coincidence rather than similarity. A sink base, a shallow door box and a full-depth door box all land between $386.75 and $399.75, and they do three unrelated jobs. Choose on function; the price column will not help.
- How much does a 21-inch base cabinet cost?
- From $386.75 for the sink base to $832.00 for the four-drawer bank. The standard drawer-over-door box is $432.25 and the three-drawer bank is $672.75.
